Chapter 1149: Time to Change the Rules!
Indeed, the revenue generated by a third-rate sect is nothing to scoff at. With such abundant resources, the sect could sustain its operations comfortably for quite some time.
Originally, the Seven Star Sword Sect governed three cities, each contributing a substantial income.
After their destruction, all of their assets were seized, resulting in a considerable windfall.
Su Yi mused over how much Yuan Stone he might earn if he were to sell off the three cities entirely.
“Sect Leader Su, this is just a small portion. There’s much more where that came from. Collectively, these three cities can yield similar resources annually,” Elder Liu remarked with a grin.
Su Yi nodded in acknowledgment. With a stable annual resource flow, the value of keeping the cities far outweighed selling them off.
Besides, Su Yi now controlled a mineral-rich territory. Compared to that, even the combined value of three cities couldn’t compete.
“Thank you, Elder Liu.”
He carefully tucked away the space bag, quite pleased with what he had received.
He thought he might visit the other two cities formerly held by the Golden Sword Sect soon. He assumed Liuhe Sect had also benefitted handsomely from this arrangement.
“By the way,” Su Yi asked, curiosity piqued, “is the Mysterious Sword Gate managing Sword Star City alone, or do other forces share control?”
He had noticed earlier that the patrolling disciples didn’t appear to be affiliated with the Mysterious Sword Gate, which he found rather odd.
Elder Liu gave a faint smile, tinged with helplessness. “Sect Leader Su, you may not be aware, but the Mysterious Sword Gate already oversees three cities. Taking on another three has stretched our manpower thin. We had no choice but to partner with some minor powers to help maintain order, offering them a share of the profits. Otherwise, we’d be draining our own defenses back at the sect.”
“I see,” Su Yi replied thoughtfully.
“The group currently helping manage Sword Star City is the Red Tiger Gang. Their leader, Zhuang Changren, is at the Yuan Emperor Realm and now serves as one of our elders. His deputy, Wu Pingniang, is at the Yuan Void Realm and is acting as the city’s deputy master,” Elder Liu elaborated.
Su Yi gave a slight nod. With cultivators of that caliber in charge, it was no surprise the city was under firm control.
He suspected that, given this redistribution of duties, the Mysterious Sword Gate might be lacking in high-level warriors within the sect itself.
“I came here to assess how things were running in Sword Star City. I wandered the streets earlier, and everything seemed orderly and well-maintained,” Su Yi commented.
“Haha, no worries, Sect Leader Su. Managing these cities comes with benefits for us as well, so naturally, I wouldn’t allow any sloppiness,” Elder Liu replied with a chuckle.
“By the way, do you happen to know what Sect Leader Ji has been occupied with recently?” Su Yi asked suddenly.
In truth, Ji Hanluo was on his mind more than Ji Tianfu. For reasons he couldn’t quite explain, he had been thinking about her often.
When Elder Liu heard the question, his expression turned serious. After ensuring there were no eavesdroppers nearby, he leaned closer and said earnestly, “This was something I wanted to bring up with you. When Sect Leader Ji visited previously, it wasn’t just to deliver the Overlord Sect’s share. His main objective was to request cooperation—to form an alliance between your sect, ours, and Liuhe Sect, to eliminate the Green Dark Sect.”
“The Green Dark Sect?”
Su Yi’s eyes narrowed at the name. He had past conflicts with that sect and knew their reputation well.
At present, only a handful of third-rate sects remained in the region. The Seven Star Sword Sect and Golden Sword Sect had both fallen. Even the Sky Spider Sect, located further away, had been eliminated by the Overlord Sect. The Green Dark Sect was the last major nuisance.
Su Yi also recalled their prior attempts to target the Mysterious Sword Gate, including manipulating the Sea Dragon Gang to abduct Ji Hanluo. That plan had ultimately backfired.
“Recently, the Green Dark Sect has been incessantly harassing us. Were it not for our responsibilities managing the cities, our Sect Leader would’ve led a counterattack by now. Thankfully, Liuhe Sect has been supporting us, so the disruption hasn’t been too severe,” Elder Liu said grimly.
