Volume 5 Chapter 29
by Need_More_SleepVolume 5 + Chapter 29: Save Me!
“The fox clan, in order to show their gratitude to the Fox God, holds the Fox God Festival every year. During the festival, the Fox God’s priestesses perform ceremonial dances…”
In the Dragon Library, Xia Yi was leafing through a book, feeling a bit skeptical about the content.
The book was titled The Travels of Marco Pero, written by a dragon named Marco Pero in ancient times, who documented his journeys across the lands and the countries he visited.
But the authenticity of the contents was questionable at best.
Especially the descriptions of the human world. Marco Pero painted it as a land overflowing with gold and jewels, a fantastical realm of endless wealth.
Other dragons might be impressed by such accounts, believing the human world was truly rich beyond measure.
But for Xia Yi, who had extensive knowledge of human history, it was utter nonsense.
Therefore, she suspected that Marco Pero’s depictions of the fox clan might also be heavily exaggerated and could not be taken at face value.
“Creak!”
The librarian of the Dragon Library, a little bone dragon named Creak, ran up to Xia Yi with a book clenched in its mouth and gently placed it in front of her.
“Your Highness, here is the book you requested!”
“Thank you, Creak.”
Xia Yi smiled and nodded.
By now, a small pile of books had gathered around her.
“Your Highness, may I ask what you’re looking for in these books?” Creak asked curiously.
“I want to research the history of the fox clan,” Xia Yi replied. “I want to understand their current situation.”
After all, she was about to represent the Dragon Kingdom and personally visit Fox Hill. Naturally, she wanted to be prepared.
However…
The books contained very little information about the fox clan.
At most, there was this Travels of Marco Pero, but it seemed highly unreliable.
“Your Highness, are you… going to the fox clan’s country?” Creak asked, his curiosity piqued.
“Something like that.”
Xia Yi thought for a moment. Since it wasn’t exactly a secret, she decided to speak honestly.
“I plan to represent the dragons and visit the fox clan to discuss diplomatic matters.”
“Your Highness, that’s incredible!” Creak leaped up excitedly. “Over the past six months, you’ve represented the Dragon Kingdom and achieved countless feats. You have truly become an outstanding heir!”
“Now that you mention it…”
Xia Yi realized he was right. She had indeed accomplished a lot for the dragons recently.
But wait!
Wasn’t she supposed to be the Sword Saint?
Her goal had been to surpass Xia Lulu, to conquer failure and reach new heights in swordsmanship, but why was she constantly working for the Dragon Kingdom instead?
Now she was even thinking about how to conduct diplomatic missions to Fox Hill to benefit the dragons.
Where have things gone wrong…?
The little princess furrowed her brows.
“Your Highness, since I’ve already found the books for you, I won’t disturb you any longer,” Creak said, bowing politely before scurrying off.
Xia Yi was troubled by Creak’s innocent remark for a long while, but after some thought, she decided not to dwell on it. She would finish this task first, then worry about anything else later.
“The priestesses of the fox clan hold an extremely special position. They can hear the voice of the Fox God and represent humans in prayers, asking the Fox God to bless the fox clan with prosperity and longevity…”
The silver-haired girl suddenly realized something.
“Ah! That’s right! Fox Carrot is a priestess, isn’t she?”
In Xia Yi’s memory, the little fox often wore the priestess outfit, which wasn’t just a cosplay hobby.
If it were just self-expression, the little fox would have muttered a few stylish lines here and there, but Xia Yi had never heard anything about priestess duties.
So it was very likely that the little fox was indeed a priestess of the Fox God.
“This is interesting. So Fox Carrot might actually dance at the Fox God Festival?” Xia Yi laughed. “I really can’t imagine that Chuunibyou little fox taking dancing seriously.”
If the account in Travels of Marco Pero was even partially true, Xia Yi was genuinely curious to see what the little fox would look like dancing in a priestess outfit.
…
…
“Sigh, still haven’t found much useful information~”
Xia Yi sighed as she left the Dragon Library.
She had gone through all the books related to the fox clan, but most only discussed historical events involving the foxes. There was little internal information, and hardly anything useful.
No wonder Karami had been struggling to choose someone to go to Fox Hill. Compared to others, Xia Yi had already met the little fox multiple times and even seen the Nine-Tailed Fox Emperor herself, truly the ideal candidate.
“Your Highness! There you are! I’ve been looking for you for so long.”
At that moment, Karami appeared before Xia Yi.
“Is there something you need, Karami?” Xia Yi asked.
“Your Highness, here is the list of personnel heading to the Dragon Kingdom. Please review it.” Karami handed over a document.
“Oh, let me see.”
Xia Yi took it and glanced over the names.
“No issues.”
“If you have no objections, then it’s settled. What do you think?” Karami asked.
“Alright, then it’s decided, ”
Xia Yi was about to agree when she suddenly thought of someone.
She had nearly forgotten this person recently.
“Karami, have you seen the apprentice maid, Elly, from the Royal Maid Squad recently? I haven’t seen her in a while.”
“Miss Elly? She’s currently in prison.”
“Prison?!”
“Yes, she allegedly committed a serious crime and has been imprisoned, awaiting execution in the autumn.”
“Ah?”
Xia Yi froze.
That didn’t make sense. She hadn’t betrayed Elly this time. Why was this apprentice maid, who hadn’t even been formally promoted yet, suddenly at risk of losing her head?
Could it be some trick of the heart demon?
This was not good.
She lowered her head, staring at the list of personnel heading to Fox Hill, lost in thought.
…
…
“I’m innocent! Innocent!! I’m being wronged!!”
In the Dragon Kingdom’s prison, the green dragon apprentice maid, who had almost been promoted, clutched the bars and shouted her innocence at the top of her lungs until her throat grew hoarse.
Elly had been imprisoned for quite some time, accused of helping the princess sneak into the Dragon Treasury without the Queen’s permission, a clear and serious crime under Dragon Law.
She didn’t understand why she ended up like this. That night’s mission had succeeded, and after it, she and Xia Yi had simply gone back to rest. By logic, everything should have ended smoothly, and she should have even received a promotion.
But the next morning, instead of being formally promoted to the Royal Maid Squad, she was dragged away and thrown into the Dragon Kingdom’s prison.
Now, not only had her promotion opportunity disappeared, her head was at risk too.
The unfortunate Elly spent each day in prison crying out her innocence, all to no avail.
Thump, thump, thump.
Suddenly, in the dark cell, Elly heard footsteps.
A few figures appeared, walking up to the prison and opening the door.
“Quack! No!! Don’t take me to be executed! I’m so young! I don’t want to die!!”
Terrified, Elly trembled, her face pale, and she collapsed on the ground, shouting in despair.
“Your Highness! Save me!!”
