At dinner time, Father Lu returned. He was holding a gift he had prepared, which he waved playfully.
“Xing Xing, Xiao Chuan, I brought you gifts.” Lu Xiangbei took off his coat, handed it to the butler, and walked over to the two little ones with the gifts.
Xu Xinghe looked curious, while Lu Hanchuan acted as if he hadn’t seen Lu Xiangbei at all. He just kept staring at Xu Xinghe.
“Uncle Lu, can Xing Xing open it?” Xu Xinghe excitedly took the gift box and asked politely.
Lu Xiangbei nodded. “Of course. Let’s see if Xing Xing likes it.”
Lu Xiangbei picked up the other gift box and handed it to Lu Hanchuan. “Xiao Chuan, open yours too and see if you like it.”
Lu Hanchuan looked at the box but didn’t take it immediately. He didn’t need a gift. Then he turned his head and saw Xing Xing looking curiously at the gift box in his hand.
Lu Hanchuan reached out and took it. Sure enough, Xing Xing leaned in curiously. “What’s inside Brother Ah Chuan’s box?”
Lu Hanchuan slowly unwrapped the packaging, revealing a game controller inside. It was the latest model and priced at 120,000 yuan. Lu Hanchuan had seen it on TV.
Lu Hanchuan’s expression didn’t change. He didn’t particularly like it. He set down the game controller indifferently.
Compared to a game controller, he preferred holding Xing Xing’s hand. He found that more fun and interesting than any game.
Xu Xinghe also opened her own gift box. Inside was a white princess dress, which was very delicate and not overly flashy. It was suitable for everyday wear.
“So beautiful! I like it so much. Thank you, Uncle Lu.” Xu Xinghe hugged the dress and thanked Lu Xiangbei happily.
Lu Xiangbei was experiencing the joy of having a daughter for the first time. Wasn’t she much more obedient and interesting than that wooden son of his?
Lu Hanchuan glanced at Xing Xing hugging her gift. He hesitated and then picked up the gift he had tossed behind him. He walked over to Xing Xing.
“Thank you.”
The voice was so faint it was almost inaudible, but Lu Xiangbei heard it loud and clear!
Lu Xiangbei’s eyes widened. Was he hallucinating? Did he hear his autistic son speak?
And his son even thanked him?
Lu Xiangbei looked at his wife in disbelief. She was smiling so hard that her face was red. She nodded at him.
Lu Xiangbei gave a small cough. He couldn’t lose composure in front of the children. He had to maintain his dignity as a father.
“You’re welcome.” His tone that was lifting slightly at the end couldn’t hide his happiness.
The four of them took their seats at the dining table. Lu Xiangbei remembered the topic he and his wife had discussed last night. He cleared his throat and spoke.
“Xing Xing, you’ll be starting school in a few days.”
Hearing this, Xu Xinghe’s hand, which was holding her soup spoon, paused. She glanced at Lu Hanchuan beside her and saw his hand gripping his spoon tightly.
Then with a “Thud,” Lu Hanchuan dropped his spoon into his bowl, pushed back his chair, grabbed Xu Xinghe’s hand, and ran upstairs.
Lu Xiangbei and Wen Yining exchanged a look. They were really worried that Lu Hanchuan was becoming too dependent on Xu Xinghe. That would be too unfair to Xu Xinghe. They wouldn’t back down.
Lu Hanchuan pulled Xu Xinghe into his room, closed and locked the door, then opened his closet and lifted her inside.
The closet was very large but pitch black inside. Xu Xinghe was still a bit dazed. How did they suddenly end up hiding in the closet?
She followed the small hand she was holding up and wrapped her arms around his entire arm. “Brother Ah Chuan? What’s wrong with you?”
Lu Hanchuan couldn’t hear anything. All he knew was that they were trying to take Xing Xing away from him. He had to hide her.
The outside world was dangerous. Xing Xing would get hurt, just like the dolls. He had to protect her.
