Chapter 14: The Evil God’s Curse!
by WuWangChapter 14: The Evil God’s Curse!
There were many different kinds of people from other races in this magic tower, and there were also many different offices.
But what made Louis most curious was that ‘Special Mysterious Affairs Handling Office’.
From Helen’s description, this office seemed to specialize in handling mysterious affairs, including other races, Magical Creatures, Wizards, Muggles, and even dragons, Demons, and Cultists.
They handled almost everything—that was some serious authority!
But this made Louis feel a bit puzzled.
Could two new Wizards who failed their assessment really enter such a department?
With the limited connections Ocris had now, could she really arrange for the two of them to be placed in such a major department?
“You know, Louis,” Helen spoke mysteriously. “I’ve been at the academy for so many years. But I have almost never seen the Agents from that office! I heard they are the elite among Agents, the most mysterious Wizards in the Ministry of Magic!”
“Each one of them has a legendary past!”
Helen’s words piqued Louis’s interest, but when he arrived at the doorway, Louis was stunned for a moment.
It looked like there was a lot of dust on the door.
However, after entering, he felt reassured because the inside looked much better than the outside—though there was still plenty of dust.
But still, it looked quite proper, like a little base for special Agents.
The room had all sorts of things: besides an Astrolabe, divination cards, and an alchemy table, there was even a small Potion herb garden, a damaged small Portal, and a Magic Circle inscribed with many Demon-related Incantation Texts.
There was also a medical room—it must have been for treating injured Agents.
The environment looked very nice, just a bit empty. The person originally in charge here was a middle-aged bald Wizard, and he was the only one in the entire room.
He was Director Trif. He looked ordinary, but he was not simple. He was Oliver’s disciple, making him sort of Ocris’s senior.
At the same time, Director Trif was also a proper noble. Although just a knight, his family had a long history and had many dealings with various dukes, princes, marquises, and earls.
From their conversation, Louis learned that this Mr. Trif was indeed an Agent, and moreover, a suit-card Inspector—’Two of Diamonds’. The number might seem small, but it squarely placed him among the Ministry of Magic officials.
After all, there were only so many Wizards in the whole world with Diamond, Heart, Spade, or Club cards.
And Agents with these suit cards were the elite among elites.
He had been doing this for thirty years—he was transferred to this department just two years ago… Well, it probably wasn’t because he was close to retirement.
As for the other Agents, their seniority was also very high! Their resumes were quite intimidating too.
This got Louis excited. This department was really something special!
Being able to enter here was an absolute honor!
During the conversation, Louis learned that Director Trif seemed to have some business that would take him away for a while recently. The other Agents also seemed to have been dispatched elsewhere recently.
After the introductions, Trif put on his tall hat and hurriedly left. Ocris gave Louis and Helen a very serious talk.
She would soon be taking over the position of Dean of Teaching Affairs, so she basically wouldn’t be in the office. And according to her, the matters this office usually handled were quite important.
There were often weird cases like exorcisms, business trips, capturing strange creatures, dealing with dark creatures, negotiating with devils, tracking down Cultists, and even rescuing hostages from Evil Dragons or Dark Wizards.
Basically, they handled everything that other department Agents handled, and also everything that other department Agents couldn’t handle.
These words couldn’t help but make Louis feel a surge of excitement.
What are we here for? To level up, fight monsters, and compete for supremacy!
Right?
We are not here to mess around with female Orcs, Goblins, or such things in some ‘Cross-Species Experimental Project’. As someone with the mission of a transmigrator, how can I waste time on such messy things?
Ahem… an 80 favorability, that should be considered quite high, right? The Little Dragon Girl’s office doesn’t seem too far from here either.
“But, sister,” Helen looked at the empty seats and asked curiously, “Doesn’t anyone usually stay here?”
“Well… the Ministry of Magic has quite a few external branch offices, so sometimes there might be a bit of overlap in functions.” Ocris’s expression looked a bit strange. “Ahem, you two should get some good experience here now. There will be more opportunities in the future.”
