Chapter 595
by post_apiChapter 595: Difficult Communication
Vereesa and the Kaldorei woman talked for a while, during this time, Jesse noticed that she kept looking at the other people over here.
Greed was feeling around the walls nearby, not sure if he was looking for another hidden pathway to enter, or checking for magic traps and the like.
Mosa sat on the side watching the dwarf bustling back and forth, sometimes looking towards the entrance of the cave on the other side of the forest, unclear what she was thinking.
This weak Kaldorei had never left Eldre’Thalas, Jesse thought to herself.
Perhaps in her hundreds or thousands of years of life, all she had seen and heard was within these layers of tall walls.
It felt frightening to imagine, Eldre’Thalas was like a prison within layers for the inhabitants inside.
You could tell from the Kaldorei’s expression, her eyes flickering, hands and feet trembling occasionally, even though Jesse couldn’t understand what she was saying, she could feel her stuttering at times, her tone and emotions wavering.
And then, there was that sealed door.
With Jesse’s ability to sense Arcane energy, he could feel a huge difference in the energy sealing the door inside compared to the small door outside. The door sealing the demon must have been completed with intricate and complex spells and magic.
Vereesa said at that moment, "She is unlucky, and she doesn’t know much."
"Doesn’t she live inside here?" Greed turned around and asked.
"She came here from the west. She was originally a keeper of a magic tower. After the Ogre invasion, the magic arrays in the eastern region were disrupted. She was ordered to come here to help a noble maintain the magic seal. So she doesn’t know exactly how many demons are imprisoned here and how many have been released… it’s all unclear."
"This deceased Kaldorei probably knew more. He was her teacher," Vereesa said, looking at the male elf corpse on the ground.
"Didn’t you ask about Dethmoora?" Jesse inquired.
"I did," Vereesa replied, "She has no idea about that name. I tried translating the Darkeye family name into various ancient Elven languages. I thought that if she had even heard a little about the legend of Dethmoora Darkeye, she could understand what I was trying to express."
"Dethmoora Darkeye," Greed looked back and said, "A warlock from the Highbornewarlock clan wielding the Eldre’Thalas dagger, and no one in Eldre’Thalas knows them?"
"The Reliquary only speculated based on these clues, Greed," Jesse said.
"But Shandris Feathermoon also thinks she’s a Shen’dralar," Greed said.
Hearing the word Shen’dralar from the dwarf, the Kaldorei woman looked over.
"Because the place with the most surviving Highborne now is here in Eldre’Thalas," Jesse said.
The dwarf asked again, "Are you saying there are Highborne surviving in other places today?"
"I don’t know," Jesse said.
The dwarf pointed at the frail woman and said, "This Highborne is only surviving in this city because of that demon’s power, looking so weak like this. I highly doubt other Highborne outside could survive this long. Don’t forget what General Sentry said, leaving Eldre’Thalas means giving up immortality."
"She is neither a so-called Highborne, nor an ancient mage who lived from ten thousand years ago until now," Vereesa shook her head, saying, "She is just a young Kaldorei commoner, Greed. Not all residents in Eldre’Thalas are nobles, only members of Shen’dralar are."
"Alright, alright, I don’t have time for history lessons or elven culture lessons, Vereesa," Greed adjusted his beard, "I just have a bad feeling that we might have come here for nothing but what a bunch of Satyrs left behind."
"But her not knowing Dethmoora doesn’t mean anything," Jesse said, "First of all, not everyone in this city may know each other, and if she’s just a mage among commoners, her chances of encountering noble-like Shen’dralar are even slimmer. Second, more than one person has told me that Dethmoora sounds like an alias. Does that name sound like an elven name to you, Greed?"
Greed closed his lips tightly, swirled his tongue inside his mouth, and looked at the Kaldorei woman sitting in the corner. The woman seemed dazed due to extreme fear, nervousness, despair, and sadness.
It’s very normal to feel trapped in this cold hall, with dangerous plants outside that could harm you anytime, Ogres on one side, and demons imprisoned that could break free at any moment. The only Kaldorei companion who could help is either hiding behind the gate in the garden or blocked by Ogres in the city miles away.
She felt abandoned by the whole world she knew, and the last person who stood by her died for unknown reasons. The strange invaders who brought her a glimmer of hope seemed to have bizarre shapes.
"What is her real name?" Greed asked.
Jesse looked at Vereesa and said, "We are looking for a warlock who used to live in Eldre’Thalas, summoned many demons, wrote a lot about demons, and is a woman who escaped and never returned."
Vereesa nodded and tried to translate for the Kaldorei. The Kaldorei shook her head and said something.
As soon as she shook her head, Greed and Jesse looked at each other, leaning against the wall and sighing.
"We are here to find that demon, aren’t we, Jesse?" Greed urged, "Hurry up and ask about the Doomguard."
Vereesa hesitated before saying, "Don’t rush, she is just a low-ranking spellcaster sent here, she doesn’t know much about the demons inside, Greed, I told you before. And she is very unstable and doesn’t trust us enough."
"The most important question is also the last question," Jesse pointed to the magic seal and said, "Can she open that door?"
After Vereesa asked, Kaldorei confidently said a word, then explained a few sentences. Greed said, "It’s obvious, she won’t open it."
"Opening this door will release the demon inside, causing chaos in the whole city," Vereesa said. "She has been guarding this door for a long time and doesn’t want to give up just like that."
"Isn’t this city chaotic enough? And she is clearly a pawn who can be sacrificed anytime, just to protect those nobles hiding behind the gate!" Greed said emotionally. "So, whether we release it or not, either we take out those Ogres, take out the Shen’dralars, get taken out by these two groups, it’s all for the better."
"Or run into Kalimdor," Jesse said.
"It depends on how many we can kill," Greed said.
In the game’s story background, there was no mention of the demons from Eldre’Thalas being imprisoned here. Years later, the Satyrs took over, the demons inside disappeared completely, and this Kaldorei mage was nowhere to be found.
So, in the end, this seal must have failed in various ways, either broken by the demons inside, or eventually breached by the Ogres.
Greed actually made a good point that it wouldn’t hurt to kill some here. Vereesa spoke with the elven woman for a while, and at a certain point, the woman’s eyes seemed to light up a bit, and soon after she agreed.
Greed and Jesse sat on the side, feeling like their journey might end here, and they might have to try breaking the seal themselves. When they saw the elf suddenly relax, they both felt a bit surprised.
"Why did she agree again?" Greed asked. "What did you tell her?"
"I told her we killed an Annihilan," Vereesa shrugged.
"It’s not really lying, right?" Jesse said.
"Not at all," Greed replied.
