Chapter 906: Mysterious Presence!
“Do you think this boy will pass tomorrow? The Demon Emperor always prefers chubby little boys, but this one doesn’t seem chubby enough.”
“This boy looks quite promising. Maybe he can pass.”
As the dozens of people gathered in formation on the square, they discussed Su Yi.
After silently shedding tears for a while, Feng Qier gently wiped her eyes with her sleeve before climbing onto a large rock.
Once beside Su Yi, Feng Qier didn’t speak or even glance at him. She simply sat quietly on the rock, her eyes fixed on the bright full moon in the night sky.
“Poor soul,” Su Yi thought, casting her a sidelong glance. He now realized that this was a woman who had endured great suffering. Despite her kindness and innocence, she had been abandoned by her entire clan.
How could the strong elders and influential figures of Feng Qier’s clan not see through the scheming methods employed by that sinister old man? It was evident that this was the result of a collective decision. Even Fourth Aunt, who had always been the kindest to Feng Qier, must have known that everything had been prearranged.
Except for Feng Qier herself, most of the clan likely knew that this was merely a formality. They had already decided to sacrifice Feng Qier in exchange for a year of peace for the entire tribe.
“I was just feeling sorry for you, wondering what I could do to help you, but in the blink of an eye, I’ll be just like you,” Su Yi thought.
After a moment, Feng Qier turned her head to look at Su Yi. Her fair face, illuminated by the moonlight, appeared both delicate and melancholic. Strands of her hair swayed gently in the night breeze, and though her eyes held sorrow, there was also a hint of charm in her gaze.
“I’ve heard the Demon Emperor is extremely cruel. Any girl sent to him is ruthlessly tortured. They say it’s terrifying—worse than death. I’d rather die now, but I can’t even do that. If I die, there will be one less girl in the tribe, and another will have to take my place. That girl’s parents and loved ones will grieve terribly. But I’m all alone. If I die, not many people will be sad, right…”
Feng Qier forced a smile as she looked at Su Yi. The smile seemed strained on her delicate face.
She continued, “Everything they’ve done, they thought I wouldn’t notice. I wanted to believe that I didn’t see it myself. I wanted to think that this was the result of my own choice—at least it would make me feel better. But why did they do this? The Elder Law Hall secretly changed my token. The elders, Elder Feng Yue, the powerful warriors—how could they not see through it? Aren’t they my own people? Am I not part of this tribe?”
Tears welled up in her eyes as she spoke, her voice trembling.
“Even if they told me directly, that it was for the sake of the whole tribe, I don’t think I would hesitate. But, unfortunately, my most beloved family members tried to hide it from me, thinking I wouldn’t know.
They don’t realize that this only makes my heart ache even more.
Maybe by doing this, they’ll feel better in their hearts. If I pretend not to know, perhaps it will ease their guilt…”
Feng Qier’s eyes filled with tears as she clenched her red lips, her discomfort and inner pain evident.
“This woman is not foolish—she actually figured it out,” Su Yi thought, surprised. He had assumed Feng Qier hadn’t noticed anything. But it turned out she was fully aware of everything. She had pretended not to know, enduring the pain in silence, just to make the others feel less burdened.
“Ah…”
Su Yi sighed inwardly, unsure whether to label this woman as overly naive or simply kind-hearted.
“I was raised by my tribe since I was little. Since they’ve chosen me, I will consider it as repaying the kindness of my people.”
As Feng Qier spoke, tears streamed down her face. Her lips were marked with the redness of her tightly bitten silver teeth. She continued, “But it still hurts so much… It’s so hard for me…”
Feng Qier’s emotions seemed to spiral out of control. Her delicate body trembled, and within her sparkling eyes, a faint blackness began to emerge. A strange energy started radiating from her, slowly spreading across her body.
Su Yi immediately sensed the peculiar energy. Though it wasn’t particularly strong for someone of his current cultivation level, it caused him immense discomfort.
The unsettling sensation disrupted Su Yi’s Supreme Chaotic Yuan Technique and even affected the Heavenly Yuan Demonic Soul within his mind.
A strange odor began to emanate from Feng Qier, spreading like black smoke through the air, lingering around the giant stone and slowly expanding outward.
“What a strange smell,” Su Yi thought, growing increasingly alarmed. The scent seemed corrosive, giving the impression it could destroy anything in its path.
“Be careful, Feng Qier is having another outbreak!”
“Oh no! Should we inform the elder? It looks like she’s relapsing again!”
The expressions of the ten people around the square changed drastically. As they caught whiffs of the odor, they instinctively retreated, their faces etched with fear.
“Feng Qier, wake up! You’ll hurt yourself like this—wake up!”
Suddenly, a figure dashed into the square, moving with incredible speed. Energy rippled beneath his feet as he climbed the giant stone, reaching Feng Qier’s side. He shouted urgently, “Feng Qier, wake up! Wake up!”
The young man appeared to be around the same age as Feng Qier, twenty-one or twenty-two. He wore plain, tight-fitting clothes that revealed his slim yet strong build. His kind face was framed by bright, lively black eyes. He gripped Feng Qier’s shoulders, his expression a mixture of seriousness and worry.
Hearing the loud shout, Feng Qier’s trembling body began to calm. The dark color in her eyes gradually faded. Her entire body shuddered as clarity returned to her gaze. She looked at the young man standing before her and, with a worried expression, asked, “Feng Pu, why are you here? Did I have another episode? Are you okay? Why are you so reckless? You were so close to me during my episode—you could’ve been hurt.”
“I’m fine. You need to control yourself, or you’ll hurt yourself too,” Feng Pu replied, shaking his head. His dark eyes gleamed with a playful light as he smiled mischievously.
Reaching into his mouth, he pulled out a small, white night pearl. The pearl emitted a soft glow, appearing hazy yet brilliant under the moonlight. Feng Pu held it out and said, “Look, I always carry this spiritual pearl with me. With it, you don’t have to worry about your episodes.”
“That’s good,” Feng Qier said, letting out a sigh of relief. She seemed reassured, knowing that the pearl could help prevent her from harming those around her during her episodes.
“Thank goodness everything’s fine now,” someone from the group of ten murmured as the rest sighed in collective relief.
From atop the giant stone, Su Yi watched the scene quietly. His gaze fell on the young man. So this was Feng Pu—the person Feng Qier had mentioned before. It was clear to Su Yi that Feng Pu harbored deep feelings for Feng Qier, though she appeared completely oblivious.
