Chapter 62: Fishing in Otherworld, Never Return Empty-handed!
A single silver coin, in terms of purchasing power in the Republic of Seychelles, roughly covers half a month’s daily expenses for an average family.
In a remote town like Hillenbrand, it holds even more weight.
One silver coin per person was more than enough to excite the five stonemasons and young people with carving skills. After all, servants working for noble lords or knights often earned only five or six silver coins a month!
And this was just the advance payment!
Lolth’s gesture had undoubtedly improved the residents’ impression of her.
Additionally, everyone was excited about the potential future job positions she had mentioned earlier.
For Lolth, however, her work in town was almost done for the day.
Recruiting more people for the jobs could wait.
After all, she had already spoken a lot with the horn in hand and arranged for the carving of a stone tablet, which was quite a bit of work!
The specifics of building the new projects could be addressed tomorrow.
Besides, the funds from the Demon King’s side hadn’t arrived yet.
She couldn’t use her own savings to cover everything, could she?
“Tina, go back to the Demon Tower and continue with your daily tasks. When you’re done, come to the square and guide the carving of the law symbols and the erecting of the stone tablet.”
“As for you, Isabella… please move some of the stones and wood from the warehouse, but not too much. Leave half behind and place the rest in the open space to the south of the town.”
After assigning tasks to two people, Lolth pulled out the “Hillenbrand Town Decree”—a document she had casually written while waiting for the magic circle to activate yesterday—and tossed it to one of the five responsible individuals who had just claimed to be literate.
The text wasn’t long. Excluding sections about taxes, construction, and the lord’s responsibilities that could be regulated through decree, it also covered some aspects of land management. It was a bit more advanced than the primitive, strict laws commonly found across the mainland. Considering the era and the acceptance of the current residents, the first rule was simple: “Killers pay with their lives; injurers go to jail; fighters also go to jail.”
Once today’s tasks were arranged, Lolth turned her attention to the people eagerly awaiting the promised reward of a silver coin.
“Once the Hillenbrand decree stone tablet is erected, there will also be several bulletin boards nearby where all new policies will be posted. When the lord’s mansion starts recruiting staff, it will be announced in advance! Those who meet the requirements, make sure to sign up!”
With that, Lolth prepared to exercise her divine right to slack off.
“Alright, everyone can go now!”
Though the people didn’t leave immediately, and Isabella and Tina remained in place, Lolth disappeared the moment she finished speaking.
She had already appeared by the river outside the town.
Today, she planned to catch some fresh fish for a change of pace.
As an expert in the art of “relaxing,” how could she not be skilled at fishing?
Fishing, a leisurely activity that also helped pass the time, was perfect for Lolth.
Unfortunately, since arriving in this world, she hadn’t had the chance to enjoy a whole day of peaceful fishing. After all, there was no water source near the Demon King Castle.
In the entire Demon King Castle, the place with the most liquid was the bath tower, which contained several large bathhouses designed for the demon race and monsters who enjoyed bathing. However, even though it was liquid, it was either acid or lava, with some resembling asphalt. Without using specially crafted alloy thread, fishing lines would corrode or melt in such conditions. And, of course, in these bathhouses—whether for humans or not—there were no fish to be found.
Lolth couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of regret about this.
Ever since arriving in Hillenbrand Town and discovering the abundance of aquatic creatures in its rivers—some even magical—Lolth had been excited! Last night, before bed, she rummaged through the warehouse and found the fishing kit she had made some time ago to satisfy her cravings. She quickly stuffed it into her magic bag.
The kit included a fishing rod, rod holder, fishing stool, parasol, a toolbox filled with various hooks and baits, and a water tank.
Once she arrived at the river, Lolth set up the parasol, unfolded the reclining chair, selected a hook, baited it, and smoothly cast the line. Then, she reclined comfortably.
“First catch with the Otherworld rod, never return empty-handed!” she murmured with a smile.
With her legs crossed and gazing at the clean, unpolluted river of Hillenbrand Town, the dense trees lining the opposite bank, and the azure sky overhead, Lolth felt a complete sense of comfort. This moment of tranquility was exactly what she had been seeking all along.
Not long after settling in, the fishing rod trembled slightly, as if something had been hooked.
“So quick! Is this what they call wild fishing in an undeveloped basin?” Lolth exclaimed, shocked. She immediately began to reel in the rod, feeling a heavy weight on the other end.
Had she not enchanted the rod with magic when she made it, its resilience would not have matched that of professional fishing gear from her past life, and it might have broken by now. But the thing on the other end didn’t seem to struggle. It simply sank quietly.
As a succubus, Lolth’s power wasn’t typically overwhelming, and she didn’t want to rely on magic for this leisurely fishing activity.
After slowly reeling in the rod for a while, the thing underwater finally broke the surface and emerged!
“Let me see what my first catch is… Oh, what in the world?!” Lolth exclaimed.
She stared in disbelief at what had come out of the water, unable to stop herself from swearing.
At the end of the fishing line was a damp wooden box. It looked ancient, with rusty yellow brass edges and a simple lock. The shape was unmistakable—a classic treasure chest.
Lolth dragged the box, which was almost as long as her arm, onto the shore, her mind racing.
“The shape is so classic, and… it turns out that in the Otherworld, you really can fish up ‘treasure chests’…” she mused.
The whole situation gave off an undeniable classic vibe. But thinking about it more, it made sense, especially considering there seemed to be a sunken ship underwater.
Despite her curiosity, Lolth decided not to open it for the time being.
“If only normal treasures were inside…” she thought. “But what if there are cursed weapons, vampires, or worse? That would definitely ruin today’s fishing plan.”
The box remained quiet, and Lolth chose not to worry about it for now.
But as she sat back, the sight of the chest made her realize something important. While the monsters would soon be sent away by the magic circle, there were still many limitations to the current magic circle.
What if the town residents also fished up something strange? That would be very dangerous!
She made a mental note to improve the magic circles set up yesterday.
But all of that would have to wait until after her fishing outing. No more slacking off.
