Chapter 66: Another Round of Making Up Intelligence!
In the reception room of the torture tower, Doyle sat on a chair crafted from abyssal fallen vines, adorned with magical beast bones. She placed the space magic bag solemnly on the table before her.
“So, let me get straight to the point, Lord Lolth,” she began, opening the seal on her magic bag and nudging it toward Lolth, who sat opposite her. “The Demon King sent me this time primarily to approve the funding for the new ‘torture facilities’ you requested.”
Lolth peeked inside the bag, and her eyes widened as she saw it filled to the brim with top-grade Abyssal Crystals.
At first, the sight made her feel a bit dizzy.
But soon, a wave of happiness washed over her.
She had initially expected the Demon King to trim the budget, as usual. But now, seeing that her inflated numbers had been fully accepted, she couldn’t help but feel a sense of triumph.
Along with her joy, a tinge of regret crept in.
If only she had known that her ‘budget’ would be approved in full, she thought, she would have been bolder when submitting the numbers.
She had planned to start construction the following day, but now it felt as though someone had handed her a pillow while she was already dozing off.
“Yay, Her Excellency Doyle, thank you so much for coming,” Lolth said, her gaze softening. “Tonight, you must stay and try the new dish I’ve learned!”
Upon hearing this, Doyle’s expression changed drastically.
“Never mind, Lord Lolth. I have other tasks to attend to,” Doyle replied quickly, seeking a polite way to decline. “The Demon King gave me multiple tasks, not just for you. She instructed me to prioritize coming to your place, but there are other matters I must inform you of.”
As an Abyssal Demon, Lolth had little appreciation for cooking, especially not for Doyle’s culinary efforts. She didn’t even use ore in her dishes. The food was soft-textured, bland, and either lukewarm or slightly cold—difficult to swallow at best.
Lolth’s taste buds, though considered mild by Abyssal standards, were accustomed to more… exotic fare, like death demon flowers. But Doyle’s food? It was dreadful.
Lolth, however, was aware that her cooking never aligned with the demon race’s preferences, so when Doyle declined her invitation, she simply nodded.
“Alright, what else did the Demon King instruct you about?” she asked.
With a quick motion, Doyle reached into her magic bag and pulled out two scrolls of parchment.
The sight of parchment made Lolth instinctively feel a headache coming on, and what Doyle said next only confirmed her suspicions.
“This was confiscated by Lord Achilles during a cleanup of a battlefield from a noble mansion in the Republic of Seychelles,” Doyle explained. “It’s written that the Holy Alliance plans to launch a counterattack in about a month, and the main initiator seems to be the Ryman Empire.”
“However,” Doyle continued, “this letter doesn’t specify the details of the counterattack.”
“Because Lord Lolth previously captured the leader of the Ryman Northman Knight Order, she’s spent some time in the Interrogation Department. The Demon King thought maybe the girl might know something.” Doyle handed over the parchment to Lolth. “So, please ask her if she knows anything—though, of course, it’s fine if she doesn’t.”
Lolth couldn’t help but feel that the Demon King was being unreasonable.
After the collapse of the western front, were they really depending on a prisoner’s information to make decisions about the Holy Alliance’s plans? It felt as though the Demon King had unrealistic expectations based on past successes.
Every gift from fate, Lolth thought, not only carries a hidden price but often multiplies tenfold or even thirteenfold.
The special treatment she had received before, along with the large sum of Abyssal Crystals in her hands, all came at a cost.
The cost was that her laid-back life had been seriously disrupted.
After two years of doing nothing, here she was, with another job less than a month later. Being lazy every day had already grown exhausting—how could she possibly find the time and energy to work for the Demon Army?
Hearing Doyle say, “It’s okay if you can’t ask questions,” Lolth sighed, her thoughts drifting to the Demon King’s conscience, before she began to prepare a polite refusal.
But then, she suddenly realized…
If she refused this time, it would be perfectly understandable—it was a normal reaction. But that would also mean the Demon King’s reliance on the Interrogation Department would remain unchanged.
Lolth needed to seize this opportunity to make the Demon King realize the mistake of underestimating the “Interrogation Department.” Acting slowly was not an option.
It would only result in losing the Demon King’s trust once and for all.
Since they had enough funds to spend, owning territory could provide a new source of income. For now, Lolth decided to forgo the money.
With this in mind, Lolth took the parchment scroll from Doyle’s hand.
“Don’t worry, Her Excellency Doyle. Just wait for my good news,” she said confidently. “Isabella is completely under my control now!”
“Moreover, the Holy Alliance hasn’t given up on her. Isabella has also received that letter!”
“So, I’m sure I can get something out of her.”
As Lolth spoke with conviction, Doyle nodded.
“Then I will await your good news. I’ll visit Her Excellency Shelldor, Majimaji, and Zakavido in their territories and should be back in about half a month. Master Lolth, do we have enough time before then?”
“That’s enough,” Lolth waved her hand dismissively. “Actually, one week at most will be enough. If everything goes quickly, I might even have an answer tonight!”
Most likely, she would have to fabricate some information. How long it took would depend on when she could come up with a believable false report.
Lolth was confident that she could manage it.
Doyle Candice nodded, then added, “Indeed, Master Lolth… There is one last thing, though it wasn’t instructed by the Demon King. This afternoon, I met Lady Kululu outside the town. She asked me to tell Lord Lolth that she will arrive today—counting the time, she should already be in town.”
As she spoke, Doyle scratched her head sheepishly.
“I was originally going to come together with her, but Lady Kululu insisted on taking the main road. She even advised me to do the same. To save time, I didn’t follow her suggestion, but now it seems Lady Kululu really knows how to plan ahead!”
