The Gloomy Yandere Top Student’s Little Deskmate (6)

Song Yu returned to the run-down old neighborhood. Inside, the TV was playing his grandmother’s favorite Peking opera. He changed out of his shoes at the door.

“Grandma, don’t watch TV all the time. It’s bad for your eyes.” Song Yu set down his bag and reminded her.

Grandma Liu was sitting on the single sofa, completely absorbed in the show. She nodded absently at Song Yu’s words.

“I know, I know—” She responded and continued watching.

Song Yu sighed helplessly and went into the kitchen to start preparing lunch.

It was just him and Grandma Liu at home, so he didn’t need to make much. In twenty minutes, he had two dishes and a soup ready.

While cooking, his mind kept drifting uncontrollably to Xu Xinghe’s face. In one moment of distraction, he slightly burned an egg.

“Grandma, time to eat.” Song Yu called out to the living room as he carried the dishes to the table.

The two of them sat at the cramped little wooden table. Grandma Liu looked at the burnt egg with surprise. This had never happened before.

Song Yu picked up the slightly burnt egg and put it in his own bowl, then placed a perfectly fried one in his grandmother’s bowl before digging into his meal.

“Xiao Yu seems to be in a pretty good mood today?” Grandma Liu observed him. Even though his expression remained as blank as ever, she could tell that he was feeling happy.

Song Yu’s hand, holding his chopsticks, paused for a moment. A hint of unease crossed his face.

“Eat quickly, Grandma.” He deflected the question and went back to wolfing down his rice.

Knowing how hard Song Yu’s life had been, Grandma Liu kept piling food into his bowl. “Eat more, you’re too skinny. Girls won’t like you if you’re this thin.”

Hearing her words, Song Yu couldn’t help but think of Xu Xinghe again. By the end of the meal, he had eaten two large bowls of rice, much more than usual.

After finishing, Song Yu washed the dishes and wiped the stove clean.

He picked up his cloth bag to head back to school. Before leaving, he called out: “Grandma, I’m going to school now.”

Grandma Liu watched her now-grown grandson and nodded. Song Yu was only seven years old when she picked him up, and time passed in a flash.

Song Yu walked very fast. The scorching sun caused beads of sweat to appear on his forehead.

He had never wanted to get to school so badly before.

By the time he arrived, the bell hadn’t rang yet. He was much earlier than usual.

The seat beside him was still empty. Song Yu felt a hint of disappointment.

But just as he sat down, Xu Xinghe walked in through the door. Seeing that he was already there, she smiled at him.

The weather was hot, and her cheeks were flushed with a delicate pink, smooth as jade, so soft-looking that one could almost squeeze water from them.

    “Song Yu! You’re here early.”

Hearing her voice made him a little nervous. He licked his dry lips and responded, “Mm.” Then worried that he might seem too cold, he added, “Why are you here so early?”

After putting away her backpack, Xu Xinghe turned to him. A mischievous smile appeared on her face when she heard his question. “Because—I wanted to see my deskmate early!”

Song Yu’s entire body visibly turned red at her words. He sat there frozen, looking flustered and easy to tease.

Her voice was sweet and soft, with a drawn-out tone that was utterly captivating. The words she said left him not knowing where to put his hands or feet.

He wanted to tell Xu Xinghe that he wanted to see her early too…

“Haha… just kidding, Song Yu. Don’t be nervous.” Seeing him so flustered and overwhelmed, Xu Xinghe decided to break the tension.

She was a little worried that being too forward might scare the rabbit-like Song Yu.

Hearing her words, the joy in Song Yu’s heart vanished in an instant. So… she was just joking?
