The door creaked open with a groaning sound.
The vast fourth level was divided into numerous small compartments by rows of screens.
The four of them entered cautiously.
“This…” Upon seeing a small room separated by a screen, Wang Kun was so shocked that he was speechless.
Inside the room, there was only a wooden tub, and within it sat a figure. The person’s limbs were shackled, their arms pulled up, and their body was emaciated. If it weren’t for the faint breath, the four of them would have almost thought the person was dead.
Approaching the tub, they realized that it was not filled with water, but with blood.
At this moment, Ye Wushuang stepped forward and placed his hand on the man’s chest.
“The heart meridian is almost destroyed; he won’t live long…” he said somberly.
The four continued to look through the other small rooms separated by screens, only to see more scenes of despair: some contained barely alive warriors chained up, while others held dissected corpses… It was a macabre sight, akin to a slaughterhouse.
Deeper inside, the screens gave way to rows of pitch-black iron boxes, each about ten feet in length, width, and height, all sealed with spirit arrays.
Ye Wushuang began to attempt to break these arrays once more.
*Crack, crack, crack…*
The sound of shattering echoed as one of the iron boxes opened. The outer layer of the dark cage fell away, revealing an iron lattice cage inside.
Within the cage, there were ten living people, their eyes filled with fear and devoid of any luster, staring at the four outsiders.
Wang Kun stepped forward and asked, “Who are you people?”
The ten individuals stood there like statues, their eyes hollow as they stared at the four, but they did not respond.
“Did Wang Jianmu imprison you here?”
At the mention of Wang Jianmu’s name, the ten people all knelt down in unison, trembling with fear.
Wang Kun was taken aback. How terrified they must be of Wang Jianmu, to react this way just at the sound of his name.
He continued, “Don’t be afraid… The four of us are not from Tianji Mansion. We are from the Qingyun Empire!”
The ten people’s bodies shook even more violently, but still, none dared to stand up.
“Don’t be afraid… We truly are not from Tianji Mansion,” Wang Kun said helplessly.
After a long while, a timid voice finally spoke up, “Are you here to save us?”
“Fourteen, don’t speak out of turn!”
A man suddenly turned to the little girl who had spoken and scolded her sharply. He then quickly looked at Wang Kun, kowtowing and pleading, “My lord, my lord, Fourteen doesn’t know any better. Please don’t blame her. We will not run away, we swear!”
Seeing this, Ye Wushuang’s heart tightened. He stepped forward, squatted down, and looked at the little girl, asking gently, “Don’t be afraid. Do you want to leave this place?”
The little girl, who looked to be around four or five years old, glanced at the man beside her and then at Ye Wushuang. In a childish voice, she replied, “Yes…”
“Rest assured, we are not the ones who imprisoned you. We are here to save you,” Ye Wushuang said, reaching out to pick up the little girl.
The other nine people remained prostrate on the ground, not daring to breathe heavily, let alone speak.
Ye Wushuang smiled and asked, “Can you tell me why you want to get out?”
The little girl hesitated and said, “Because it’s so dark here. We only see light when we eat. And… many brothers and sisters have been taken away and never came back…”
“Every day, those people check our bodies, make us eat a lot of things, and then draw blood from us. They scold and hit us all the time. My mother was beaten to death by them…”
“Fourteen, what are you talking about!” the man who had spoken earlier scolded again. “Don’t talk nonsense. It’s Lord Wang who gives us the chance to live. Don’t talk nonsense!”
Ye Wushuang looked at the man, not with anger, but with a chill in his heart.
What kind of experiences had they gone through to be like this?
They had introduced themselves and said they were not from Tianji Mansion, but these people clearly did not believe them. This meant that before, Tianji Mansion must have used similar methods to test if they had any intention of escaping.
Or perhaps… the ruthless means of Tianji Mansion had already completely shattered any hope of escape in these people!
“I’m not talking nonsense…” Little Fourteen said tearfully. “They were very mean. They killed my mother, skinned her, and took out her brain to show us…”
Upon hearing this, Wang Kun, Qing Shihua, and Qing Shiyu all felt a pang of horror in their hearts.
