Chapter 550
by post_apiChapter 550: The First Clue
The depths of the Maraudon dungeon were dark and complex. By this point, there were few traces left of the Centaur’s construction. Although Jesse was quite familiar with the Maraudon in the game, he could hardly recognize it while walking around here.
In fact, he felt that even with a detailed map, he might still get lost in such a dungeon.
However, luckily, the dungeon was filled with clusters of crystals. Vereesa could use the faint magic emitted by these purple crystal clusters to remember their distribution characteristics and determine where they had been, ensuring that the team did not get completely lost.
Previously, when entering the Holy Sepulcher, Jesse had already felt that the Centaur-made tombs were much more complex and vast than the Centaur graveyard outside the entrance of the Maraudon dungeon in the game.
As he entered the deep cave covered in purple crystals, he felt like he had stepped into another world, a mysterious space completely unrelated to the game he used to play.
Thinking back to the time at Lushwater Oasis, gazing at the hills beyond the oasis, Jesse even wanted to go over and see what the legendary Wailing Caverns looked like.
At that time, he thought he wouldn’t get lost inside the Wailing Caverns because he knew the way…
After seeing the true situation inside Maraudon, he could only say, thankfully he didn’t foolishly go in looking for trouble.
The deeper into the cave Jesse went, the stronger and darker he felt the power of the shadows. At that moment, Greed stopped in his tracks, gazing at the faint glow of purple crystals in the distance, swallowed hard, and took a deep breath.
"I think I should drink some Shadow Protection Potion," he muttered.
"We don’t have many Shadow Protection Potions with us," Vereesa said. "And each bottle only lasts for an hour. It’s best to try to manage on our own as much as possible. Greed, how are you feeling now?"
"Well, I think I’m okay," Greed replied.
"Wait a minute," Jesse said.
Maybe because the voices made the quiet afterwards more noticeable, Jesse seemed to hear the rushing water now.
"Did you hear that?"
"Water?" asked Greed.
"Yes," Vereesa touched the cave wall and said, "Let’s follow the sound of water and see where it leads."
The group followed the sound of water, entering a narrow tunnel and arriving at a wider cavern filled with purple crystals. Greed’s expression became more uneasy upon reaching this place.
Behind them, Mosa coughed, as if she could feel the oppressive force of the shadows too.
Jesse glanced back at the Tauren, with Vereesa already walking ahead, since the sound of water was very close now.
One by one, the group passed through a crack-like crevice and suddenly found themselves in a huge cave, with a stream flowing from the middle, disappearing into the dark abyss.
Molofeel looked up towards the source of the stream and said, "We should head upwards."
"Are you sure?"
Vereesa, who had been observing below for a while, asked.
Molofeel said, "This water flow has been touched by demons. I can feel the fel magic and shadow essence inside, the smell of demons, they are from Burning Legion…"
Vereesa told Mosa about the situation. Mosa scooped up some water, drank a bit, spat it out, looked up, then nodded at Vereesa.
Suddenly, Greed lifted his head to look at the cave ceiling.
"What’s there?"
"What?" Vereesa asked.
A rustling sound could be heard. Everyone heard it this time. Jesse gripped her magic wand, Greed readied his axe, Mosa took two steps back, picked up a piece of broken stone nearby.
Suddenly, a section of the cave wall behind Mosa was forcefully broken open, a grey object pushed through the dust and cracks, its head emerging, using hook-like tentacles near its mouth to grab towards the Tauren.
Greed quickly threw the stone axe, which spun through the air and hit the insect’s hard shell on its face, splitting it open!
The giant bug shook its head and writhed for a while, then its three to four meters long body was pulled out from between the layers. Mosa pulled out Greed’s axe, and yellow pus gushed out. She swung the axe, chopping the bug into two pieces, finally feeling relieved.
Vereesa said, "We have already attracted attention in this cave, so we need to be even quieter than before."
Mosa felt guilty as she thought the bug might have been attracted by her previous cough.
Greed walked over and patted her arm, pointing upwards, "Let’s keep going, we should go up."
Tauren nodded, Jesse told Molofeel, "You lead now, go ahead invisibly. If you see anything, remember to come back and inform us."
"She’s invisible, can you sense which way she’s heading?" Vereesa asked.
"Yes," Jesse replied.
Vereesa suspiciously glanced at the succubus, who was already walking towards a higher place, blending into the shadows.
Four people followed the succubus’s footsteps, and as they went further up, the cave became narrower. After walking for about ten minutes, they had to step into the water to continue.
The water here was too cold, causing a shiver as they stepped in. Jesse even felt a bit itchy in the areas the water touched, wondering if it was due to the corrupting influence of demons.
While walking, Greed suddenly gasped, almost shouting out in surprise.
However, he quickly covered his mouth.
Molofeel, who was in front, noticed the commotion behind and stopped. Jesse looked towards the dwarf, and Greed, staring at Jesse, pointed to the ground beneath him, saying softly, "There’s something there."
Saying so, Greed bent down, felt around, and then seemed to grasp something. He pulled it up with force, revealing half of a skeleton.
"This is all that’s left."
"What’s this?" Jesse asked, "The upper body of a Centaur?"
Vereesa frowned, saying, "No, these are the bones of a Quel’dorei."
"Are you sure it’s Quel’dorai?" Jesse asked. "Not Kaldorei, or human?"
"There is a strong trace of Arcane on this," Vereesa said. "From my experience, these seem to be the remains of a mage… trust me, I have examined many leftover bones like this, even if he is not of our kin, he is a Kaldorei mage."
"A Kaldorei mage?" Jesse asked. "The elves here strongly avoid contact with Ley Line, mages cannot exist."
"Perhaps the skeletal remains of an ancient noble," Vereesa said. "Anyway, I will take a sample of the deceased, it should serve as a clue to bring back to Quel’Thalas."
"That’s good," Greed said, lifting the half skeleton. "This can fetch us some money."
"Could this be Dethmoora Darkeye?" Jesse asked.
"This is a male," Vereesa said, as she removed a tooth from the broken skull. "Our target is a woman, but it is possible there is a connection between them."
At that moment, Jesse felt Molofeel’s emotions suddenly tense, as she sent a warning to herself through Soul Link.
"Hide, there is trouble ahead," Jesse immediately said.
The two people who were cleaning up the bones immediately hid to the side, and Mosa turned into a leopard and disappeared into the water, hiding on the other side.
