Volume 6 Chapter 70
by Golden DragonVolume 6 + Chapter 70: The Crazy Bear Brothers
Thud, thud, thud…
The earth began to shake violently, as if some colossal creature was moving.
The horses in the convoy let out frightened whinnies. Some of them broke free from their reins and fled into the thick fog, disappearing from sight.
“My horses! My horses are gone!!!”
The dwarf merchant was heartbroken.
All those horses belonged to him. Losing them was a pure loss.
“What are you all standing around for? I hired you, are you all useless? Quickly control my horses! Don’t let them all run away!!”
Under the dwarf merchant’s orders, the bear-men of the mercenary group hurriedly tried to bring the panicked horses under control.
“What about the horses I lost?” the dwarf merchant asked Bear One.
“Well… nothing can be done. Those horses have all run into the thick fog.”
“I can see that. Can’t you go look for them?”
“No, it’s too dangerous. Going into the fog beyond our sight would make it very hard to return.”
“It’s all that elf’s fault! I’m so furious! I knew it, why would any elf be willing to help us at a time like this? That bastard must have wanted to harm us, leading us here!!”
The dwarf merchant was so angry that his beard and mustache bristled.
“Take cover from the earthquake first!”
Bear One gathered all his mercenary group members and led the convoy to a relatively stable and open area.
“Is this an earthquake?”
“It doesn’t feel like one. Since when do earthquakes have rhythm?”
“I’ve experienced several earthquakes. They’re really not like this, this is like someone beating a drum!!”
The Bear Dominates the World mercenary group discussed noisily, but none of them reached a conclusion.
Bear One couldn’t figure it out.
What was going on with this Elven Kingdom?
Ever since they approached the Elven Kingdom, all sorts of strange things had been happening nonstop.
He even began to regret taking on this mission.
Although the mission offered many points and the employer’s reward was generous, something felt different from his past experiences.
This time, his spirit was severely depleted, his will worn down continuously, and he himself was becoming neurotic, as if he might lose his mind at any moment.
“Can you hear it?” Bear One clutched his head.
“Big brother, hear what?” Bear Two asked.
“There seems to be a voice in the wind. Someone has been speaking in the wind, drifting over to us…”
Bear One felt as if someone was whispering in his ear, but whenever he tried to discern the words, they became indistinct and blurry.
It seemed distant, yet it followed him everywhere.
Could this be the voice of the “wind” that Balan had spoken of?
“You hear it? You hear it too, don’t you?!”
Balan, tied up like a trussed insect, squirmed his body.
“Because you insisted on having your way, the ‘wind’ is angry. It will punish the trespassers!”
“Shut your mouth! You’re the one who led us in here!!”
Bear One finally couldn’t take it anymore. His spirit shattered. He stepped forward and punched Balan in the face, even knocking out a tooth.
That wasn’t the end. He swung his fists down upon the bard.
“I’ll kill you! I’ll kill you!! It’s all your fault, you led us here!”
“Big brother, big brother, calm down! If you kill him, we’ll have no guide!!”
Bear Two rushed forward, trying to stop Bear One.
“Get out of my way! Don’t touch me!”
Bear One spun around and punched his own brother. That blow carried serious force, drawing blood from Bear Two.
The mercenary group members were dumbfounded.
The captain and vice-captain were blood brothers, deeply devoted to each other. From the very beginning, they had advanced side by side, faced life and death together, and built the mercenary group.
Although they had argued before due to differences in opinion, this kind of bloody violence was unprecedented.
“Big brother, you…!”
Bear Two’s face was filled with disbelief.
“What… What’s wrong with me?”
Bear One looked at his own hand, equally confused.
He didn’t understand why he had attacked his own brother.
But he felt that something had changed within him…
Amidst his shock, he heard the voice in the wind again.
Someone was speaking to him. This time, he clearly heard the words.
“No, you can’t take that away from me…”
“Big brother, what are you saying?”
“Don’t think I don’t know, you’ve been coveting my position for a long time, wanting to take over the mercenary group, haven’t you!!”
Bear One, as if possessed, his eyes bloodshot, lunged at Bear Two.
“The mercenary group is mine! No one is going to take it from me!!”
“Big brother, wake up! I’ve never had such thoughts!”
The two powerful bear-men grappled with each other.
During the fight, Bear Two also seemed to become infected.
At first, he only defended himself, but gradually, madness crept into his eyes, and he began to attack offensively.
Their fight turned from a brawl into a deadly struggle. They struck with extreme cruelty, treating each other as enemies to be killed. Flesh and blood flew.
“I hear it. I hear it too, the voice of the ‘wind’!”
Bear Two bit into Bear One’s body and tore off a piece of flesh.
“The captain’s position, if you can sit in it, why can’t I? Why should I always be under you? I’ve put in more work than you! The mercenary group should be mine! I won’t submit to you!!”
The mercenary group members were at a loss.
“The captain and vice-captain… are they just arguing?”
“They’ve never fought like this before, have they?”
“Someone stop them, quick!”
The other bear-men had no choice but to try to pull the two apart.
But once Bear One and Bear Two had gone mad, they possessed immense strength that could not be restrained. Anyone who tried to stop them was also attacked.
The earthquake continued unabated, and the scene descended into greater chaos.
“Milady, is this normal bear-man culture?” Atiya, watching the spectacle, asked. “When bear brothers fight, do they try to kill each other?”
“No, I don’t think so. It seems they’ve… gone mad.”
“Why would they suddenly go mad for no reason?” Atiya looked puzzled.
“…I’m not sure either.”
Xia Yi felt something was wrong.
First it was Balan who went mad, then Bear One, then Bear Two…
Why did this situation feel so familiar?
It was as if their minds had been polluted, unable to bear it any longer, and they had lost their reason.
“What are you doing? What are you all doing?! Don’t you want your payment anymore? Stop it, all of you!”
The dwarf merchant lost his temper and tried to stop Bear One and Bear Two.
But the two bear-men simply could not hear anyone else’s words.
Helpless, he decided to seek help from Xia Yi and Atiya, hoping the dragons would stop the fight.
Just as he was about to speak, a massive shadow loomed from above, covering both people and carriages alike.
The dwarf merchant instinctively turned around. He looked up. The sight that met his eyes stopped his heart, and an uncontrollable shriek of terror burst from his throat.
“Aaaaaah! This is…”
