Volume 3 Chapter 6
by Golden DragonVolume 3 + Chapter 6: The Go Club President
“I wouldn’t be so sure about that.” At that moment, a voice from outside the door instantly drew the attention of everyone inside the clubroom.
“That person is…!”
“O–Ouyang-senpai!” The instant Duan Haichen saw the senior he had admired day and night, his emotions surged like a dam bursting under a flood.
“Ouyang Qianxue!” Xia Bingdie was equally thrilled upon seeing the newcomer. At last, she had a chance to face off against Bai Yuxuan’s rival and avenge her. If she could defeat Ouyang Qianxue this time and humiliate her, surely Yuxuan-senpai would praise her.
“Qianxue!” The vice president lowered his head in slight guilt upon seeing her.
“I’m sorry, Qianxue. Even though I was here, I still…”
“No need to apologize. You’ve already done very well. You’ve just been interviewing so many freshmen, you’re simply too tired,” Ouyang Qianxue said as she walked in.
“Ouyang Qianxue, come and face me!” Xia Bingdie pointed directly at her and challenged.
“You are…?” Ouyang Qianxue looked at the girl with mild confusion.
“My name is Xia Bingdie. I’m from the student council.”
“The student council? Isn’t Bai Yuxuan the only member?”
“I just joined this year as a first-year. Back in middle school, I was already assisting Yuxuan-senpai with student council affairs.”
“I see, you’re Yuxuan’s junior. I understand the situation now. But I’m afraid I can’t accept your challenge.”
“Why not? Are you afraid?”
“No. It’s because your game hasn’t ended yet.”
“Huh? This game? I can defeat her very soon, so why don’t we save time and go straight to our match?”
In response to Xia Bingdie’s proposal, Ouyang Qianxue merely smiled faintly.
“In my view, this game is far from decided.”
“Hmph. I thought you were going to say something insightful. Looks like you, Ouyang Qianxue, don’t have much real skill after all, you can’t even recognize such an advantage?”
“If you don’t believe me, I can continue the game in her place,” Ouyang Qianxue said with a gentle smile.
“What a joke!” Xia Bingdie snapped, irritation rising.
“If I beat you while holding such an advantage, it would mean nothing to me!”
“But I truly believe there’s still more to this position. How about this, if I lose, I’ll agree to one of your requests. How does that sound?”
“Fine! Then it’s settled. If you lose, you must admit that your victory over Yuxuan-senpai relied on nothing but underhanded tricks!”
Xia Bingdie’s immense confidence stemmed from having trained under a professional Go player for two years. Moreover, she had practiced tirelessly in hopes of playing against Bai Yuxuan. Even facing Ouyang Qianxue, the so-called “Queen of Talents” of Sakura Academy, she felt no fear.
“Alright, I accept your condition.” With that, Ouyang Qianxue sat down across from her.
“You really do like Bai Yuxuan, don’t you?”
“I–I do not! I just… admire Yuxuan-senpai very much!” Xia Bingdie’s face flushed crimson as she protested.
“I see.” Qianxue had only meant it as a joke, but the girl’s reaction was far more intense than expected. It seemed Bai Yuxuan enjoyed quite the fortune with admirers. She glanced at Xia Bingdie.
Xia Bingdie was petite, with delicate and adorable features, giving her an overall impression of a small, exquisitely crafted doll.
“Then let’s begin!” Xia Bingdie said, a trace of irritation in her voice.
“Alright,” Ouyang Qianxue replied with a smile.
(Hmph, let’s see what tricks you have.)
With that thought, Xia Bingdie resumed her offensive against Ouyang Qianxue’s white stones.
However, to her surprise, Ouyang Qianxue ignored the attack entirely and instead launched strikes elsewhere on the board.
(Is she trying to exchange with me? Hmph, I have the advantage right now, even if we trade, I’ll still be the one who wins!)
Yet Ouyang Qianxue’s style was astonishingly unpredictable. With every exchange, she managed to secure a slight advantage. As the game progressed, the confidence on Xia Bingdie’s face gradually faded, replaced first by tension, then confusion, and finally, outright fear.
“So strong! Truly incredible, Ouyang-senpai actually turned such a disadvantage around perfectly in just a few moves!” Duan Haichen exclaimed, thrilled by the transformation on the board.
Twenty minutes later.
“I… I lost…” Xia Bingdie murmured, her spirit shattered.
“She turned that situation around! As expected of Ouyang-senpai, she’s amazing!” Duan Haichen leapt to his feet, brimming with excitement.
“As expected of the Go Club President! The only person in Sakura Academy’s history to lead three clubs at once!” The surrounding students were equally awestruck by Ouyang Qianxue’s stunning comeback.
“It’s alright. As the ancients say, victory and defeat are common in battle. This loss doesn’t matter, come challenge me again once you’ve improved,” Ouyang Qianxue said, patting Xia Bingdie on the shoulder.
“I don’t need your comfort!” Xia Bingdie shook off her hand and dashed toward the door, only to crash into someone.
“Who’s that?! Watch where you’re going!” she complained, clutching her aching nose.
At that moment, a cold voice sounded above her head.
“My apologies for not watching where I’m going.” Standing before her was Bai Yuxuan, her expression icy.
“Y–Yuxuan-senpai, why are you…?” Xia Bingdie asked, trembling.
“I came to discuss the freshman welcome event with you all. Instead, I hear you ran off to the Go Club to cause trouble, and even got yourselves taught a lesson. You’ve really brought me honor, haven’t you?”
“I–I’m sorry, Yuxuan-senpai…” Her face now held a mix of grievance and fear.
“How disgraceful.” Bai Yuxuan showed no pity, her tone as cold as ever.
At that moment, Xia Bingdie felt as though her heart had plunged into an icy abyss. Being spoken to like this by the senior she admired hurt even more than if she had slapped her.
“Bai Yuxuan, she only challenged me for your sake. You shouldn’t speak so harshly to a girl,” Ouyang Qianxue stepped forward and said.
However…
“Ouyang Qianxue, spare me your act. I don’t need your sympathy! Waaaah!” With that, Xia Bingdie burst into tears and ran out of the clubroom.
Watching her leave, Ouyang Qianxue couldn’t help but feel both amused and exasperated. Was she really just a child?
At that moment, Bai Yuxuan stepped forward and stopped in front of Ouyang Qianxue.
“Ouyang President, it’s about time we discussed matters between us, wouldn’t you say?”
“So that’s Ouyang-senpai’s rival, the student council president, Bai Yuxuan?” Duan Haichen was seeing her properly for the first time, having been too focused on Ouyang Qianxue during the opening ceremony.
“Damn it, this guy sends people to stir up trouble on the very first day of school!” Duan Haichen clenched his fists, gritting his teeth, itching to punch Bai Yuxuan in the face.
“Calm down. If you act impulsively now, you’ll only cause more trouble for Qianxue,” the vice president whispered, noticing his expression.
“There’s no need to get so worked up. I came to find Ouyang Qianxue merely to discuss some club-related matters for the new semester,” Bai Yuxuan said, having sensed Duan Haichen’s hostility.
“Now then, President Ouyang, please come with me to the student council office. We can talk at length there.”
