Volume 5 Chapter 109
by Need_More_SleepVolume 5 + Chapter 109: An Unusual Strategy
In the dead of night, flames spread across the entire city.
The clash of soldiers echoed through every corner of the streets.
The followers of the White Night Sect had drunk the holy water, plunging into a frenzied state. They charged at the Restoration Army, ignoring their wounds, like mindless beasts devoid of reason, utterly unafraid of death.
“The Fox Emperor has issued his command, we must hold this city at all costs!”
“This place must never fall into the rebels’ hands!”
“No one is allowed to retreat! Any deserter will be executed on the spot! Drink the holy water, and we shall become invincible!”
The foxfolk army fought desperately, making a last stand.
They gathered together, preparing to launch a surprise assault on Yue Liu, hoping to assassinate the commander and create a chance to turn the tide.
However, just as they were about to act, a massive shadow descended from the sky.
Everyone looked up, and in the glow of the flames, they saw a gigantic dragon soaring through the night.
The green dragon descended from above, its enormous body crushing the buildings along the street, causing the ground to tremble violently.
It blocked their path, its gaze locked firmly onto the soldiers before it.
Merely meeting the dragon’s vertical pupils filled them with overwhelming pressure, nearly stealing their breath away.
“Isn’t there a barrier cast by the White Night Sect in the sky?!” the squad captain shouted in disbelief.
“You mean that flimsy thing, like paper? Elly just bumped into it a few times and it shattered.”
A slightly childish, yet sweet voice rang out.
Only then did they notice that standing atop the green dragon’s back was a white-haired dragon girl.
“The Silver Dragon Princess!?”
“Congratulations, you got it right~”
A smile appeared on Xia Yi’s face.
“In that case, I’ll reward you… with a shockwave. Elly!”
“At your command, Your Highness!”
Elly opened her massive jaws and let out a deafening roar.
The thunderous dragon’s roar transformed into a devastating sonic wave, lifting debris into the air and sweeping away everything in its path, engulfing the foxfolk soldiers.
They lost consciousness instantly, hurled into the air before crashing down across the ground.
The overwhelming difference in power meant they were defeated in an instant.
Had Elly not held back, they might have been killed outright by the roar.
“Sigh… Your Highness, this is so boring.”
Elly let out a complaint.
“We’ve fought so many battles, and they’re all just cannon fodder. Not a single challenging opponent.”
“It is rather dull.”
Xia Yi agreed.
Since the Restoration Army began its northern campaign from the south, some time had already passed.
They had secured victory after victory, large and small, unstoppable, advancing like a force of nature.
With the Dragon Clan’s involvement, their advantage was overwhelming.
Before each siege, dragons could take to the skies and unleash waves of dragon breath upon the city, obliterating defensive lines, after which the Restoration Army would simply sweep through.
No elaborate tactics were even required, this alone left the White Night Sect with no effective countermeasures.
As a result, every battle became a one-sided massacre, victories so easy they had grown tedious.
Even Elly, who had been fighting on the frontlines throughout, had lost count of how many battles she had participated in.
“Your Highness, should we call Mr. Karami over and bombarding them again?” Elly suggested. “If we keep blasting them, we could end this war even faster.”
“No need. Leave the rest to Yue Liu and her side,” Xia Yi replied. “This is a restoration campaign, not a campaign of annihilation. If we keep bombing like that, won’t we end up destroying the Fox Hills entirely?”
“That’s true… Sigh, still boring. Not a single worthy opponent.”
Elly lay down on the ground in frustration.
“Your Highness, what are those White Night Sect people even thinking? They can’t win, yet they keep fighting head-on!”
“Exactly… I don’t understand them either…”
Xia Yi felt something was off.
Although the Restoration Army had been victorious in every engagement, ending the war quickly was not so simple.
Because the Fox Clan royal family, no, more precisely, the White Night Sect Leader who controlled them, had issued a bizarre strategy.
Even when outmatched, they insisted on gathering foxfolk troops and White Night followers to defend cities, forcibly slowing the Restoration Army’s advance.
Just as those foxfolk soldiers had said earlier, fully aware they could not win, yet still ordered to stand and fight, even being forced to drink the holy water to continue battling.
Under normal circumstances, they should have taken advantage of the northern terrain, engaging in a war of attrition, advancing when the enemy retreated, retreating when the enemy advanced, dragging things out until winter and exhausting the Restoration Army’s resources.
That would have been the most troublesome scenario for the Restoration Army.
Yet the White Night Sect Leader did not choose that path. Instead, every time the Restoration Army advanced, he simply gathered forces to make a rigid stand.
It was truly incomprehensible.
“O my destined rival, in this moonless night filled with war, why do you seem so lost? Have you fallen into endless mist, unable to find your way toward the light?”
Xia Yi heard a familiar voice.
She turned her head and saw Yue Liu standing atop the ruins, balancing on her toes.
The Chuunibyou pink-haired fox girl struck a dramatic pose, uttering cryptic and incomprehensible lines.
“Oh, it’s Fox Radish.”
Xia Yi had noticed that Yue Liu’s condition had been improving lately, along with a steady increase in her Chuunibyou episodes.
“Don’t call me by such a ridiculous nickname! I am not ‘Fox Radish,’ I am, ”
The little fox covered her face and struck another pose.
“The future Fox Emperor, Yue Liu!”
“Fox Radish, is the battlefield almost cleared?”
As usual, Xia Yi completely ignored her theatrics. Responding to them would only trigger even more incomprehensible lines.
“Almost, almost,” Yue Liu replied. “Only a few of those cannon fodder who drank the White Night Sect’s holy water are left.”
“Why not use the Fox God’s Eyes?”
“I have to limit its usage, it can’t be used too frequently. It puts quite a strain on my eyes. The Fox God warned me that overuse could even cause blindness…”
“I see.”
“By the way, my destined rival, I have an idea!”
“What kind of idea?”
“Since the White Night Sect Leader keeps concentrating large forces to block our advance, why don’t we exploit that? We can feign an offensive push while secretly dispersing our forces. That way, we can capture weakly defended cities simultaneously, gradually devour the northern territory, and ultimately encircle the capital!” Yue Liu proposed.
Xia Yi thought about it. It was indeed a good strategy, one that could significantly increase their chances of victory, even leaving the White Night Sect Leader with no room for a comeback.
However…
She did not agree immediately.
“Fox Radish, do you ever trust your instincts?” Xia Yi asked.
“Instincts?” Yue Liu looked puzzled.
“It might be risky, but I think… perhaps we should instead concentrate our forces even more, break through the White Night Sect’s defenses as quickly as possible, and strike directly at the capital.”
