Volume 6 Chapter 103
by Golden DragonVolume 6 + Chapter 103: The More She Thought About It, The Sadder She Became
“Who’s there?!”
Xia Yi spun around and looked toward the source of the sound, her heart instantly tensing up.
She had dispelled the armor possession state here in this alley. If anyone had seen her, then her identity would unquestionably be exposed.
No matter what, she had to prevent that from happening.
“Whoever’s there, this is your last chance. Come out!”
Xia Yi issued a final warning, staring fixedly at the dumpster as she slowly approached it step by step.
She grabbed the lid and abruptly flipped the dumpster over.
“Squeak squeak squeak!”
The “residents” inside the dumpster were startled and immediately scattered, darting into the darkness of the night and disappearing into the depths of the alley.
“Oh… so it was just some rats. Looks like I was overthinking things.” Xia Yi let out a sigh of relief.
The noise had merely been caused by the rats inside the dumpster. She had genuinely thought someone was hiding in there.
Tonight’s desperate escape had left her nerves stretched far too tight, even the sounds of rats had triggered her reflexive alarm.
“I need to get back and rest as soon as possible… I’m exhausted.” Xia Yi sighed softly.
…
“Heave-ho.”
Xia Yi lifted the window from outside and quietly slipped back into the room.
It was already the latter half of the night, and Qiu had long since fallen asleep.
After changing into her pajamas, she sat on the bed and began sorting through her thoughts.
“So much happened tonight…”
Because the situation earlier had been too urgent, Xia Yi hadn’t had time to think carefully. But now that she calmed down, she realized there had been many suspicious points in Kennedy’s words.
Aside from mentioning the Envoys, the Queen, and the anomaly, Kennedy had never once referred to the Elven Kingdom or anything related to the modern era.
It was as though this elven general had completely assimilated into the Mythic Age and forgotten who he used to be.
If this were truly the Kennedy from modern times, that would be impossible. Somehow, it felt similar to Balan, still the same person, yet certain parts of him seemed to have been severed away.
That, too, was a deeply puzzling clue.
So far, Xia Yi had only observed this strange phenomenon among the elves.
“I really can’t make sense of it…”
However, no matter how much circumstances changed, Xia Yi’s original goal would never change.
No matter what era she was in, she had to obtain the World Tree’s Water of Life and save Xia Lulu.
“I’ve already obtained some critical information… For example, the Queen is the ruler of this world.”
“I need to find a way to meet the Queen and speak with her.”
“Perhaps once I meet her, all this fog and confusion will finally clear away. Maybe I can even negotiate with her regarding the Water of Life.”
As the silver-haired little dragon girl pondered these countless questions, her eyelids finally gave out. Once they closed, they never opened again, and she drifted into sleep upon the bed.
…
…
“Haaah~”
Xia Yi felt like she was on the verge of dropping dead.
She had only slept four hours last night before coming in to work.
Since when had she become such a diligent employee?
Still, there was no helping it. By the time she got back last night, it had already been deep into the night, leaving nowhere near her usual amount of sleep before work began.
Only a few days ago, she had confidently declared that she would become a proper maid and do her job well.
Now it seemed maintaining this job at all was becoming difficult…
“Xia Yi, no dozing off during work hours,” Qiu reminded loudly.
“Wuh!”
Hearing Qiu’s voice, Xia Yi immediately activated her signature skill.
“I’m not dozing off. I was just… thinking. Thinking about how to provide better service for customers.”
“Is… that so?” Qiu looked highly suspicious.
“Yes.”
“Alright then, Xia Yi. I’ll believe you this once.”
Qiu placed several freshly delivered morning newspapers in front of Xia Yi.
“Xia Yi, did you see? Something huge happened last night.”
“Mm? Something huge? I vaguely remember hearing some noise while I was sleeping.” Xia Yi immediately began playing dumb.
“Yes. Last night, the City Lord personally led the Security Patrol in a full-scale hunt for Justice Bringer.” Qiu explained, “Quite a few people witnessed it. Justice Bringer fought against everyone alone and even accomplished the unbelievable feat of destroying a helicopter barehanded.”
“The most vicious and evil… criminal?”
Looking at the newspaper’s description of Justice Bringer, Xia Yi was utterly speechless.
She flipped through several more newspapers, only to find them all largely the same, condemning Justice Bringer’s actions as criminal and immoral, claiming he had violated the bottom line of civilized society, and insisting that Justice Bringer must be punished to protect the beautiful Free Nation.
Good grief. In order to deal with Justice Bringer, Kennedy had even begun controlling the newspapers, smearing him through public opinion and fabricating baseless scandals about him.
For example, claiming Justice Bringer was a severely mentally ill madman…
That was complete nonsense, alright?!
How did she look mentally unstable?!
“Xia Yi, Justice Bringer is actually pretty handsome, though, wearing that golden armor,” Qiu said while pointing at the wanted poster in the newspaper. “Justice Bringer is incredibly strong too. He escaped the Security Patrol’s siege and even shot down a helicopter. He’s practically become a brand-new legendary figure in the Free Nation.”
“Mm-hm, yes yes yes, exactly, exactly like that!”
The moment Xia Yi heard Qiu say that, her heart blossomed with delight, and she nodded repeatedly.
“Xia Yi, why are you so happy? You’re acting like you’re Justice Bringer himself,” Qiu teased. “You’ve actually been pretty suspicious lately. These past two days you’ve kept sneaking out at night and only coming back late, and that just happens to coincide with the hours when Justice Bringer is active.”
“I’m… a fan!”
Xia Yi hurriedly came up with an excuse.
“How could I possibly be Justice Bringer? I’m just a weak little maid with no strength at all.”
“That’s true. The genders don’t even match anyway. After all, Xia Yi is a girl, not a man.”
“Ugh…!”
Even though she had successfully bluffed her way past the topic, Xia Yi suddenly felt as though someone had stabbed her straight through the heart. All her happiness instantly vanished.
Only then did she realize she seemingly had no way to transform back and could only use the Human King Armor as a disguise…
Damn it. The more she thought about it, the sadder she became.
“Why’d you suddenly get all depressed again? I really don’t get you.” Qiu laughed softly.
…
In the blink of an eye, afternoon had arrived, and there was still some time left before work ended.
Just hold on a little longer. Endure a bit more. Once work’s over, she could go back to her room and collapse onto the bed.
Xia Yi repeatedly encouraged herself internally, using pure willpower to motivate herself onward.
However, what she hadn’t expected was that despite there still being quite a few customers, Qiu actually decided to close the shop early.
“Sister Qiu, are we short on ingredients today?” Xia Yi asked curiously. “This is the first time I’ve ever seen us get off work early.”
“No, that’s not it. There’s just something going on today, so I wanted to close early.” Qiu replied.
“What is it?”
“Xia Yi, I told you about it before. Did you forget already?”
