Chapter 91: Zakavido, You Did Great!
After handing over the shopping list and a big bag of Abyssal Crystal to Old Harper, Lolth asked him to take Ann and Kanor to the market at Port of Vancouver to look around. The extra money would allow the three of them to buy something they wanted, considering it as payment for their errand.
Lolth took Isabella and headed straight to the Ducal Residence where the former Chima Duke had resided, which was now Zakavido’s home. The Ducal Residence was located in the northwest corner of the city, occupying about one-fifth or one-sixth of the entire area of Port of Vancouver — in fact, including the estates outside the city, it was even larger.
The whole western half of Port of Vancouver revolved around the Duke’s residence. Government offices, police stations, and other institutions were built nearby, with most of the surrounding shops and residential buildings originally serving the many servants under the Ducal Residence. When the Duke of Chima hurriedly fled, these places were left vacant and were naturally taken over by Zakavido.
Led by the evil ghost knight, Lolth and Isabella hurried through the western city without rest, entering the open gates of the Ducal Residence. They passed through a small front yard divided by covered corridors and adorned with bushes, styled with hints of the Republic of Seychelles, and reached the guest reception room.
Zakavido was seated in a chair, looking somewhat restless. Just as the evil spirit had said, from a distance, it was clear to see that the powerful Abyssal Sovereign, Death Knight, was looking very exhausted now. Under the knight’s helmet, where there should have been two blazing orange flames of the soul, now they were very dim, only two small flames remaining, just like the lowest power setting of a household gas stove.
“Looks like quite a tricky situation,” Lolth said, watching Zakavido’s appearance with a sigh.
Upon seeing Lolth from afar, Zakavido immediately stood up from his chair. “Lord Lolth, you’ve come–you must help me!”
Seeing how the other person viewed her as a savior, although she would definitely help, Lolth felt the need to correct this mistaken belief. She cleared her throat softly. “Ahem, Lord Zakavido, I’m just a plain interrogator, not a plague warlock or doctor who specializes in disease. You can’t expect too much from me on this matter!”
“Oh no, Lord Lolth, you are so wise and knowledgeable about the different races of the continent. But within the Demon Army, it is widely believed that…”
“Wait a minute,” Lolth interrupted, “who told you that? How did it become widely believed?”
When Lolth heard Zakavido’s words, she suddenly felt uneasy about her reputation. Shouldn’t her role be just that of a minor and unimportant person who slacks off? Even if she had achieved something in the battle in the west this time, the most she could do was gather information through interrogation. Why had her reputation turned out this way?
“It seems like this is the Demon King’s evaluation of you,” Zakavido said, scratching his head, “but I don’t know where this rumor originated from.”
Hearing the words “Demon King,” Lolth stopped trying to argue… no, she stopped trying to correct it. After all, the words of the Demon King carried a lot of weight.
“Alright, let’s not waste time with pleasantries, Zakavido… What’s the deal with the epidemic?” Lolth steered the conversation back to serious matters.
“Our Second Legion has been stationed in the Port of Vancouver for about half a month now,” Zakavido explained. “The first week was fine, but starting last week, my undead noticed something strange. Some residents started showing symptoms like vomiting, nausea, and fatigue for unknown reasons… At first, it was just a few people, but in the past few days, the number has been increasing!”
“I checked the food that the humans eat, though it tastes disgusting to me, it was my initial suspect — but His Excellency Doyle warned me before I came that humans have very different eating habits from us, so I asked a few humans, and they told me that it’s their daily food…”
“When I asked them why they were vomiting, they didn’t tell me, but… I can’t shake the feeling that these humans are hiding something! I suspect that there might be a human warlock lurking in this city, plotting something… But maybe I’m just being paranoid! Anyway, Lord Lolth, I must ask for your help once again. I will definitely show my gratitude after this is done!”
Listening to Zakavido, Lolth felt like she was taking on some kind of side quest, as if an exclamation mark would pop up above his head at any moment. However, she had to accept it. The reward was secondary; the main reason being she couldn’t allow the disease to spread unchecked.
When working on researching new types of crops, she had accidentally created some new Magic Potion ingredients. Many of them had effects similar to antibiotics from past lives, along with the common knowledge about diseases from the past.
Even though Zakavido believed in untrue rumors, she was not completely unfamiliar with preventing and treating infectious diseases. At least Lolth thought that her expertise in this area was surely stronger than most of the demon race.
“Alright, I will go visit those patients now,” she said with a nod, looking somewhat excited as she walked toward the door.
“Thank you so much… Let me take you there right away!” Zakavido blew a strange whistle with his skull that leaked air, summoning two Skeleton Warhorses.
“I assume your knight follower knows how to ride… Let her lead you to follow me, and I will take you to the areas with the most concentrated outbreaks of the disease!”
Zakavido was referring to Isabella, who had been silent earlier behind Lolth.
“Um… this…” Lolth hesitated, originally wanting to refuse, as she and Isabella were in a somewhat delicate situation. Riding together on a Skeleton Warhorse would involve physical contact…
However, it was obvious that Zakavido, being an Abyss Undead, was not very sensitive. He completely didn’t notice Lolth’s embarrassment at the moment.
But just as Lolth was hesitating, Isabella spoke up first. “No problem, I can ride… as long as this thing behaves similar to a horse.” Her voice was cold and steady; in front of Zakavido, she had turned back into “Ryman Ice” from the Northman Knight Order.
“Great, this horse is just like your human warhorse, just a bit colder. We shouldn’t delay, Lord Lolth, let’s go!” Zakavido climbed onto the Skeleton Warhorse and looked at the two people.
Acting casual, Isabella mounted her warhorse, leaving half a body space in front for Lolth. She even reached out her hand to Lolth!
