“Thank you, but I’m fine.”
Hearing Xu Xinghe’s reply, Song Yu’s dark expression froze for a moment. She had refused.
Song Yu secretly glanced at Xu Xinghe beside him, only to find that she happened to be looking at him too. Their eyes met in mid-air.
Song Yu’s heart began to beat wildly. He lowered his head to avoid those dazzling eyes. He could even see his own gloomy reflection in them.
So disgusting, like a rat lurking in the shadows. He didn’t deserve her…
Wu Fan didn’t seem upset by the rejection. He kept smiling, as if he didn’t mind at all. Only Song Yu could see the disappointment in his eyes.
On the other side, Shen Yao had taken over the seat next to Ye Chenfeng. Looking at his handsome and refined features, she thought he was really good-looking.
“Chenfeng, I don’t get this problem. Could you teach me?” Shen Yao put on a sweet and coquettish voice, holding out her test paper with a shy look.
Ye Chenfeng glanced at the question Shen Yao pointed to, then at the way she looked at him. He instantly understood that Shen Yao was interested in him.
“Sure.” Ye Chenfeng took her paper with a gentle smile.
Seeing his smile, Shen Yao’s face turned red instantly. So Ye Chenfeng had liked her this early on! This time, she would take the initiative!
The girl whose seat had been taken stood there helplessly. She and Ye Chenfeng had recently started to get a little ambiguous. She thought he was good-looking and gentle, but only recently did she realize that he treated every girl the same way!
The girl didn’t interrupt them and went outside to the hallway to get some air. She would keep her distance from Ye Chenfeng from now on.
The morning classes passed quickly.
Xu Xinghe began packing up her backpack. When she finished, she noticed that Song Yu hadn’t moved at all. He was still sitting in his seat.
“Song Yu, aren’t you leaving?”
Song Yu’s body stiffened. He was the only day student in the entire school because he couldn’t afford the dormitory fees.
He needed to walk for twenty minutes to get home at noon and then start cooking. His grandmother at home needed his care. After cooking and eating, he would then immediately walk back to school.
Otherwise, he would be late for afternoon classes, and then he would lose his chance at the scholarship.
Song Yu’s hand fumbled around in his desk. Under Xu Xinghe’s confused gaze, he slowly pulled out a red cloth bag, stamped with the words “XX Supermarket Gift.”
For the first time, Song Yu felt humiliated. He couldn’t even bring himself to look up at her face. Were those bright eyes now filled with disgust?
Song Yu scrambled to shove all his books into the cloth bag in a panic.
But in his haste, the books came tumbling down with a loud “clatter.”
Song Yu’s heart stopped for a moment. He felt like a rat that couldn’t stand the light.
Seeing how flustered Song Yu was, Xu Xinghe found it a bit puzzling. She hadn’t even said anything, so why was he so anxious?
Xu Xinghe set down her little bunny backpack, crouched in front of Song Yu, and picked up each worn, grayish textbook from the floor.
She gently brushed the dust off each one before placing them back on his desk.
Crouched in front of him, Xu Xinghe could finally see his face more clearly. His eyes were pitch-black, completely devoid of light, like stagnant water in a muddy pond.
The young man looked frail, his face almost deathly pale. His thick, dark eyelashes stood out distinctly, trembling slightly as if they could stir a breeze.
Song Yu didn’t understand. Why was she helping him? He looked so utterly disgusting.
Shouldn’t she avoid him like everyone else?
Song Yu unconsciously bit down on his lower lip, his sharp canine teeth nearly piercing through it.
“Song Yu, don’t bite.” Xu Xinghe’s voice was soft, but she frowned at his action.
She reached out and gently pressed her finger against his lower lip, prying it free before it could break the skin.
Song Yu didn’t dare move a muscle. His whole body was frozen like a robot. His dull, lifeless eyes were fixed on her.
The soft touch on his lip sent Song Yu’s breathing into immediate disarray. He felt an electric current surge through his entire body, making him tremble uncontrollably.
