Volume 6 Chapter 52
by Golden DragonVolume 6 + Chapter 52: The Favor of The Goddess of Fate
Kennedy watched the scene before him, falling into silence.
This was the perfect opportunity.
The Elf King, weakened to the extreme, and the elven princess, a mere ornamental vase… with no one else present…
A thought as bold as lightning flashed into his mind.
“Cough, cough… I-I’m about to…”
The Elf King lay on the ground, barely able to open his eyes.
Eve sat on the floor like a puppet.
Kennedy, who had been kneeling on one knee in apology, slowly rose to his feet.
He walked step by step toward the Elf King and Eve.
Each step he took was heavy, carrying considerable weight, while his expression darkened like ink.
Eve heard the approaching footsteps. She turned her head and, seeing the elven general’s terrifying expression, asked, “Kennedy, what are you trying to do?”
“…”
Kennedy did not answer Eve’s question.
In his eyes, strangling this ornamental princess to death would be effortless.
“Kennedy, in the name of the elven royal family, I order you to stop!” Eve commanded.
Kennedy completely disregarded Eve. He raised his large hand and reached toward her.
Just then…
Thud, thud, thud!
Footsteps sounded from outside the palace.
“Your Majesty the Elf King, as you instructed, I have come to see you… Ah! Why are you lying on the ground?”
An elven minister asked curiously. As his gaze shifted and landed on Kennedy, he froze.
Kennedy had not expected a minister to show up at this moment either.
His brain raced. He instantly assessed the situation. Without lowering his hand, he took a step forward.
“Your Majesty the Elf King! What is wrong with you?!”
Kennedy’s face twisted into an expression of panic. He hurried past Eve, rushed to the Elf King, and lifted him into his arms.
At the same time, he shouted anxiously to the dumbstruck minister.
“What are you standing there for? Call the royal physician immediately! Something has happened to the Elf King’s health!!”
“Oh! Oh!”
The elven minister snapped out of it, turned, and ran off to summon the elven royal physician.
Eve stared fixedly at Kennedy.
In this situation, Kennedy could no longer do anything, otherwise, the blame would certainly fall on him.
“Your Majesty the Elf King, I will go and call the royal physician for you. Please do not worry,” Kennedy reassured the Elf King. “You will be fine.”
“Thank you, Kennedy…”
The Elf King replied in a faint voice.
Though he could not see clearly and his consciousness had grown hazy, he still turned toward Eve and questioned her in an almost reproachful tone.
“You wretch… why did you just stand there watching? Do you really want to see me dead?”
“No, Grandfather! I never had such a thought!” Eve quickly shook her head. “Kennedy looked like he was about to commit violence.”
“Princess Eve, you may question my ability, but please do not insult my character! I have followed His Majesty the Elf King for many years, dedicating everything to the prosperity of the elven race. His Majesty has witnessed my loyalty!” Kennedy refuted Eve’s words with righteous indignation.
“Do you really think I am… old and blind?”
The Elf King raised his hand. Even though he could barely hold on, he still pointed tremblingly at Eve.
“When did I ever raise you to be someone who cannot tell right from wrong, who twists the truth? The one who called for the royal physician to save me was Kennedy, not you!”
“Grandfather, I am not lying to you.”
“Shut up, you wretch! Are you trying to kill me?!”
The Elf King let out a hoarse scream, then spat out a large mouthful of blood.
Eve was obedient. She did not continue speaking.
“Your Majesty the Elf King, we are here!!”
The elven minister entered the palace with the royal physician and guards.
The elven royal physician quickly checked the Elf King’s condition and turned pale with shock. “Quickly! His Majesty’s condition is very dire. He must receive intensive treatment. Let us hurry and transfer His Majesty to the Spirit Spring to stabilize his state first!!”
“Right!”
Under the protection of the guards, the royal physician took the Elf King to the Spirit Spring within the elven royal palace.
“General Kennedy, it is a good thing you were present to look after him. Otherwise, something truly terrible would have happened to His Majesty!”
The elven minister who had called for help addressed Kennedy.
“His Majesty suddenly collapsing just now truly gave me a fright. I was terrified that if something happened to His Majesty, what would become of our elven race?”
Kennedy’s face was full of worry, he appeared deeply concerned for the future of the elves.
“Yes, indeed. Although His Majesty’s health has already deteriorated greatly due to his advanced age, if he were to fail at this moment…”
As the elven minister spoke, he glanced at the bewildered Eve.
The Elf King’s only direct blood relative now was the future heir to the elven race.
However, it was nearly the consensus among all elves that such an unreliable, ornamental princess could never assume the throne of the Elf King.
“I hope His Majesty recovers as soon as possible,” the elven minister said, withdrawing his gaze and sighing.
…
…
“Hmph, that old geezer is really lucky.”
Kennedy left the elven royal palace and returned to his own quarters.
He took off his clothes, leaned back on the sofa, and contemplated the day’s events.
He had indeed been too impulsive back then, nearly committing a shocking, monumental act.
Had even the slightest thing gone wrong, it would have been difficult to recover.
Still, perhaps because he had suffered so much misfortune before, his luck was due to turn. The Goddess of Fate had sided with him, helping him avert a crisis.
“It looks like that old geezer won’t last much longer. When the time comes, the throne will still pass to Eve… No.”
Kennedy knew that he had already faced many impeachments.
Over the years as a general, he had offended quite a few people. While he was still in power, those people could do little to him.
But if he stepped down from the position of general, he would surely be purged. He knew his fate would be absolutely miserable.
Thump.
Just then, the door opened, and someone walked in.
Kennedy was already irritated, and this was like walking straight into the line of fire. He was about to explode when he heard a soft, sweet voice.
“Darling~”
A shapely blonde elven beauty pressed herself against Kennedy, even taking the initiative to sit on his lap.
This was Kennedy’s mistress, Judith. Within elven society, she was also a ruthless player, always operating in the shadowy industries. After latching onto the big tree that was Kennedy, she gained protection and her business grew by leaps and bounds.
At the same time, she provided support for Kennedy’s career. The two maintained a secret relationship, as both lovers and partners.
“…”
Kennedy looked at Judith, as if an idea had occurred to him.
“What’s wrong, darling? Are you tired today? Not interested?” Judith asked curiously.
“Judith, I want to ask you a question…”
“What question?”
“As I recall, your previous business ventures extended into the Dark Elf Kingdom, isn’t that right?”
