Chapter 49: Chain Space Magic Array
“Whew – it’s done!”
Standing on the north side of the town, Lolth rubbed her wrist and looked at her “masterpiece” of perfectly solving the monster problem, feeling a sense of achievement.
As dusk approached, the sunlight turned into a warm, soft orange-red hue, reflecting beautifully on the wide Larech River. The shimmering waves looked lovely, and the nearby fields were empty of workers. The spring harvest had just passed, so most fields were bare, which was not unusual for this time of year.
“I really worked hard today; I tired myself out!” Lolth exclaimed to herself.
She felt that she had depleted one percent of her magical power and estimated it would take more than ten minutes of rest to fully recover.
She had indeed completed quite a large project.
All afternoon, she had been setting up a Space Magic Array around the town. Initially, she planned to establish simple defensive magic arrays in the southern forests and riverbanks to detect and eliminate any intruding life forms.
However, Lolth soon rejected this idea.
She worried that, after a few days, the ecosystem of the monsters might still be endangered by their reckless charges. After all, lower-class monsters weren’t very smart.
There was also the risk of accidentally harming the residents of the town.
After some thought, Lolth decided to forgo the use of powerful magic arrays that could potentially cause harm.
Instead, she came up with a new idea.
She resolved to use her best Space Magic Array!
When any living being entered, the magic array would activate and send them back in the direction they came from.
This solution not only prevented magical creatures from causing trouble but also ensured the safety of both her property and Hillenbrand Town. Additionally, it stopped residents from endangering themselves by venturing into dangerous areas—a win-win situation!
Although Lolth was quite lazy and had no intention of ruling or governing this “town” seriously, she felt responsible for the safety of the residents since it was technically her “territory.”
To prevent mindless creatures from repeatedly exhausting themselves and draining the magic power of the automatic energy storage magic array, Lolth added a simple additional function. Each time the teleportation was activated, a Psychological Shockwave would also be triggered.
It was akin to using fireworks to scare away wild animals but achieved with magic instead.
Of course, to avoid alarming innocent civilians, the Psychological Shockwave only activated when magical creatures entered.
For an ordinary human, being suddenly teleported back was frightening enough. Adding a Psychological Shockwave might cause unnecessary panic.
Lolth briefly considered manipulating the minds of these magical creatures, as a real succubus might, to eliminate their fear of teleportation.
Unfortunately, contrary to what Isabella and Tina speculated, her knowledge of mental spells was quite limited. The Psychological Shockwave and its upgraded version, the Soul Blast, represented the extent of her expertise in mental and soul magic.
After completing the setup in the south, Lolth suddenly realized a potential issue. Just because there were many magical creatures in the rivers and forests to the south didn’t mean there were none in the north. What if blocking the southern route caused these low-intelligence creatures to migrate north?
Following the principle of “finishing what you start,” Lolth decided to set up the same formations on the east, west, and north sides. She left only a few gaps where roads led out of town but placed inactive magic arrays there as well.
This way, the entire town was protected by a series of linked Space Magic Arrays, resembling an invisible defense shield.
However, in this world, danger didn’t come only from magical creatures.
After establishing this protective circle around the small town, Lolth decided to investigate any existing issues within the area. To her surprise, she discovered several questionable spots.
For example, near the torture tower in the northeast corner, on the other side of the gentle slope where weeds grew rampant, there was a strange, damaged altar that appeared very ancient. Although it no longer emitted any magical residue, it still exuded an eerie feeling.
Additionally, although there were no magical creatures in the northern section of the river to the west, this very fact piqued Lolth’s curiosity. Upon further investigation, she discovered the wreckage of a ship. Despite being damaged, it showed no signs of rust or decay. The material resembled wood, yet its origin remained a mystery even to Lolth.
Finally, not far from the northern farmlands, there was a small lake surrounded by lush greenery. In the middle of the lake stood a small island, upon which rested a blurry statue of a woman whose origins were unknown.
After some deliberation, Lolth decided to add another layer of independent, inactive magic arrays to these locations. Should anything strange occur, these magical formations would serve as the first line of defense!
