“If you’re his friend, you can call him.” The receptionist made it plain she didn’t believe a word Su Rui said.

“Calling him is useless — his phone is off!” Su Rui hadn’t expected that he, who could ride roughshod over anyone, would be stopped cold at this particular hurdle. It was truly exasperating.

The receptionist spread her hands and said, “Then there’s nothing I can do.”
