Chapter 805
by post_apiChapter 805: Fire Element at Sea
Jesse woke up from a daze, not sure how long it had been. The "Moving Pandaria" was still rocking. The corridor outside was soaked, the sky overcast, making it hard to tell day from night. He could barely sense the sun behind the clouds, and a cold wind blew from the sea.
Greed leaned by the window, looking into the distance. Jesse came up to him and said a long "Good afternoon" in Language Dwarven.
The dwarf frowned and turned. "No one greets with that phrase, you fool."
"Why not?" Jesse asked.
Greed replied, "That’s a farewell blessing. Think how silly it’d be to say ‘See you tomorrow’ to Vereesa in the morning. Plus, few dwarves use that now—maybe in plays. Even in the Age of Kings, only scholars said it. After studying Language Dwarven this long, I doubt how you learned Demonic and Orcish…"
"I learned Orcish from current Orc records. For Demonic, I have two demons at home who talk with me," Jesse said. "But my only Dwarven dictionary is ‘Drakken’s Khaz Modan Runes.’"
"No wonder," Greed said. "I’ve heard of that book—it’s ancient."
"It’s enough for learning the language of Kalimdor," Jesse added.
"Oh, right," Greed went on. "I’d like to see your book on the language of Kalimdor, Jesse. Since you want my help with Dwarven, why not lend it to me?"
He turned back to the sea. "I also want to truly talk with elements like sages do, not just use them to call thunder or storms…"
Just then, a Goblin Sailor hurried past. "Get back to your cabin now. The storm might get worse any moment."
"We will, thanks," Jesse nodded. As the Goblin Sailor ran off, he asked Greed, "Haven’t you heard the crew mention whispers from the sea?"
Greed coughed. "That’s like talking to the sky. I don’t feel tied to the sea anyway."
"Fine," Jesse said.
Greed tried speaking in Language Dwarven: "You learned to speak with elements from Dark Iron Dwarves in Ironforge." Jesse thought a moment, then replied in Dwarven: "Mostly the fire element."
Greed nodded and asked in Dwarven: "Can you hear the fire element’s voice at sea?"
That made Jesse realize he hadn’t spoken with fire in ages. Since leaving Ironforge for Stormwind, he’d been busy at places like The Slaughtered Lamb, preparing for Kalimdor, and adjusting to sea life.
His elemental language was much better than in Ironforge. Fire should hear him easier now.
He closed his eyes and felt for flames in the air. Here, the fire element’s voice was faint, almost gone compared to Ironforge. But when he called flames to his fingertips in elemental language, a bit of heat gathered, forming a small flame.
It flickered out fast in the mist, but Greed stared wide-eyed. Then he rattled off a lot in Dwarven about fire elements and summoning, even mentioning Hinterlands.
"Just speak Common," Jesse said.
Greed sighed. "I’m impressed, Jesse. When you called the element, that fire control reminded me of troll priests in Zandalar."
"Find a better comparison."
"Because your flame, though small, was as fierce as those trolls! Hard to link you to sages who roast meat with fire!" The dwarf chuckled. "But I’m curious, Jesse—if you can call fire at sea, why didn’t flames help when we fought in Elwynn Forest?"
"I’ve got plenty of unused tricks, Greed," Jesse bragged. "If my imp Saenor were here, I’d show you new moves. Ever heard of the Doomguard’s Cripple spell?"
"You think I haven’t seen that weird fel magic at the Dark Portal?" Greed shot back. "Bring your imp next time we spar. I’ll see if your Cripple beats demons!"
"Fine," Jesse nodded. "But about fire, I’m not good at using it in fights yet. You pushed me too hard that day—no room to try. Needs more practice."
"Try with our little Elven Wisp," Greed suggested. "She’s better against troll fire priests than me."
Jesse nodded; Greed was right.
He listened hard for elemental sounds. No flame voices at all. The sea and sky stayed silent, giving no sign.
"Can you hear elements here, Greed? Didn’t you learn from sages at Aerie Peak?"
"Sometimes, days ago," Greed said. "But I don’t know what they meant. That’s why I wanted your elemental language. Sages said it’s fine if you don’t understand—just respect elements, and they sense your goodwill. Knowing too much can hurt."
"I’m off to eat, Jesse. You head back too—that Goblin said the storm’s not over. Don’t fall in the sea. If you do, yell loud so I find you." The dwarf patted Jesse’s back and said in Dwarven: "And sleep well tonight. You look tired."
Jesse smiled in Dwarven: "You too."
He saw Greed was favored by sky and storm—they talked to him sometimes. He felt far behind.
He wondered what Kalimdor’s fire elements thought of him.
