Volume 6 Chapter 168
by Golden DragonVolume 6 + Chapter 168: The Death Envoy
Xia Yi looked at the black-robed elder before her. Though she had only seen him once, she recognized him immediately, the Death Envoy, one of the three great Envoys.
The situation was growing perilous.
The strength of all three Envoys was not to be underestimated.
“If I’m not mistaken, you are…” Xia Yi began, but she feigned hesitation, silently counted three seconds in her mind, then slammed her palm against the ground and launched herself skyward toward the Maginot Fortress at full speed.
“Don’t think you can escape!”
The Death Envoy raised his scythe and slashed a rift in the air. From within poured countless vengeful spirits, surging toward the blue dragon in an attempt to forcibly drag her down.
BOOM!
Xia Yi employed Chantless Incantation and unleashed a flame spell, whipping up a scorching wind that scattered all the spirits. The wraiths were consumed and incinerated in the blaze.
“A mage, are you?” the Death Envoy said with an indifferent tone. “No matter. A side dish has slipped away, irrelevant. Before long, her life too shall be reaped by my hand.”
“Death Envoy, was it you who lured the gargantuan Calamity Beast here?”
“Indeed. I made a little use of the elite reconnaissance squad to rouse it from its slumber.”
“Not a single person in the Maginot Fortress was infected by calamity, so why do you secretly drive disaster to this place?”
“Isn’t it obvious?” The Death Envoy spread his arms wide. “In the Queen’s presence, the three Envoys are forbidden from internal strife. Even if I hold grievances against the Dragon Envoy, I cannot openly interfere with her domain. But once calamity breaks out, I can no longer stand idly by, that is a matter of principle.”
“You…!”
Xia Yi now understood what the Death Envoy intended.
By awakening the gargantuan Calamity Beast and bringing disaster upon the Maginot Fortress, he could use that as a legitimate pretext to act against the Dragon Envoy’s territory.
“I will slaughter every last soul in the Maginot Fortress. Then I can openly take over the Dragon Envoy’s domain… One Envoy is enough, I alone suffice! No others are needed!”
The Death Envoy’s smile grew ever more twisted.
“If I reap all lives that could possibly be infected by calamity ahead of time, then no one will ever become infected!”
“You are utterly insane, even more contemptible than the Human Envoy!”
Xia Yi raised her Rose Staff, ready to enter a combat stance.
At that moment, she heard the voice of her inner demon whisper in her ear.
“Xia Yi, let me handle this.”
“Inner demon?”
The inner demon Xia Yi said, “Give me your body. I’m going to cut this fool down.”
“But…”
“Give it to me, or I’ll throw a tantrum!” The inner demon suddenly turned ferocious.
“Fine, fine!”
Helpless, Xia Yi yielded control of her body to her inner demon and retreated into the spiritual world to rest.
“What’s this, your gaze has suddenly changed?”
The Death Envoy sensed something amiss. Having frequent dealings with death, he was acutely sensitive to matters of the soul.
“It’s as if you’ve swapped souls entirely.”
“Don’t overthink it. I’m here to take your life, old fossil.”
The inner demon Xia Yi raised her hand. The sacred sword’s brand emerged on the back of her hand, radiating a golden light.
At the sight of that radiance, the Death Envoy was visibly shaken. He stepped back.
“A Holy Sword?!”
“That’s right. Prepare to die!”
The inner demon Xia Yi summoned the Holy Sword Gram, gripping it firmly, and shot forward like a cannonball.
She clutched the sword with both hands, channeled draconic power into it, and swung fiercely at the Death Envoy.
The Holy Sword possessed a special advantage against dark creatures, especially against undead-type enemies like the Death Envoy, the affinity was overwhelmingly in her favor.
“Wraith Screech!”
The Death Envoy instantly summoned countless spirits to swirl around him, emitting a ghastly, piercing shriek.
The wraith’s cry carried a paralyzing effect, capable of freezing enemies in place.
The spectral sound waves seemed to pierce through the inner demon Xia Yi’s skull, exploding within her brain and striking deep into her very soul.
For a moment, she nearly lost consciousness and faltered in her charge.
But suddenly, she widened her eyes, resisting with sheer, iron will, and raised the Holy Sword high.
“Perish in the blade’s light!”
“Soul-Reaping Slash!”
The Death Envoy swung his scythe, carving a black rift through the air that clashed with the golden sword-light from Gram.
CLANG!
After the collision, the Death Envoy’s scythe shattered. The sword energy raced along his body, shredding his black robes and sending him flying like a tattered rag doll, crashing heavily to the ground.
“Talkative vermin, wasting my time.”
The inner demon Xia Yi’s head still felt a bit dizzy, the Wraith Screech had left its mark, and she hadn’t fully recovered yet.
Still, that didn’t stop her from hurling a taunt at the Death Envoy.
The victor was clear.
She had initially thought he would be a troublesome opponent, which was why she had stepped in to spare Xia Yi from getting roughed up too badly.
But who would have guessed he was this fragile, not even as tough as the Human Envoy.
Perhaps the Holy Sword’s affinity was just too overwhelmingly strong…
HISSS,
Just as the inner demon Xia Yi was about to dismiss the Holy Sword, a long neigh rang out, followed by the pounding of iron hooves against the earth.
She turned and saw, in the distance, a horse wreathed in ghostly green flames galloping across the plain, heading straight for the Death Envoy’s fallen body.
“Heh… hehehehe… HAHAHAHA! Excellent, excellent! You have actually managed to kill me once, you have earned the right to see my true form!”
“Mock Death Divine Authority, Netherworld Return.”
