    Chapter 547: The Real Windrunner

Vereesa didn’t respond. She turned slightly, raised her head, and stared directly into the eyes of the Centaur Priest, saying something.

The priest had not answered yet. The Holy Land Guardian behind him lifted the spear in his hand, muttered something in Centaur language, and Greed alertly gripped the hammer at his waist. Suddenly, the surrounding guards each raised their spears, shouting warnings or insults.

At that moment, the Centaur Priest unexpectedly spoke in a common language, saying, "No need to be nervous, outsiders."

Greed was surprised to learn that the Centaur could speak the language of another continent.

Jesse knew that they were not the first outsiders to communicate with the Centaur here, maybe even goblins had already been doing business with them.

However, the Centaur Priest didn’t know many common languages, so she switched back to Elvish after speaking, probably explaining what the guards had said earlier to Vereesa.

After speaking, Vereesa nodded and said, "They want to see our skills, to make sure we are truly warriors who can fight demons, not just a group of fake hunters and thieves."

"That’s great news, even better than I expected." Greed lightly jumped in place twice and said, "Give me a chance, Vereesa, let me smash the heads of these beastly guys."

"There’s no need for you to do it yourself," Vereesa patted the dwarf on the shoulder and said, "They mocked my surname, thinking I’m not worthy of the Windrunner name. I’ll show them what I’m capable of."

Greed asked curiously, "Do they know about your family?"

"They probably worship the wind or something related to wind deities," Jesse said, referring to something Mosa had mentioned before.

Vereesa explained, "Yes, they believe that my family name is a challenge to their silly gods, but it’s okay, soon they won’t be laughing anymore."

Jesse looked at the elf and asked, "So, are you sure you want to do this?"

Greed smiled and asked, "Are you sure, Jesse Seso? Worried that a member of the Windrunner Family will lose in a one-on-one battle?"

"Oh Jesse, you really make me sad," Vereesa said, frowning.

Jesse took a deep breath and said, "Alright, Vereesa, just be careful."

"I know," Vereesa glanced at Jesse and then turned away.

She pointed at the once arrogant Holy Land Guardian captain behind the priest and said in Elvish, "Bande, Solipos."

The priest glanced at the captain and said something in Centaur language, immediately making the guard excitedly roar and vigorously shake the spear in his hand.

The leader of the guard was the strongest among the towering Holy Land Guardians. Covered in scars, with black hair cascading over his shoulders, his nearly reddish-black skin adorned with various symbols and tattoos all over his shoulder, chest, and horse-like body – it was hard to even call it a horse, more like a bull. The Centaurs were a race keen on dueling and showing strength. Seeing a potential duel unfold, many Centaurs from the valley gathered around, forming a circle spontaneously.

The excited Centaur guard moved rhythmically, almost dancing, to the center of the arena. Many Centaurs cheered in their language, while Greed glanced at them and loudly cheered for Vereesa. Hearing the dwarfs shouting, the Centaurs cheered even louder, drawing more attention with their increasing chants.

Jesse looked at the increasing number of Centaurs and felt relieved, their enthusiasm for dueling competitions showed how important the results were to them.

He glanced at the muscular Centaur who stood a head taller than Vereesa, feeling a bit worried about the outcome.

The Centaur held a sharp spear in his hand, not a friendly wooden stick. Despite the Centaurs’ excitement, this duel was dangerous and could end with serious injuries.

However, Vereesa Windrunner observed the Centaur from afar, then casually tossed aside her bow and two daggers.

This action was clearly provocative, causing a stir among the Centaurs. They began to howl and roar, raising hooves and weapons in anticipation.

Jesse noticed the priest’s calm reaction. She glanced at the Centaur guard, whose response was not as excited as the others. At least he didn’t act rashly and drop his spear.

Jesse glanced at Greed beside him. The dwarf was more enthusiastic, shouting Vereesa’s name loudly. Mosa, nearby, couldn’t decide if he should wag his lion or bull-like tail, watching the situation intently.

The Centaur guard pounded his chest and raised his spear, the surrounding howls turning into a unified chant of "roar, roar, roar." Even Greed was surprised and fell silent.

Vereesa stood her ground, taking a step back slightly. The Centaur guard tensed his muscles all over his body.

On the other side, suddenly, the hooves of two horses kicked up a big cloud of dust as a guard raised his spear high, like a wild knight charging forward. The guard was big in size with long strides, and in just a few steps, he charged toward the elf.

Vereesa agilely dodged to the side, avoiding the spear tip and leaping up, then swiftly kicked the Centaur in the back of the neck!

This move was incredibly fast, almost inhuman. Vereesa was certainly not human, and the Centaur was caught off guard. After being kicked, he stumbled forward and crashed into the crowd, falling to the ground, bringing silence to the scene.

Vereesa landed gracefully, glancing back disdainfully at the scattered group of Centaurs. The guard captain lay there motionless, unable to stand up again.

    He was dead.

Even from this distance, Jesse could see that the Centaur guard’s head was twisted at an unnatural angle, blood covering his mouth and nose. His four dark legs were elevated in a stiff, rigid posture, and he even twitched slightly.

"Is it over? But… nothing will go wrong, right?" Greed scanned the shocked Centaur civilians and soldiers, whispering softly.

"I don’t know," Jesse said, his hand already on the hilt of his sword.

Not only Jesse and the Centaurs were shocked, but at the moment Vereesa kicked the Centaur to death, Jesse even sensed Molofeel’s emotions twitching through the Soul Link.

She didn’t know if she was amazed by Vereesa’s strength or wary of Centaur possibly attacking suddenly.

However, the disturbance they were worried about never came. After a while of quiet, Jesse noticed the Centaur priestess looking up towards the high ground.

In the direction she was looking, on the cliff, stood a Centaur figure. From this distance, Jesse couldn’t determine his size, but he was at least much taller than the surrounding Centaur, muscular like a dark statue.

Is that the leader of the Maraudine?

While Jesse was still looking at the Centaur, the priestess had come to the center of the area.

"Windrunner." She pronounced this name in Elvish, then said something else to Vereesa.

Vereesa nodded, gestured lightly with her finger, and then walked towards the entrance of the valley. The observing Centaur automatically made way for her, the whole valley fell into a fearful silence.

Jesse and Greed looked at each other, quickly picked up Vereesa’s bow and knife, and followed along with Mosa in a fast walk.
