Volume 6 Chapter 166
by Golden DragonVolume 6 + Chapter 166: The Gargantuan Calamity Beast
The blue dragon flew toward the Beast Tide beyond the Maginot Fortress, opening her maw as thunderous draconic breath gathered within.
Standing atop Atiya in her true dragon form, Xia Yi summoned her Rose Staff into her hand.
To amplify her magic, she chanted draconic incantations and began releasing spells, an icy blue radiance enveloping her.
Atiya flew over the Beast Tide and suddenly braked hard.
“Graaah!!”
The beasts below snarled ferociously at the blue dragon in the sky, their crimson eyes burning with nothing but the urge to extinguish life.
Several winged Calamity Beasts took flight, lunging at the blue dragon from multiple directions, their blade-sharp claws poised to tear her apart.
At the critical moment, just as Atiya’s charged breath was about to be interrupted, Xia Yi completed her incantation.
“Frostbite Exhalation!”
With Xia Yi at its center, frigid ice-aspected mana burst outward like a detonation, sweeping over the Calamity Beasts. Whether airborne attackers or ground-bound roars, all were eroded by the frost.
Freezing mist enveloped the monsters, invading their bodies and freezing them solid.
“To restrain so many Calamity Beasts at once, how much mana must that require?”
Wallace, watching from the wall, couldn’t help but marvel.
“Xia Yi’s mana reserves are simply staggering, far beyond any grand mage.”
Atiya’s draconic breath reached full charge, and she unleashed it skyward in a searing blast that shot into the clouds.
Lightning and thunder roiled through the cloud layer; surging arcs of electricity transformed into an unstoppable storm of bolts that rained down upon the earth, detonating across the field.
The frozen Calamity Beasts, unable to move, became sitting targets as the lightning annihilated great swaths of them in blinding flashes.
The combined technique of Xia Yi and Atiya left the Maginot Fortress army on the walls utterly awestruck.
“Incredible…” Daisy watched in rapt attention, a smile spreading across her face. “With Xia Yi and Atiya here, there’s no doubt we can hold off this Beast Tide.”
Having eliminated the vanguard of the tide, Xia Yi and Atiya did not relent. They continued their coordination, Xia Yi wielding masterful control magic while Atiya unleashed wide-area draconic breath, striking the tide relentlessly and driving deep into their ranks.
Their efficiency dwarfed that of armed helicopters by an immeasurable margin.
Every soldier gave Xia Yi and Atiya their highest recognition. All doubts surrounding Xia Yi’s promotion were dispelled by this display of prowess.
No one would question them any longer.
“So strong, absolutely incredible! Watching them gets my blood boiling!!” Wallace’s fighting spirit surged; he gripped his weapon tightly, eager to throw himself into the fray and slaughter beasts.
“My great hammer is starving for action!!”
“Alright, all troops, commence battle! Frontline assault units, charge! Flanking units, protect the central forces! Central forces advance steadily! Long-range bombardment units provide fire support from the rear! Healing units, stand by to render aid at any moment!”
Seeing the situation favorable and morale high, Daisy made her call. With nearly 99.99% odds of victory, she decisively ordered a full offensive.
“For the Maginot Fortress!!”
The fortress gates opened, and soldiers poured out to engage the Beast Tide.
“Monster, take this hammer!!”
Wallace charged in the vanguard, unleashing Blood Magic, Berserk. He burned his own lifeblood to transform into a crimson berserker, clashing head-on with the Calamity Beasts. His war hammer swung relentlessly, smashing into the monsters’ bodies with devastating force.
Other elite soldiers followed suit, pulling out all the stops and engaging the beasts in fierce combat.
Behind them, mage units continuously rained long-range spells, disrupting the beasts’ assault rhythm and dividing the battlefield.
Thus, the Maginot Fortress army gradually gained ground and secured the advantage.
“Atiya, are you alright?” Xia Yi asked the blue dragon.
Atiya’s flight speed had slowed noticeably.
Releasing draconic breath consumes a dragon’s stamina considerably. Moreover, dragon breath is not infinite, it has a limited reserve that replenishes over time. The stronger the dragon, the greater the reserve, but once expended to a certain extent, fatigue sets in.
To effectively strike the Beast Tide, Atiya had been breathing nonstop since the start, barely pausing.
“Ugh… Your Highness… I’m nearly spent…” Atiya’s voice sounded weak.
“Then let’s return to the Maginot Fortress and rest,” Xia Yi said. “You’ve worked hard enough, Atiya. The fortress army has already gained the upper hand, that’s sufficient.”
“Understood.”
Atiya turned back toward the Maginot Fortress.
On the way, a few flying Calamity Beasts tried to block her, but Xia Yi restrained them with magic.
“Brothers, kill them all! Drive these monsters back to where they came from, we have a huge advantage!”
“Victory in this battle is surely ours!”
“The Maginot Fortress, invincible!!!”
On the battlefield, the soldiers were bloodthirsty, their battle cries thundering across the plain.
Just as everyone believed the scales of victory were tipping in the fortress’s favor, an unforeseen catastrophe struck.
Boom, Boom, Boom,
The earth trembled, like a great drum beating out a rhythm, the very pulse of some colossal leviathan.
The blue dragon returning to base halted and turned around.
Xia Yi’s body went rigid as she felt death’s approach closing in.
At the horizon’s edge, a gargantuan Calamity Beast appeared, its entire body shrouded in ominous black fur, crowned with a pair of massive antlers like those of a great stag. It led an innumerable horde of beasts toward the Maginot Fortress.
“ROOOOAR!!!”
On the beast’s horns, terrifying fluctuations gathered, distorting space itself as calamitous miasma was compressed to its limit and unleashed.
The miasma formed a pitch-black, colossal beam that obliterated everything in its path, both Calamity Beasts and stunned soldiers alike, all reduced to nothingness.
A hideous furrow was carved across the land, and the calamitous blast slammed into the Maginot Fortress.
In less than a second of resistance, the fortress’s magical barrier was shattered, its impregnable wall pierced by a gaping hole nearly a hundred meters across. The buildings behind were vaporized instantly; in the blink of an eye, casualties were innumerable.
At that moment, everyone grasped a brutal truth… true disaster had only just begun.
