Chapter 904: The Draw!
“Luckily, this one is still here. Has it been examined? Is it a chick?”
“It should be. The person Elder Feng Yue brought back should have checked.”
“Not very white, it seems. I wonder if it can pass.”
“Seems a little pale. I’m not sure if it will pass the test.”
The figures looked at Su Yi as they discussed, their tone as detached as if they were examining an object.
The middle-aged woman carried Su Yi through the crowd toward the front of the courtyard and set him aside, while Feng Qier stood to one side.
At that moment, dozens of young girls were waiting nearby. The oldest among them seemed to be about twenty years old, similar to Feng Qier, while the youngest appeared to be around fourteen or fifteen.
It was only then that Su Yi noticed the six or seven hundred people gathered in the courtyard. Among them, many elderly individuals sat at the front, their presence exuding authority, alongside several powerful-looking figures.
Su Yi recognized Elder Feng Yue, who had captured him earlier that day, as well as other prominent individuals like Feng Gu. They were all present.
“There are many strong individuals.”
As Su Yi’s gaze swept over the group of elderly figures and powerful cultivators, he deliberately converged his own energy. He could sense that there were at least five or more experts present at the Yuan Void Realm.
In the center sat an old man with white hair and a frail appearance, leaning on a twisted wooden cane. He looked as though a gentle breeze might knock him over, yet his dignified presence commanded the crowd’s attention.
Su Yi focused on the frail old man and quickly realized that, despite his seemingly weak appearance, the man’s strength likely surpassed even that of Feng Yue.
“Is this the young boy you brought back?”
The frail old man stepped forward, his sharp eyes fixed on Su Yi. He moved slowly, each step deliberate, until he was directly in front of him.
Su Yi held his breath, focusing intently to avoid being detected by these powerful figures. He carefully restrained his energy, blocking the natural flow within his body to make himself appear like someone under a seal or prohibition.
The old man scrutinized Su Yi closely. After a moment, his eyes flickered with a faint light, and he nodded. “A hidden strength, not yet fully matured, but with great potential.”
“Elder, all the unmarried women of the clan have gathered,” whispered a middle-aged woman—referred to as Fourth Aunt by Feng Qier—to the elderly man.
“Let’s begin, then!”
The elder nodded and, leaning heavily on his cane, walked unsteadily to the front of the courtyard. His seemingly fragile frame contrasted with the commanding air he carried. The crowd, which had been noisy just moments ago, immediately fell silent, their attention riveted on him.
“I’m sure you’ve all heard by now,” the elder began, his voice calm yet carrying a weight that reached every ear in the courtyard, “the girl we captured a few days ago had an accident… and died.”
The announcement sent ripples through the crowd, breaking the tense silence.
“How did the accident happen? What do we do now?”
“If we try to capture another one, we might run out of time.”
“What should we do? The Demon Emperor is sending someone tomorrow morning.”
As the elder’s words sank in, murmurs of worry and uncertainty swept through the courtyard. Nervous and serious expressions appeared on the faces of the gathered clan members.
“Why are you arguing? Be quiet and listen to the Elder.”
Amidst the group of powerful individuals and elders stood an elderly man in his sixties, thin-framed, with a slightly raised chin. His deep-set eyes flickered with an uncertain light, exuding a chilling aura.
As the old man spoke, the crowd immediately quieted down. Many turned their eyes toward him, their gazes filled with apprehension and fear.
Seeing the crowd fall silent, the Elder continued, “At this moment, there are less than three hours until dawn. It’s too late to go outside and find the necessary people. Therefore, the Elder Council has discussed and decided to draw lots from the unmarried women within the clan to select a replacement.”
“What? Search within our own clan?”
“How can this be? How can we sacrifice one of our own?”
The crowd grew restless again, many exchanging uneasy looks.
Upon hearing the Elder’s words, the group of young women turned pale, their expressions changing drastically.
“Everyone, please be quiet. This decision is the result of the Elder Council’s deliberation. At this point, there is no other choice. Sacrificing one person is the only way to guarantee the safety of our entire clan. Otherwise, the entire clan will suffer, and none of us will be able to escape.”
The cold and gloomy old man’s voice thundered over the murmuring crowd, his sharp gaze sweeping across the gathering.
The crowd fell silent once more, exchanging anxious glances, and no one dared to speak further. Deep down, everyone understood: sacrificing one person was the only way to ensure the safety of the whole clan. If they didn’t, no one would survive.
Seeing the crowd quiet down, the Elder gestured with a wave of his hand. A young man stepped forward, placing a stone table in the center of the courtyard. On the table was a sealed wooden box with a fist-sized opening at the top.
The Elder stood in front of the stone table, his cold and gloomy expression unchanging as he addressed the group of young women.
“Among the entire clan, only you forty-six are suitable. Inside this wooden box, there are forty-six bamboo sticks. Forty-five of them are the same length, but one is shorter. By drawing lots, the person who draws the shortest bamboo stick will be chosen.
“This is for the safety of the entire clan—for your loved ones and fellow clan members. Sacrificing yourself to protect the clan is an honor.”
After the Elder finished speaking, he waved his hand, signaling for the young women to come forward and draw their lots.
Su Yi stood silently, observing everything and listening carefully. He had already pieced together what was happening.
This group belonged to a large clan. For some reason, they were required to hand over a pair of young individuals—both still innocent—to the Demon Emperor in exchange for the safety of their clan.
The clan had already captured a young man and woman, but something had gone wrong, and time was running out. As a result, the elders decided to draw lots among their own clan members to find a replacement and protect the clan.
Surrounded by many powerful individuals, Su Yi remained cautious and vigilant, not daring to let his guard down. From his position, he could clearly see the process of drawing lots.
Each young woman appeared deeply anxious, their faces tense as they approached the wooden box. They knew all too well what being chosen would mean.
One by one, they trembled as they drew their lots, each terrified that they would be the unlucky one.
The atmosphere in the room was thick with tension. Everyone held their breath, their gazes fixed on the center of the courtyard.
A total of forty-six young women lined up to draw their lots. Feng Qier, who was last in line, waited nervously at the end.
As Feng Qier stepped forward, Su Yi’s eyes suddenly narrowed. He noticed a subtle surge of energy emanating from the Elder’s hand, flowing into the wooden box used for the drawing of lots.
