Chapter 59: On the Way to Hillenbrand
Lolth had deeply misunderstood, thinking Isabella was more “normal” than Tina.
After all, the two girls could play together, proving the old adage: “birds of a feather flock together.”
This person wasn’t just ambitious and self-destructive—getting up in the middle of the night with a magic bag to work—but seemed equally casual about courting death or survival.
Isabella’s earlier reaction had truly frightened her.
So much so that Lolth abandoned her plans to buy breakfast and hurried back to the kitchen in the torture tower to prepare Ryman’s hometown dish for her, hoping to dispel any thoughts of suicide.
Yet, even as Isabella ate Lolth’s carefully made meat patties, her mood barely improved.
Just moments ago, Lolth had said, “I definitely won’t kill myself.”
To Isabella, those words seemed neither kind nor forgiving.
It was clear the succubus intended to prolong her torment just to ensure she stayed alive!
Meanwhile, the Demon Army was preparing to advance on the front line, pushing the battle ever closer to Ryman’s border. Would the succubus use the information in her mind against her?
Thinking of the situation in the west, Isabella couldn’t help but sigh.
Though she had escaped punishment and was even allowed to enjoy the usual Ryman meat pie, she felt an overwhelming sense of pessimism about her future.
The lack of retribution only heightened her unease. It suggested the succubus was neither panicked nor rushed, viewing Isabella’s so-called “escape” and “resistance” as nothing more than predictable steps in a larger game.
And yet, Isabella couldn’t deny the small relief she felt in avoiding punishment. That, in itself, unsettled her.
She believed her willpower strong enough to resist any attempts at seduction, whether through indulgent food or drink. No amount of pampering from Lolth could sway her resolve.
But her sense of honor as a knight made simply enjoying such treatment an unbearable agony.
The meal that Isabella couldn’t enjoy soon came to an end.
As Tina diligently tidied up the tableware and Isabella remained downcast, Lolth sensed the heavy atmosphere lingering in the room. Deciding it was time to move on with the day’s plans, she spoke up.
“Alright, Tina, once you’ve put the dishes in the dishwasher, we’ll head to Hillenbrand Town. I plan to gather the townsfolk in the square to make an announcement. If either of you wants to change into more formal clothing, now’s your chance.”
Isabella, having discarded her damaged black dress from the morning, had chosen a similar style to wear instead. While the outfit suited her as a knight, it was hardly formal enough for the occasion.
Tina’s maid uniform was even less appropriate for such an event, though it seemed she had no intention of changing either.
Both of them declined Lolth’s suggestion without hesitation.
“No, thank you,” Isabella replied, her voice flat. Still feeling unwell, she clearly lacked the energy to bother with a wardrobe change.
Tina, on the other hand, refused with an almost startling resolve. “If you’re going to make an announcement to the townspeople, then I must wear the outfit Master Lolth rewarded me with! It best represents my loyalty as your servant.”
The elf’s earnestness was palpable, leaving no room for argument.
Hearing their refusals, Lolth scratched her head.
“Alright, alright… then I won’t change either.”
Initially, she’d considered altering her appearance slightly to avoid being recognized by the three individuals she’d encountered at the tavern last night.
But then, Lolth reconsidered. Why bother? She had been so generous and friendly the night before. Perhaps being recognized could actually help shift people’s perception of her as an Abyssal Demon.
Maybe those two customers and the landlady, upon recognizing her, would even tell others how kind she had been.
Lolth genuinely believed that the misunderstandings surrounding her race would eventually dissolve through continued interactions. However, there was no harm in speeding up the process.
With that thought in mind, she resolved to carry out a friendly exchange with the townsfolk in Hillenbrand’s central square later that day.
Tina quickly finished tidying up the table and cutlery.
Thanks to the magic devices designed for household chores, Tina’s work as a maid was simpler and more efficient than most. She only needed to activate the various magical tools.
“I’m ready, Master Lolth… Shall we set off now?” Tina asked.
Lolth nodded. “Then let’s go now!”
She raised her hand and cast a simple short-distance teleportation spell.
Since they weren’t in the Demon King’s Castle, Lolth felt confident. She didn’t have to worry about her colleagues noticing or getting into trouble for using spatial magic.
Lolth always portrayed herself as a weak succubus in the Demon King’s Castle, pretending not to know much. She had even claimed that the magic array in the torture tower was an ancient relic she had discovered.
After dining at the tavern in Hillenbrand Town yesterday, Lolth had quickly familiarized herself with the layout. She had memorized the coordinates of the town square.
With those coordinates, teleporting there became as simple and natural as breathing.
Her magical skills made teleporting with two people feel as effortless as putting on an extra layer of clothing—no issues at all.
Magic surged, space rumbled, and Tina and Isabella felt a slight dizziness. In the next moment, they found themselves standing in the central square of Hillenbrand Town.
The central square, as expected, was located right in the heart of the small town.
It was about the size of two basketball courts, paved with square bricks slightly neater than the streets. Surrounding it were not very tall buildings, with roads converging at this point.
However, the square was empty.
The buildings around the square mostly consisted of shops—grocery stores, fruit and vegetable stalls, general stores, and blacksmiths. These shops covered almost all the town’s daily needs and trade.
Despite it being morning, Hillenbrand Town seemed strangely desolate.
The shops were open, but it appeared they weren’t fully operational. No shopkeepers were visible inside, and there were no pedestrians in the streets.
“Nobody’s here…” Lolth remarked, a little puzzled. ‘Maybe today’s a holiday?’
But it didn’t matter. They still had to gather everyone.
