Chapter 50: A Regular Little Tavern, an Ordinary Landlady
After spending the entire afternoon setting up, Lolth felt that the safety of Hillenbrand Town had been significantly improved. It was now perfectly protected against monster invasions, surpassing even some large human cities in terms of security.
However, these magical formations were only the basics. If a legendary spellcaster appeared, they could easily be broken.
To truly enjoy a peaceful life without disturbances, setting up more discreet magical formations, escape arrays, and advanced protection magic had to be prioritized after completing the ecological chamber, farms, warehouses, and other new projects.
For Lolth, these arrangements were sufficient for now.
Of course, Lolth wasn’t entirely confident in the actual defensive capabilities of these magical formations. They might be strong enough to keep the main army of the Holy Alliance, along with their commanders, trapped for several days…
“After a hard day’s work, the basic magical formations are in place. Now it’s time to relax!”
Lolth thought for a moment and looked towards the town.
“Hm… It’s nighttime now, and the light is dim. I’d better hide my horns and tail. Hopefully, no one will notice, right?”
“This little town probably doesn’t have any strong individuals. Even if I blend in, no one will recognize me.”
“I’ll just say I’m a passing adventurer. It shouldn’t be a problem… It’s been so long since I’ve had a proper meal made by humans…”
After some consideration, Lolth decided to check out the town.
Although the population was only around two hundred people, there should be taverns or restaurants there!
The temptation to taste various foods from around the world, especially after spending seventeen years in the Abyss and two years in the Demon King’s Castle, had already become unbearable!
Since arriving in this different world, she hadn’t tasted any truly appetizing dishes made by the people of this unique world.
Even though Hillenbrand Town was just a small settlement, there might still be some decent food.
The opportunity was right in front of Lolth, and she couldn’t resist!
In the end, she stepped into the town.
But what surprised Lolth was that even though it was only around six or seven in the evening, there were no pedestrians on the streets!
Every household’s doors and windows were tightly shut, with only faint light seeping through the cracks!
Shops along the street had naturally closed early, with their windows boarded up.
The entire town was eerily quiet, with only the fading sunset glow and scattered garbage on the streets hinting at a bustling town during the day.
Feeling the tranquil moment, Lolth couldn’t help but sigh.
“Is this a simple border town, where people work at sunrise and rest at sunset, living plain and uneventful lives?”
“But the first taste of inter-world cuisine will have to wait—how disappointing…”
This succubus completely ignored the possibility that her arrival caused the situation.
Just as she was about to leave empty-handed and return tomorrow, she suddenly noticed a faint, warm glow coming from a small alley nearby.
Curious, she walked over and discovered that it was a tavern with its door wide open!
Above the door, a wooden sign with shiny gold letters read “Tavern” in simple common language, with two lanterns emitting soft light hanging below.
The half-closed wooden door allowed her to hear snippets of conversation coming from inside.
This unexpected discovery delighted Lolth.
“Indeed, no matter how small a town is, there’s always a place for nightlife!” she murmured to herself.
Muttering these words, she pushed open the tavern’s wooden door and stepped inside.
The cozy but not very spacious tavern featured only a simple wooden bar counter and seven or eight high stools. Behind the counter stood a tall liquor cabinet, with a menu hanging on one side. Next to the liquor cabinet, a bar counter and a small stove were placed side by side, while some common ingredients were piled up in a corner.
Besides the landlady, who lazily sat in a chair behind the bar, leaning against the liquor cabinet and smoking a pipe while wearing a thick fur coat, there were only two customers in the tavern.
One of them was a strong and muscular middle-aged man with well-developed biceps, a scruffy beard, dark, rough skin, and shabby clothes that looked worn out. He seemed a bit drunk, with several empty glasses in front of him.
The other customer appeared to be a quiet and somewhat destitute man, dressed in strange light blue clothing. By his feet lay a long box, and his somewhat handsome face bore signs of hardship, just like the story-filled light blue wine jug and small wine glass in front of him.
When Lolth entered, all three people turned to look at her, observing the girl wearing a black hoodie.
After a moment, the average-looking, lazy landlady behind the bar stood up from her tilted chair and walked to the front of the counter
“Oh, we have a new guest…”
“Welcome.”
