Chapter 90: My Rich Fathers-in-Law
by WuWangChapter 90: My Rich Fathers-in-Law
Seeing Kate still staring blankly at him, Louis smiled. He touched the golden statue of the Moon Goddess Angel on the front of the vintage car and spoke towards the car, “Worry not, it’s fine now, Miss Kate. I think perhaps it just threw a little temper tantrum—Sir Jim was driving too slowly. The Moon Goddess couldn’t wait any longer for us to deal with that demon.”
Kate was stunned: ‘Was it really the Moon Goddess’s will? No, no, I get it, it’s Lord Louis deliberately comforting me. It seems we really did encounter something strange and troublesome.’
The driver swallowed hard and silently repented a few more sentences.
Helen: [Such a big liar! It’s a shame he isn’t a Priest!]
Soon, everyone got back in the car.
Priest Louis’s blessing seemed to really work. When the vintage car was started again by Jim, it had no more problems.
Of course, it might also have been because the driver Jim carefully followed Priest Louis’s advice—this time, the car was indeed not driven slowly. It easily reached fifty or sixty.
The road conditions were fairly good. After a little over an hour, a bustling small town appeared in the distance. However, the vehicle did not drive into it, but directly turned at a fork in the road.
After passing through fields and then a beautiful green forest, the road became even more level. In the distance, a garden appeared, followed by a small lake. Here, gardeners and servants from the manor could already be seen.
There were also many more carriages on the road. They seemed to be servants from inside and outside the estate castle going out to shop or run errands. They all waved greetings when they saw the car.
A little while later, a hedge wall appeared ahead. At this hedge wall, there was a large gate. Beside the gate, there was a guard booth and armed guards patrolling and standing watch.
Seeing the vehicle from afar, the guards quickly opened the gate.
After passing through the gate, it was the inner area of the manor. There were gardens, flower beds, and even a small artificial lake. The lawns were very neat. Occasionally, a huge redwood or a leafy oak tree could be seen. Some people were walking groups of expensive hunting dogs for their master, and Knights were leading fine horses, teaching the master’s retainers or children from related families martial arts or horseback riding.
And right at the center in the far distance, a magnificent castle stood there.
It was square in shape. The outer facade had a typical Gothic style with high spires. Each floor of the castle had high ceilings. Huge rows of windows lined the walls, and occasionally people could be seen moving inside them.
In an area diagonally behind the castle, there were many buildings separated by a hedge wall. Those were probably the stables, warehouses, and other areas, with some being the residences of the manor’s servants.
There was also a small fountain in the small square in front of the castle. When the vintage car went around the fountain and stopped at the entrance, Louis saw several other tractor-like vintage cars and carriages parked not far from the castle door.
This was the home of Kate, the little rich lady.
No wonder so many reporters were interested in her. After all, this young widow was her father’s chief heir—and she was also so young and beautiful. The people who wanted to marry her probably had to queue from the manor all the way to the town.
After getting out of the car, Louis looked at the castle before him and secretly felt some amazement. Judging by the exquisite sculptures on the castle’s outer walls, to say 40,000 Gold Galleons could have built this… haha.
Louis couldn’t help but glance at the ‘small’ church not far from this big castle, which was formed by three connected buildings—with over a dozen Knights chatting idly on its walls.
Currently, the ‘castle’ in the Magic Circus Secret Realm was built to the scale of this ‘small’ church. It covered over two thousand square meters, with over a dozen bathrooms alone inside. There was also a large wine storage room—with the craftsmen’s decorations, it was actually quite impressive. It couldn’t be run without at least twenty or thirty servants.
If a wall was built around it, there could even be a small training field specifically for Knights inside.
Placed in the Middle Ages, this would be a place only a wealthy Baron could afford to live in—but if Earl Crowley were in the Middle Ages, he would have dozens of vassal Barons and retainers like that.
Placing such a ‘small castle’ in front of this big castle here was like putting a public restroom next to the Parliament Building.
Louis looked up and saw many armed guards on the battlements and towers at the top of the castle. A Knight wearing a red uniform saw the guest looking up and gave a friendly salute with a hand over his chest.
This huge castle before him, plus all the other buildings in the entire manor… if the residents of the surrounding few towns encountered some disaster, squeezing together, it could serve as a shelter and house everyone.
It really was big and impressive.
“Louis, Louis.” Helen grabbed Louis’s sleeve and whispered, “Where does Miss Kate’s Fire Dragon live? I want to go see it later… Why don’t I see the connected buildings of the castle?”
Connected buildings? Aren’t all these in front the castle’s connected buildings?