Louis’s heart sank.
Overlap?
Functional overlap is not a good thing.
And what did she mean by more opportunities?
“Ahem, Louis, Helen, you must not look down on the work here.” Ocris suddenly put on a stern face. “This job involves a lot of matters related to diplomacy; it’s very challenging. You two must not slack off here. Of course, since you’ve just arrived, there might be fewer tasks at first.’So that’s how it is!’
Louis and Helen glanced at each other with understanding and nodded deeply.
It’s fine, we’ll take it slow.
Ocris said a few more things. Although the two of them were currently only temporary workers, or here for an internship, if they performed exceptionally well, they could still have a chance to get a Ministry of Magic position. The tasks then would become even more demanding.
And the salary would be a lot!
After listening to Ocris’s speech, Louis’s mind settled down a bit.
He had overthought things.
Even though they didn’t pass today’s assessment, it was considered an Agent assessment.
Moreover, even though Ocris wasn’t doing great, even a thin camel is bigger than a horse.
It was still reasonable for her to arrange a really impressive department for her juniors.
However, might the challenges of the work here be too great? Look at all those medical devices; it looks quite dangerous!
Ocris finished her instructions and left. After she left, the two of them were both excited and nervous.
Helen especially talked a lot about her hopes for the future. To summarize, although she was a super noble second-generation + rich second-generation + official second-generation, she wanted to work hard on her own. And the work at this Special Affairs Handling Office was the first starting point on their future path.
Louis completely agreed with this.
This Storybook pulled him here, probably to save the world.
His future destiny was bound to be filled with bitterness and suffering. He would have to endure many hardships and face various challenges; he needed to be mentally prepared.
Thinking of this, Louis felt the weight on his shoulders suddenly grow heavier, and he couldn’t help but feel a sense of solemnity.
That very afternoon, the first difficult challenge began.
A Goblin arrived.
This Goblin gentleman was named ‘Kendrik Barriff’. He was dressed in a suit and tie, his little moustache neatly trimmed. But he walked with a limp.
The two of them invited him in. He wouldn’t sit down when offered a seat. He took off his hat and stood there, saying with a grave expression, “I am under a terrible Curse. I cannot sit… I can never sit again.”
He began his account:
“People all envy our ‘Barriff’ family, praising us as great bankers, but they don’t know our family has a secret no one knows…”
“Every single one, every single person is tormented by this devil!”
“We must have angered some Evil God or terrifying Ancient God and been hit with a terrible Magic Spell!”
“It’s a divine prank… divine punishment, it’s fate!”
“Mr. Trif warned us, if we want to truly escape the misfortune of this Curse, we must follow his advice… but how can we work if we can’t sit? Oh dear, oh my goodness, sir, miss. Please help me take a look.”
Then, this pained-looking Goblin gentleman nimbly climbed onto the bed in the medical room, slowly took off his pants, and pointed at his bottom.
After seeing the Goblin gentleman’s actions, Louis suddenly had a bad feeling.
Also, this medical room… wasn’t it for Agents after battling evil Demons?
Why was this Goblin gentleman so practiced at getting on the bed?
Miss Helen was still seriously climbing the tall bookshelf over there, consulting various ancient texts, but after Louis heard the Goblin gentleman’s story and looked at the place where the Goblin gentleman was being tormented by the evil spirit, his expression grew increasingly odd.
He fell into deep thought.
That’s hemorrhoids, isn’t it?
It’s hemorrhoids, right?!
This is my first job?!
This Storybook pulled me here to treat a Goblin’s hemorrhoids?!
And isn’t that a mouse hole, bro?!
You feeling uncomfortable, isn’t it because a mouse or snake crawled in there?!
“What do we do, what do we do, Louis!” Listening to Barriff’s painful moans and account, Helen wiped her sweat, already starting to panic. “What should we do? Should we go find Miss Ocris to take a look? This terrifying wound must have been caused by the dreaded Curse-powered ‘Evil God’s Finger’!”
“The poke is a bit deep.” Louis rubbed his face.
