Chapter 65: Unexpected Visitor!
Lolth knew very well that her Space Magic Array would be difficult to break through with brute force, due to its intricate and interconnected nature.
While individual magic arrays may not be strong on their own and serve simple functions, when connected in a circle, they are as powerful as bundled chopsticks.
If an ordinary spellcaster tried to unravel it, Lolth wouldn’t be too concerned. However, being able to break it open through forceful means indicated at least a legendary level of strength.
From the feedback she received before the magic array shattered, Lolth understood that the force behind it was beyond what an ordinary legend could achieve.
It was definitely the power of a Legend Upper Level!
Perhaps even… something above the legendary level—an unknown strength far beyond what the world had ever encountered.
But, no, that was unlikely.
Such powerful individuals wouldn’t waste their time dismantling magic arrays in a small town like this.
After a moment of nervousness, Lolth hesitated, then abandoned the idea of running.
Regardless, she decided to first see who the visitor was before making any decision.
Once she knew more, it wouldn’t be too late to flee.
With this in mind, Lolth cleared her throat and took out the large horn once again.
“Alright, friends,” she announced, “after eating and drinking your fill, hurry back home! I have something to do. Everyone, eat well, drink well, rest well—tomorrow we begin recruiting for the first batch of job positions!”
With that, she used magic to make the people in the square disappear.
It wasn’t that she was intentionally keeping secrets from the residents, but telling unarmed civilians, who had no means to defend themselves, would only cause unnecessary panic.
Plus, after a moment’s thought, Lolth realized that the ones likely pursuing her now were members of the Holy Alliance.
The entire demon race in Hillenbrand Town consisted of just Lolth. Even if intimidating figures like the Emperor of the Church of Light, Grand Marshal Ryman, Chief Sword Master Seychelles, an elf priest, or the Dwarf King wielding a Divine Artifact were to arrive, she could simply flee, and they would have no target left to pursue.
On the other hand, the residents of Hillenbrand Town had already been liberated, so what did they have to fear?
Realizing this, Lolth decided it wasn’t necessary to notify the people of Hillenbrand.
Using short-distance teleportation, Lolth quickly arrived near the site of the destroyed magic array.
This magic array, the one closest to the torture tower, lay just on the other side of the gentle slope to the northeast.
It was clear now: the intruder had come specifically for the torture tower.
Lolth’s senses sharpened as she began to search for the culprit.
The attack had clearly been intended to intimidate. When Lolth reached the scene, the dust from the destruction had yet to fully settle.
The magic array was destroyed, and in its place was a deep pit where smooth ground had once been.
In the center of the pit, amidst the swirling dust, Lolth noticed a faint red light.
Using her Magic Perception, she sensed that the intruder had activated a spell barrier as well.
But…
Why did the magic within this barrier feel so much like abyss magic, infused with an evil, chaotic aura?
Upon closer inspection, Lolth quickly recognized the figure inside the magical barrier as someone familiar—likely a demon. This realization triggered a sense of déjà vu, and she began to suspect that there had been some sort of misunderstanding.
It seemed as though there was no immediate need for her to flee after all.
As the smoke began to clear, a small, round, reddish, semi-transparent magical barrier shield came into view. Inside the shield stood a familiar figure from the abyss—Doyle Candice.
The moment their eyes met, both Lolth and Doyle found themselves in an awkward silence.
“Um… Your Excellency Lolthlinda, I’ve come to deliver a message to the Demon King,” Doyle spoke up first, attempting to break the tension.
Lolth, after a brief moment of processing, replied with a nod. “Ah, I see!”
Doyle flapped her small wings in slight embarrassment, rubbing her hands together as she continued, “Um, I got trapped by a magic spell as soon as I arrived here, so I thought I was under attack and reacted instinctively…”
Doyle’s gaze flickered toward Lolth, guilt evident in her eyes.
Seeing Doyle, however, stirred a similar feeling of guilt in Lolth. She cleared her throat and said, “These Space Magic Arrays were set up by me, well, you know… there are still remnants of the Holy Alliance forces on the western front that haven’t been cleared yet…”
Doyle, with a quick understanding, nodded vigorously. “I see, I see,” she said, before her expression shifted to one of curiosity. “But how did Lord Lolth create such intricate and powerful Space Magic Arrays?”
Lolth, ever confident in her response, answered immediately, “They were generated by an ancient magic device that I unearthed from the ruins.”
Doyle’s eyes widened in sudden realization. “Ah, that’s it,” she exclaimed, “It’s the same magic device that you used when renovating the Interrogation Department, right!”
This exchange highlighted the complex nature of magical constructs, particularly those derived from ancient relics. Magic arrays, such as the Space Magic Arrays Lolth had deployed, often require sophisticated devices or artifacts, especially when they possess the kind of potency seen here.
The ancient magic device mentioned is likely a relic of forgotten arcane knowledge, potentially containing a variety of forgotten spells or enchantments capable of creating such intricate and powerful systems. These devices, depending on their origin and construction, may also interact with the environment in unique ways, sometimes unleashing effects unintended by the user.
It’s worth noting that the design and implementation of such arrays are not only a testament to magical prowess but also reflect an understanding of long-lost magical principles that can influence modern spellcasting.
“Yes, that’s it. So, Her Excellency Doyle doesn’t need to worry too much. I’ll just use my magic device to fix the magic array—no big loss,” Lolth said with a smile. She then glanced at Doyle and casually asked, “But, just now, I felt… well, at least a strike at the legend level. How did Her Excellency Doyle manage to do that?”
This little devil, Doyle, must be at the Superlative Level, right? Lolth thought. Even if she were using secret techniques that burn the soul and life force, it should be impossible to unleash a blow with the power of the Legend Upper Level!
“Ah, it’s the Demon King who’s worried about my safety,” Doyle replied, her red magic barrier vanishing to reveal her innocent smile. “He granted me a scroll that can unleash an attack spell and shield comparable to the legendary tier. I got too nervous and accidentally used it!”
“Oh, I see! Haha! Her Excellency Doyle is really favored by the Demon King!” Lolth said with a grin. She exchanged a glance with Doyle, and both of them burst into laughter.
“Oh no, it’s Lord Lolth who is favored! The Demon King really cares about you!” Doyle replied with a playful tone, and the two shared another chuckle.
After a brief moment, Lolth changed the subject. “Speaking of the Demon King… is there something specific that brings Her Excellency Doyle here this time?”
Doyle nodded, reaching into a magic bag filled with space magic. “Of course, Master Lolth! This time, I have great news for you!”
“That’s wonderful,” Lolth responded, knowing that despite Doyle’s playful nature, she wouldn’t lie about something like this. “Her Excellency Doyle, shall we go to the torture tower for a chat together?”
Lolth made a gesture of invitation, and Doyle, with no reason to refuse, nodded and followed her toward the torture tower.
However, as they left, Lolth didn’t notice something else: at the hole blasted open by Doyle Candice’s Space Magic Array, a figure quietly sneaked inside.
