Chapter 594
by post_apiChapter 594: The Last Guardian
Mosa carefully moved through the trees, frequently pausing to look into the distance, sometimes stopping for minutes or even longer. Jesse and the others patiently followed the lioness, knowing there was no one more reliable than a Druid in this kind of garden.
Jesse didn’t know how long he had been wandering in the forest when he finally saw the shadow of a huge wall ahead. Arcane lights were burning in front of a tightly closed stone door, quite eye-catching among the tree shadows.
Several people stepped out of the bushes and arrived at the door. Mosa transformed back into a Tauren, Vereesa stood with others while holding a bow, watching the forest for any strange creatures like active plants that might have followed them.
Jesse used Detect Demon to scan the trees and walls around, even above the huge wall, because he remembered that in the game, there were several Satyr Killers lurking here. One careless move could lead to an ambush. Even though the Ogre said there were no demons here, Jesse couldn’t lower his guard, as the Ogre hadn’t ventured deep into this area.
However, Detect Demon did not detect any traces of demons.
In the game, the gate at the end of this garden was open, but now it was tightly closed, with a hint of magical power lingering above.
Is this sealed by magic?
"What should we do now?" Greed asked.
"Should we try knocking on the door?" Jesse suggested.
Vereesa glanced back and evaluated the door. Greed walked up and asked softly, "Is anyone there? We are not Ogres!"
"The elves here might not speak our language," Jesse said.
Vereesa glanced at Jesse and said, "Should I go ask?"
The others all nodded.
Vereesa reluctantly walked to the front, greeted the door in ancient elvish, then said something, but after a few minutes, the door remained unchanged.
Greed glanced at Jesse and muttered, "Too bad our mage is not that good, otherwise we could try to dispel the magic on this door…"
Jesse had nothing to argue with, and Vereesa then said, "I can give it a try."
"You can?" the dwarf asked in surprise.
"Of course." Vereesa slung her bow, raised her hands in a casting gesture, and asked, "Has Lady Valindra Sunblade not told you about Quel’dorai magic?"
"What what what…" Greed suddenly couldn’t speak clearly, "How did you know?"
Vereesa did not speak, she just smiled, her eyes shining with magical light, then slowly closed her eyes.
She did not chant any spells, the arcane energy in her hand flowed like water with her fingertips, and suddenly the seal on the door disappeared.
Greed nodded admiringly, Jesse was also surprised, but the most surprised was actually Vereesa. She opened her eyes to look at the slowly opening stone door, moved her lips, and after a while said, "I never thought I could actually dispel the seal of this ancient gate…"
"The door is very old, but the seal may not be." Saenor peeked out from his bag and whispered, "This was a spell cast not long ago, elf, can’t you feel it?"
"So what if I can’t feel it, I’m not a Magus," Vereesa said.
Just as they were about to enter, suddenly there was a shout from inside.
"Taina, Eshnu, Delosaril!"
This was clearly Elvish, even though Jesse couldn’t understand a word.
There was obvious joy in the voice, and after a noisy footsteps, a figure appeared at the entrance, but suddenly stopped upon seeing Jesse and the others outside the door.
The newcomer paused, she was an elf lady, much slimmer than the sentries at Feathermoon Stronghold. Her skin was a dark shade, her long pale hair reached her waist, and her eyes sparkled with a mix of magical energy and shadow power.
Her eyes darted between a few people and finally settled on Vereesa.
"Quel’dorai?"
Upon hearing this term, Vereesa’s expression became complicated. She knew it referred to the Highborne, not the residents of Quel’Thalas.
She spoke in Elvish, and the lady in front of her seemed hesitant, taking a while before responding. The others around stood watching the two elves converse.
The expression on the stranger elf’s face grew sadder. After their conversation ended, Vereesa told Jesse, "The Ogres’ attack broke the magical defenses here. She and some companions were defending this place, but when the defenses fell, things spiraled out of control inside. Some of her companions went in to fix the magic array but never came out. Later, demons tried to escape, so they had to magically seal the door and wait for help. She must have mistaken us for reinforcements."
"What demons?" Jesse asked.
"The demons in the prison," Vereesa explained. "The city’s leader, Tose Deline, wanted to harness their power as a backup energy source, so he sealed them deep within this district. The Ogre attack broke the magical balance… which caused the chaos with the prison magic."
Jesse remarked, "That’s why we can’t sense the demons, because the door inside is magically sealed."
"It should be like this," Vereesa said.
Greed asked, "Are there any other elves inside?"
Before Vereesa could answer, the elves immediately said something anxiously. Vereesa responded helplessly.
"What did she say?" Greed asked again.
"She wants us to leave this place because Eldre’Thalas does not allow outsiders to enter," Vereesa said.
Jesse said, "Who can control us? If there were still someone, these elves wouldn’t be trapped here, while the Ogres outside are freely roaming their city."
"I said the same thing," Vereesa said. "I said that now other than us, she can’t rely on anyone else."
"Are you planning to rescue her?" Greed asked.
"She might help us find Dethmoora," Jesse said. "Haven’t you heard what she said? Inside is a demon cage, Greed. What if the warlock’s demon is inside?"
"Okay," Greed said.
The Kaldorei woman looked outside and pointed towards the door, saying something. Vereesa said, "She wants us to go inside, the plants outside are dangerous."
"Aren’t these plants their allies?" Jesse asked.
"No," Vereesa said, "She mentioned that these plants are controlled by the Shen’dralar behind another gate. Even if she enters recklessly and provokes the plants inside, she will be killed. But at least these plants protect this district, preventing the Ogres outside from attacking easily, so she is considered protected too."
"Another gate?" Greed asked, "Are you referring to the one we saw when we first came down?"
"I’m not sure," Vereesa said.
"Let’s go inside and discuss," Jesse suggested.
Several people followed the Kaldorei into the passageway, walking through a long corridor to reach a hall.
The hall used to be quite beautiful and exquisite, but now it was filled with collapsed stone pillars and statues, with many cracks on the walls. Thick vines squeezed through the cracks, gripping the walls as if trying to forcefully widen the gaps.
In the middle of the hall, there was a shallow pool. Seeing this pool immediately brought back memories for Jesse of when he used his warlock to defeat the water elemental B0SS alone.
Even the damaged edges of the steps and the stones on the ceiling exposed in the pool were in very similar positions.
The water elemental appeared because of the arrival of the Satyr, attempting to enslave the elemental power of the entire Eldre’Thalas. Now the pool is very calm without any ripples, confirming that the Satyr did not enter the city.
A male elf sat by the pool and seemed to have already passed away, showing no signs of life.
A Kaldorei woman walked up to him and glanced at him, her eyes seemingly numb.
On the other side of the pool was a platform. Jesse remembered that in the game, there was a Satyr leader on top of it. To the left of the hall, at the end of the hallway, there was an open doorway that should lead directly to this platform through the passage.
As for the passage on the right… the door there was sealed shut, with a rather complex magical seal placed on it.
The ranger had been staring at the door ever since they entered. Jesse asked, "Is it in there?"
"Yes," Vereesa said. "The traces of magic are very strong, Jesse."
