Chapter 78: Getting Ready to Leave!
The landlady’s list of candidates was actually quite short—just three names in total.
“Harper Dolun… Is he the mayor?” Lolth’s voice faltered slightly as she heard the first name.
In terms of administrative hierarchy, besides Lolth herself, the mayor of Hillenbrand Town held the highest position. Harper Dolun, who had risen from humble beginnings, had become mayor by leveraging his credentials as an adventurer. He was practical and compassionate toward the residents, unlike the noble officials, and was deeply loved by everyone.
Lolth felt hesitant. “Is it really okay to take him out? There must be someone here in Hillenbrand Town to maintain daily order, right?”. She wasn’t sure about removing the mayor from his position—it didn’t seem quite right.
“Oh, it’s fine,” the landlady reassured her, waving her hand. “Although he’s a good person, his mayoral duties are just fixing fences and dealing with magical beasts. And… he used to be an adventurer.”
Lolth raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “Oh, oh, oh, a retired adventurer becoming a mayor in a remote small town?” She took another sip of the mushroom soup, her expression revealing understanding. “He used to be very strong, right?”
“Not exactly,” the landlady replied with a smirk. “He’s just a formal rank, but he’s been to many cities in the Qinma Principality and the Lauren Duchy. He knows the ins and outs of things, and,” the landlady’s smile turned more playful, “this guy has some… ‘connections.’ He can make the Lord’s journey a little smoother.”
“Okay, I’ll go visit the mayor later,” Lolth nodded again as she looked at the landlady speaking, then turned to the second person, “Ann… Eh?”
She glanced at the handsome young man next to her, who was sipping from a celadon wine glass. When he heard Lolth mention her name, he also looked at the succubus, confusion reflected in his brown eyes.
Then, Ann looked at the landlady.
“Hey… Why am I being included in this?”
Ann grumbled dissatisfiedly.
Lolth couldn’t understand why this young man, who seemed to be drunk all day and looked like a wanderer, was being recommended.
The landlady didn’t seem like someone helping a friend find a job—after all, this wasn’t an easy task.
There was still a possibility of being attacked.
Even without being attacked, working for the demon race… In those cities not as friendly as Hillenbrand, one would surely face criticism and accusations.
A thin and weak young boy, who didn’t seem to be from the local area, puzzled Lolth about why she needed to bring him along.
Then the landlady spoke up.
“This lad used to be an epic-level warrior — well, to be precise, a swordsman… I don’t really understand the distinctions between these professions,” the landlady confidently spilled the beans about Ann’s background, “Even though he’s now disabled, unable to use skills, he’s still very strong.”
Listening to the landlady’s words, Lolth looked at the young boy, slightly surprised.
“This lad is epic-level… Wait, in the past?”
She had always faintly felt that in towns like Hillenbrand Town which seemed calm and remote, they were more likely to hide a master.
But she had been focusing on the mayor before.
Unexpectedly, it turned out to be the young Ann whom she had eaten with.
The young outsider who looked so young turned out to be an epic-level swordsman!
It’s been scrapped!
This information is a bit too much.
When Ann heard the landlady say this, he didn’t argue anymore, just sighed softly.
“It’s a swordsman, not a swordsman… However, I won’t do anything for the demon race.”
Although Ann looks down and out, he is still proud at heart.
Even though in the past few days, through Maider’s description and what he had seen, he did realize the uniqueness of this demon race, Ann still refused to follow them.
Lolth studied the young man quietly, realizing it wasn’t wise to push the matter further.
Although he appeared to be the typical protagonist, she couldn’t help but feel a curiosity to understand him better.
But then again, this was the reality of the continent—stronger individuals often harbored more hostility towards the demon race.
Lolth wasn’t the type to force someone into changing their perspective or opinion. If they were unwilling, she wouldn’t waste her energy on them.
Just as she was about to dismiss the situation, the landlady leaned toward Ann and whispered something in his ear.
The change was immediate—his pupils briefly contracted, a flicker of surprise crossed his handsome face, and then, slowly, it shifted into a mixture of comprehension and disbelief.
“Are you saying… really?”
Ann looked at the landlady and asked seriously.
“Have I lied to you… well, quite a few times, but before it was all in jest, I won’t lie to you about something like this.”
The landlady responded so seriously.
Lolth looked at the two of them, not knowing what had happened between them.
Later, Lolth noticed Ann looking at her.
“I will go with you.”
Ann said this, then jumped off the chair in front of the bar counter, picked up the box by his feet, and walked out of the tavern’s big door.
“Is that all settled?”
Lolth was a bit puzzled.
However, having a legendary fighter willing to join was a good thing.
She looked at the last person on the list.
“Kanor Eral Fuen.”
“This is a bit unexpected.”
Lolth looked up at the landlady helplessly.
The landlady smiled shyly and said, “I have a little selfishness… I want the child to see places outside of Hillenbrand Town.”
“I don’t have many chances to take her out… and the child really likes you. So even though Miss Lolth has important things to do, I still hope you will take the child with you – of course, if Miss Lolth wants to say no, that’s okay too.”
“No, since you put it that way, it’s fine to bring her along,” Lolth thought for a moment, Kanor is indeed a very clever child, “I will take care of her… besides, we have the former adventurer mayor and Ann with us, and I plan to bring Isabella along too.”
“That would be wonderful.”
The landlady nodded with a smile.
“But I have a question… is she really the landlady’s daughter, niece, or sister?”
Lolth asked curiously.
Even though Auntie had introduced Kanor as the landlady’s child before, Lolth didn’t understand Kano’s complex background.
“Oh, Lord Lolth didn’t know?” the landlady looked surprised, “this child… was adopted by me.”
After that, the landlady briefly introduced Kanor’s background.
This greatly moved Lolth.
“So it’s like this… But looking at her strong appearance, it’s hard to tell.”
Lolth sighed and stood up from the chair.
“Don’t worry, landlady, I will take good care of Kanor!”
