Chapter 81: Otherworld Camping Adventure!
Happy Dog Car continued towards the Port of Vancouver from Hillenbrand Town. The journey was quite far – at their current speed, it would take almost two days to reach the destination.
The surroundings were becoming increasingly desolate. Everyone got a taste of the most common sights in Vera Plain: plains covered in wild grass, slow-flowing rivers, occasional low hills, sparse patches of coniferous forests, and wandering monsters, with very few signs of human presence.
Even though they were already in Qinma Principality territory, Vera Plain was still considered quite remote from the western side of the continent. It served more as a buffer zone, an interface between elves, dwarfs, and the Republic of Seychelles.
The monsters had no intention of attacking Lolth and her companions. The overwhelming presence of the powerful Dadaka Superlative Level monsters served as a strong deterrent against the weaker ones.
Old Harper, who knew the central area of Qinma Principality well, rubbed his chin as he looked out the window at the passing scenery.
“At this speed, I’m afraid we won’t make it to the nearest town or village before nightfall…” the old-fashioned adventurer said worriedly.
By now, several people had already had two meals in the car, and it was already a leisurely afternoon past noon. No gathering place for humans meant no walls, guards, or patrols. In his adventuring experience and common sense, this was still very dangerous.
Most monsters were far better adapted to the night environment compared to humans and other intelligent races on the continent. In the wilderness, the monsters would have a natural home advantage in battles.
“Ah, it’s okay, I brought a super large tent and enough sleeping bags,” Lolth said when she heard Old Harper’s concern. “We’ll just find a flat place to camp at night.”
“No, Lord Lolth, I am worried about the monsters…”
Lolth glanced at the team’s configuration: a sealed legendary-level Grand Knight, an ex-epic warrior, and a cart pulled by a Superlative Level magical beast. Even though she wasn’t good at direct combat, she still had some fighting ability. This team was not weak.
Plus, her camping equipment had all been blessed!
“Are there large numbers of epic-level monsters or groups of legendary-level monsters on Vera Plain?” Lolth asked cautiously. “If so, we need to be careful.”
When Old Harper heard the adjectives “large numbers” and “groups” connected with “epic” and “legendary” levels, he found it difficult to process. Although there were rumors of powerful monsters appearing on Vera Plain…
The lord’s idea was beyond expectations! Was this the nature of an Abyssal Demon?
Old Harper opened his mouth to speak but ultimately remained silent.
“That’s alright.”
And so, the group continued their journey until dark. As the sun set, they found a relatively flat and sheltered spot on the leeward slope of a small hill to set up camp for the night.
Dadaka stopped walking, removed the reins from around his neck with his dog-like paws, parked the cart near the hill, and joined the others.
Lolth retrieved a lightweight yet huge tent from her backpack, skillfully hammered in tent pegs, laid out a moisture-proof mat, assembled the frame, and quickly set up a tent large enough for everyone.
Compared to the common yurts used by nomads in this world or the pointed cloth and leather tents used by Orcs, Lolth’s tent appeared quite unique to the group.
When folded, it was barely over a meter long, but when set up, it was incredibly spacious. Despite being lightweight and smooth to the touch, it proved surprisingly sturdy and warm. The sleeping bags shared these remarkable properties.
Moreover, Lolth brought out a grill and a magic-powered stove, lit a fire, and produced pre-prepared ingredients from her backpack: dehydrated vegetables, air-dried cured meat, compressed instant noodle cakes, canned meat, and rice porridge.
Even though there were leftovers in the bento box, camping just felt right with instant food.
“What a marvelous tent! If we had equipment like this during our adventures back then, the captain wouldn’t have gotten stuck on that snowy mountain…”
Old Harper’s expression turned thoughtful and nostalgic.
“Oh, Uncle Harper, what happened to your captain?” Lolth asked as she began heating canned food and cooking instant noodles in separate pots of boiling water.
“Nothing too serious – he just got chilled legs and developed health issues from spending a night in a leaky tent without proper covers. Had to retire early and become a guard instead.”
“…That’s such a shame.” Lolth had initially thought from Harper’s tone that the captain had perished from exposure or starvation.
Ann and Kanor weren’t surprised by these strange items anymore. Kano, who dreamed of becoming a chef, showed renewed interest in Lolth’s cooking equipment and canned goods.
But Isabella was utterly shocked by the existence of this equipment set. As a knight order leader, she understood perfectly what such equipment meant for a legion!
Portable, reliable, sturdy temporary camps with almost no restrictions, reusable heating equipment, and high-calorie, easily stored, convenient food for cooking – if such equipment had been given to the Northman Knight Order back then, she and her father might have easily reached the capital of the Republic of Seychelles!
Was this truly an Abyssal Demon? No, after her time together with Lolth and her experience at the Demon King Castle, Isabella had some insight. This succubus was far more special compared to other demon races.
“Ingredients with magic potion effects, enchanted building tools, powerful Space Magic Array… These could greatly enhance any army legion’s marching efficiency and expedition capability…” Isabella mused as she watched Lolth prepare the instant noodles, rinsing them in cold water before topping them with a fried egg and cheese crumbs.
What exactly was this succubus’s background? Setting aside her hatred and fear, momentarily forgetting her regret and unwillingness, Isabella examined the succubus with the most objective perspective possible. Though she had once considered informing the Holy Alliance about this succubus, she now realized she couldn’t see through her at all.
How many secrets did she still hide?
“Isabella, could you help me open a can?”
The succubus’s voice interrupted her thoughts.
“Yes, Master Lolth.”
Isabella took the heavy, slightly warm metal can. Though she had never seen one before, she quickly understood how to open it. She pulled the ring tab, and the aroma of meat wafted to her nostrils.
“Cursed succubus, I must uncover your true identity… Your skills, one day, I will definitely make them my own!” Isabella thought as she swallowed reflexively.
