Chapter 589
by post_apiChapter 589: Eldre’Thalas
The walls of Eldre’Thalas were damaged in some places, while other parts were still intact. The damaged areas were overgrown with plants, with small trees and low plants peeking out of the cracks. Even the intact sections were not perfectly clean. Jesse could feel traces of ancient magic lingering on the walls, indicating that the defense energy of the walls had not completely failed, but rather deteriorated gradually in different areas.
The walls were decorated with intricate vine patterns and occasionally featured elven reliefs. Among them was a relief of a female elf with severed legs looking up at the sky. The elf was slim and graceful, wearing what seemed to be a silk robe, in stark contrast to the style of the sentries at Feathermoon Stronghold. This carving likely depicted the nobles of the Kaldorei Empire – the Highborne.
At that time, the sentries and guards wielding swords and bows were not valued, and the belief in Natural Magic seemed to have emerged from rural areas.
There were no guards on the walls, whether Ogre or elf. A black animal, whether a cat or a ferret, swiftly climbed up along the greenery on the wall without any signs of caution. Once it reached the top, it disappeared without a trace, appearing to be familiar with the route. The animals had long made themselves at home in these places.
Following the wall eastward for about twenty minutes, they reached a corner where the wall turned north.
Greed, leading the way, was about to continue north to search for the gate when Jesse said, "We shouldn’t go north."
"Why?" Vereesa asked, turning back.
Jesse explained, "The main entrance of Eldre’Thalas faces south. If we keep going north, we’ll only get further away."
"Why didn’t you say so earlier," Greed turned around and replied.
"I thought if we kept walking east along the city wall, we would reach the main gate. But we went the wrong way, and this city is much bigger than I imagined," explained Jesse.
Vereesa walked back and asked, "Where did you learn this?"
Jesse replied, "We read about Eldre’Thalas in the books we saw in Satyr."
"Ah, it seems familiar," the ranger nodded.
Jesse couldn’t relate the complex Eldre’Thalas magic defense illustrations in the books to the actual terrain here. Moreover, they didn’t bring those heavy books describing ancient city knowledge with them to escape. Jesse relied solely on his own understanding of the game to explain this.
Molofeel watched herself next to him. He knew that the succubus could always tell when he was lying, but she couldn’t expose her master to others.
They walked back for a while and, when the sun was almost directly overhead, Jesse saw ruins of tilted tall towers ahead. The tops of these towers were similar in style to the broken house where they rested a few days earlier.
"Oh my goodness," Greed ran forward for a bit and looked up to the right. Others also turned to see, and Jesse couldn’t help but gasp.
The main entrance of Eldre’Thalas.
The wide and flat uphill path was full of greenery, with beautiful tall pillars and stone monuments engraved with symbols on both sides of the path. There were mysterious tall arches and endless elegant stone carvings in the deep corridors that could not be seen.
"I thought after seeing Ironforge, no other city could amaze me like that," Greed said with a gulp. "But compared to Ironforge, it’s still a bit lacking, just a little bit."
He gestured with his thumb and forefinger, Vereesa said, "That’s because you haven’t been to Silvermoon City, dwarf."
"Then let me into Quel’Thalas," Greed said. "If good things aren’t shown, it’s as good as not having them."
Jesse frowned, and as expected, Greed patted his chest armor and said, "Just like my new treasure here, fits well, looks beautiful. It’s a bit heavy, but perfect for a skilled warrior like me."
Vereesa and Jesse sighed helplessly at the same time.
"Fits well, beautiful," Mosa repeated the key words from the dwarf’s words.
Greed smiled contentedly and said, "The closer a race is to nature, the more they understand the beauty of it. This is why the Wildhammer clan will eventually ally with the Tauren."
"Ugly," Molofeel said.
Vereesa almost couldn’t hold back her laughter, and Greed immediately said, "I have nothing to say to demons…"
"Let’s go, let’s go…" Jesse pointed to the path ahead and said.
"Are we going in through the main gate?" Vereesa looked around and asked, "Have you noticed that there doesn’t seem to be many people here?"
Vereesa’s words reminded Jesse that in the game, he would usually charge straight through the main gate of Dire Maul, ignoring all the Ogre and hyenas that would aggro along the way.
But normally in the game, there would be Ogre Guards patrolling this path and clearing, yet there was no one in sight here.
Greed walked ahead for a while, looked up at the elevated path and said, "Didn’t that Halforcen guy say that there were many people attending the arena held by the Ogres here, why is it so deserted?"
"Greed, come here." Vereesa waved urgently, pointing to a stepped stone platform beside the path where a few people took cover.
Then, from the arched giant gate above the path came the sound of heavy footsteps and creaking of rotten wood.
The sound grew louder and the vibrations became clearer, Jesse saw the rainwater puddle on the stone platform rippling with each step.
The footsteps suddenly stopped nearby, followed by the sound of trees rubbing and breaking, Vereesa peeked out next to the wall and then quickly pulled back, Jesse looked up and saw an old man’s face staring into the distance from above, a huge wooden tooth extended over several people’s heads.
This is a war ancient tree!
The enormous walking ancient tree is an ancient ally of the Kaldorei, who protect the forests of Kalimdor, obedient to the commands of the Kaldorei, guarding the elves’ towns and important strongholds.
In Dire Maul, there is a B0SS called Twisted Ancient Tree, a huge ancient war tree, but that tree guards the seal of a magical gate deep inside Dire Maul, while this walking ancient tree on the outskirts of Dire Maul seems to be nonexistent in the game.
In other words, the Ogres might not have completely taken over the gate of Eldre’Thalas at this time, so this unbeatable ancient tree simply stays here without doing anything.
Greed looked at Mosa, probably wanting to ask if Mosa could communicate with the ancient tree, but Tauren shook her head, indicating she couldn’t communicate with this ancient tree either.
The ancient tree probably isn’t aware that the city it guards has been breached from elsewhere already, Jesse could feel that it has been severely corroded by Shadow Power, perhaps having lost its own mind, only patrolling out of habit for thousands of years.
Once it turned and walked through the archway, Vereesa pointed to the east and said, "I heard some noise over there, let’s head in that direction."
