Chapter 609: Encounter with the Ever-changing Dragon!
The man appeared to be middle-aged, yet his build was robust and imposing. There was an unmistakable fierceness about him, a mark of someone who had spent many years in a life filled with danger and conflict. His presence was commanding, something that could only be earned by surviving countless battles.
Indeed, this man was far from ordinary. He was the captain of the Su family’s guard, Su Baihan. Though not a blood descendant of the Su family, his position within the family was significant. His name also carried weight across the entirety of Man City, having once served at the side of the revered Old Man Su Yuntian.
“Roarrrr…”
From the distance, the thunderous roars of demon beasts echoed, and the dim night air was pierced by the eerie glow of their eyes, which shone like burning embers.
“Ahh…”
Suddenly, a chilling howl, reminiscent of a wolf’s cry, cut through the air. The demon beasts around them flinched and their once vicious stares softened, growing inexplicably calm in that moment.
“Captain, look! What is that?”
Out of nowhere, someone pointed upwards. In the deep sky, a burst of crimson light shot through the air. A massive beastly shadow passed by at great speed, vanishing before anyone could comprehend it.
“Is that a demon beast? I’ve never seen anything like it.”
Su Baihan’s eyes followed the streak of light. It was too fast to properly identify, a fleeting image that vanished in the blink of an eye.
As night settled over Man City, distant roars of beasts could be heard, emanating from outside the city walls.
At the gates of the Su family, dim lanterns flickered in the still night. Guards stood vigilant, their eyes scanning the dark horizon. Recently, the appearance of an unsettling number of demon beasts near the city had prompted the Su family to heighten their security.
In the distance, a solitary figure emerged. His frame was slender but upright, and despite the darkness of the night, his eyes shone with an inner strength, flickering with a faint red glow. On his back, he carried an object wrapped in cloth—something that appeared like a sword, yet could also resemble a staff or a mace.
This figure was, in fact, Su Yi.
To avoid drawing attention, Su Yi had wrapped his broken sword in the worn cloth, concealing its true nature.
“Hoo…”
Standing before the gates of the Su family, Su Yi let out a long breath. After all this time, he had returned home. He could now finally reunite with his grandfather and Wan’er.
In an instant, he vanished and reappeared at the backdoor of the Su family. It had always been his secret entry point during his previous days here.
Now, with his current cultivation, slipping into the Su family unnoticed was no challenge for him.
The courtyard was eerily quiet, with everything seemingly unchanged.
A figure materialized quietly, gazing at the familiar courtyard. A surge of excitement filled their heart as they stood there, lost in their thoughts.
“Knock, knock.”
Su Yi gently tapped on the door, trying to calm the rising excitement within him. He hoped that his grandfather would be happy to see that he was still alive, and that his injuries had not worsened.
“Creak…”
The door slowly opened, revealing an elderly servant with a face lined with wrinkles. However, the sharpness of his eyes stood out, glowing with a strange clarity in the dim light. He looked at the worn figure before him, surprise written all over his face. Then, his eyes widened with recognition, and his expression shifted drastically. His voice quivered as he exclaimed, “Young Master Su Yi? Is it really you? You’re alive, you are…”
“Shh!”
Su Yi quickly gestured for silence, not wanting to disturb anyone inside. He nodded at the old servant, speaking in a hushed tone, “Where is Grandfather?”
From the start, Su Yi had sensed that this servant was not an ordinary man, and now it became clear—this was a cultivator of the Yuan Xuan Realm, a rare and noteworthy strength in all of Man City.
“The old master is inside resting. I’ll let him know right away. He’ll be overjoyed to hear that you’re still alive,” said the servant, struggling to contain his excitement.
“I’ll go to Grandfather myself. And please, do not tell anyone else about my return,” Su Yi instructed firmly as he stepped into the courtyard.
The old servant stood there, his gaze filled with astonishment as he watched Su Yi move deeper into the grounds. For some inexplicable reason, he felt a chill run down his spine. There was something different about Su Yi—an unspoken aura that made him feel more powerful than the old master himself.
Inside the quiet room, Old Man Su Yuntian sat in meditation, his eyes closed, enveloped in a faint glow. His aura fluctuated, steady and serene, as his complexion remained healthy and full of life.
“Hiss…”
Suddenly, Old Man Su Yuntian’s eyes shot open. With a flick of his hand and a spark of awareness, he spoke in a low voice, “Who goes there?”
“Grandfather, it’s me,” came the voice from outside the room.
The old man’s face shifted instantly. He sprang to his feet, the familiar voice striking him deeply.
“Su Yi, is that you? You’ve returned?”
The door opened, and an elderly figure rushed out, his hair as white as snow, his face a map of wrinkles, though his youth’s sharp features could still be seen beneath the passage of time. He stared at the worn figure before him, taking in the familiar face. Though it had lost some of its youthful luster, it had gained a new firmness and strength.
Su Yi looked at the old man, his heart swelling with emotion. His grandfather looked older than before, his hair whiter, his face even more lined with age—likely a result of the stress and worry he had carried during Su Yi’s absence.
“Grandfather, it’s me, I’m back,” Su Yi said, tears welling up in his eyes. Without a second thought, he dropped to his knees in reverence.
“Su Yi, is it really you…?” Old Man Su Yuntian trembled, his hands reaching out to touch Su Yi’s face, as if to reassure himself that this was real. The warmth of his touch confirmed it, and he laughed joyously, tears streaming down his weathered cheeks. “I knew it, my grandson wouldn’t die so easily. I was sure you’d turn calamity into fortune.”
“Su Yi, you have been unfilial. You’ve made me worry so much,” said Su Yi, his eyes misty. He could feel the weight of his grandfather’s concern.
“Child, get up. What matters is that you’re alright. That’s all that matters,” Old Man Su Yuntian said, lifting Su Yi to his feet. He inspected him carefully, looking for any signs of injury or harm.
“Grandfather, what about your injuries?” Su Yi asked, now noticing the aura radiating from the old man. While he had once been unsure of his grandfather’s cultivation, he could now sense that the old man had reached the Yuan Void Realm.
“My injuries are long gone. They healed just yesterday, and I even broke through to the Yuan Void Realm. I owe it to a mysterious benefactor and the people from the Divine Sword School,” Old Man Su Yuntian said with a grin, clearly elated. Not only had he recovered, but he had also stepped into a whole new level of strength.