Louis suddenly understood what Helen meant—she couldn’t see the full view of the castle and mistakenly thought there was another large building area behind it.
Louis blinked hard, opened his mouth wide, and looked at the ‘true little rich lady’ beside him.
That’s going too far! You little rich girl!
Ahem, I mean, going too far, my dear little sister-in-law!
“The efficiency and cost of Wizards building things can’t be the same as ordinary people’s, right?” Louis said softly with a smile.
But… cough… is Duke Oren really this rich?
[Clearly, the castle of the K family, where Duke Oren, the ruler of the ‘Elirinda Wizard Principality’ resides, was huge. After all, they needed to keep Fire Dragons to guard the ‘home’ (the principality). And they didn’t just have them roaming ‘outside’ the castle (within the country); the castle had Fire Dragon ‘bedrooms’ inside as well.]
…
After leading Louis and Helen into the castle, Kate glanced at the time on the main hall clock: nine in the morning.
She didn’t know if her father had returned. The various Divine Officials and Archmages were still waiting.
The butler came over. Seeing Helen and Louis, his expression stiffened slightly, but he didn’t show it.
“Has Father returned?”
“Miss. Not yet, but he just called. He said he finished talking with His Majesty and is on his way back now,” the butler replied.
Kate’s heart couldn’t help but tighten.
Her father was supposed to be on sick leave these days due to injury/illness. But suddenly yesterday, someone from the Royal Court came and summoned him. This left all the distinguished guests waiting here with no one to accompany them.
Originally, she should have been here to accompany the distinguished guests. But yesterday, her father had already told Louis and the others on the phone to have his daughter fetch them. After all, they were introduced by the Barriff Family. If the master said he would send someone to fetch them, it wouldn’t do to just send a driver.
If they felt slighted and left, how could they chat with the Barriff Family people later? It would be so undignified.
“How are things now?” Kate asked nervously.
Originally, according to the plan, her father had not intended to invite these two young Priests—or perhaps he forgot. Otherwise, they should have arrived earlier, and the distinguished guests should have arrived later.
After all, having these two young Priests in their twenties wait a bit wasn’t a big deal.
But now the situation was reversed, and it nearly slighted those distinguished guests.
“Miss, after breakfast, as you instructed, Sir Barnard took the several Mage lords and Divine Official lords to visit the ‘Mermaid’ inside the castle. They just returned.”
“Did the lords say anything?” Kate cautiously asked.
“The lords were very interested—Mermaids, such legendary creatures, it was the first time the lords had seen them! I even specially took photos for everyone. They were quite happy. Right now, they are in the Semi-Study next to ‘that’ hall, having tea and chatting.”
Saying this, the butler delightedly pulled out the newly developed photograph.
Kate secretly sighed in relief—thank goodness the lords weren’t offended.
A somewhat unharmonious quiet discussion drifted over.
“Mermaids? Louis, aren’t they everywhere?” Helen remembered the groups of very beautiful ladies who liked to eat people at White Stone Lakeside. White Stone Lakeside led deep into the sea, and the Mermaids would come over every winter.
“Ahem, this is the countryside. Such things are rare here.”
Kate and the butler looked over with wooden expressions—Have you seen Mermaids? And calling this the countryside! This was specially caught by Father from the sea!
Helen took the chance to lean over and look at the photo, then looked at Louis with a strange expression: “Louis, what is this? It’s so ugly.”
“A dugong. Usually, those who haven’t seen one think it’s a Mermaid. Hmm, but this Fish Tank looks quite big. Not easy to maintain.”
The butler suddenly beamed and put the photo away—They really haven’t seen a Mermaid.
Country bumpkins, not worth paying them any mind.
Kate rubbed her forehead. The two young lord and lady were indeed Priests, but they seemed not to have seen much of the world. They absolutely must not speak out of turn later and slight the lords.
“Let’s go, Mister Louis, Miss Helen.”
Kate said no more. She gave Louis and Helen a slight smile and, along with the butler, led the way ahead. After passing through several corridors, everyone arrived at a location deep inside the castle.
Here there was a spacious Semi-Study—a Semi-Study was usually where the master received guests or discussed matters. It contained various books, curios, and artworks.
But this Semi-Study was covered with various Incantation Texts, divine patterns, and Magic Circles.
Seven very special guests were currently in the Semi-Study, some drinking tea, some talking loudly. The servants in the Semi-Study were very careful. When Kate arrived here, she also became very careful.
And indeed, she should be careful. After all, Lord John was a Bishop of the Lunar Court, and those three Mages were teachers to the King and Queen Delphinia.
They were the kind of people even the King and Queen had to treat with serious respect.