He hesitated for a moment, then added, “That said, their behavior has taken a strange turn lately. They’ve suddenly gone quiet and aren’t interfering anymore. It’s quite suspicious.”
Su Yi furrowed his brow. “Their silence is likely a prelude to something bigger. They may be planning something behind the scenes.”
Unable to pin down their motive, he decided to brush it aside for the moment. “Once I speak with Sect Leader Ji, we can coordinate a plan. That sect has grown too bold. It’s time we wipe them out.”
As he spoke, a deadly aura surged around him.
Elder Liu stood silently, visibly impressed by Su Yi’s confidence and decisiveness.
Such words wouldn’t carry much weight if uttered by others. Even the sect leaders of Liuhe Sect or the Mysterious Sword Gate would think twice before challenging the Green Dark Sect directly. Their power was not insignificant, and any direct assault could turn into a prolonged war.
But from Su Yi, the words felt different—because the Overlord Sect had already proven itself more than capable. The fall of the Seven Star Sword Sect and Golden Sword Sect had made that perfectly clear.
After chatting for a while longer, Su Yi stood up and politely said, “Elder Liu, I won’t take more of your time. I’ll leave things here in your capable hands.”
“Of course, Sect Leader Su!”
Elder Liu rose and personally escorted him to the gate of the City Master’s residence.
However, when they stepped outside, both men stopped in surprise.
“Leader Su, I was wrong. I sincerely apologize for offending you. Please forgive me!”
A group of ten knelt on the ground, trembling. Among them was Wu Tianpeng.
Their faces were pale, their bodies visibly shaking in fear.
Everyone in the Chaos Realm knew of Su Yi’s ferocity. He had slain elite disciples without hesitation and stared down second-rate sect leaders. A man of such ruthless reputation was not to be trifled with.
Realizing the gravity of their mistake, Wu Tianpeng and the others decided to take the only path left—beg for forgiveness. If Su Yi didn’t retaliate, they feared that others in the Mysterious Sword Gate might.
“What is the meaning of this?”
Elder Liu’s expression turned cold, and a wave of energy radiated from his body. As a Yuan Emperor, his aura alone made people uneasy.
He hadn’t expected Wu Tianpeng—the son of Deputy City Master Wu Pingniang—to provoke Su Yi of all people. His disappointment was palpable.
Before Elder Liu could press further, Su Yi raised a hand to calm him. “There’s no need. Let it go.”
Turning his gaze to the group on the ground, Su Yi said casually, “The past is past. Get up.”
None of them dared move.
“You heard the Sect Leader—stand up! Or are you deaf?” Elder Liu barked.
“Th-thank you, Sect Leader Su!”
Still trembling, Wu Tianpeng and the others struggled to their feet.
“It’s a small issue. Since we’re all part of the same alliance now, there’s no need to dwell on grudges.”
Su Yi looked to Elder Liu, then addressed the group, “In this realm, the strong have the right to speak. I respect that. But remember—our real aim in managing a city is profit. We gain wealth through trade, taxes, and the activities of independent cultivators and small factions. Scaring them away with excessive enforcement helps no one. If people stop coming here, it’s our loss.”
Everyone fell into thoughtful silence.
Even Elder Liu was impressed by Su Yi’s insight.
“I’ll be on my way now,” Su Yi said with a nod, departing alongside Su Xiaoshuai.
In his past life, he’d learned that prosperity came from popularity. The more people a city attracted, the greater its revenue.
While the law of the jungle ruled the Chaos Realm, a city under his control had to follow a different kind of order. There had to be a balance.
Had he retaliated against Wu Tianpeng, it would have discouraged future visitors—and the city’s economy would’ve suffered for it.
“This Sect Leader Su… really isn’t ordinary,” Elder Liu muttered, watching the young man disappear into the distance.
Legends about Su Yi were plenty, but this encounter had given Elder Liu firsthand insight into his wisdom and strength.
He not only dominated with power, but had sharp instincts for leadership and strategy.
“In that case, we may need to revise the rules. Managing a city is more than just policing and collecting dues.”
With that, Elder Liu turned and walked back into the residence.
The others returned to their duties, still reflecting on what they had witnessed.
Wu Tianpeng lingered the longest, exhaling heavily before he, too, left the scene.
