Chapter 167: No Need to Chase, They Walked Into the Trap Themselves
“Now that we’re completely exposed, there’s no need for me to hide my strength,” Patricia said, her extraordinary power beginning to awaken. Huge waves of magic swirled around the body of the girl who seemed like a mere magic apprentice. “But then again… I just wanted to see how far you could go; I was only playing with you!”
After honestly admitting her earlier lack of seriousness, Dorothy looked at the Great Sage—clearly very strong, but with a somewhat mean demeanor—and sighed again.
“Now is not the time for jokes, Lady Patricia.”
“Don’t worry, everything is under my control,” Patricia said, her clear voice rising in a song, “O swift and protective wind, become my wings.”
As she spoke, a gentle yet swift wind swirled around her, lifting both her and Dorothy into the air.
The magic of the wind felt like a part of her, easily changing direction with her thoughts, carrying them both high above.
“Time to race the demon dragon in the sky—Woohoo—”
Patricia cheered, her robe and hair flying in the wind. Although her robe was now very fitting, it still fluttered around her.
She waved her pale arms, controlling the brisk wind, guiding the pale-faced Dorothy, who kept her mouth shut in fear, towards Hillenbrand Town.
Using wind magic to fly is a basic skill many elemental mages learn, with the simplest spell, “Levitation,” being a level-two magic spell.
However, not everyone can overcome the fear of being swept away by the wind, feeling like they would fall at any moment!
Especially for Dorothy, who was flying this way for the first time.
Although she had flown before on a magical beast, holding onto a reliable large creature felt completely different from being blown away by the wind.
Especially with a demon dragon in the sky spotting her and diving towards her, Dorothy could not stay calm at all.
“Relax, little girl… Be careful not to fall off! Ha ha ha ha!”
Patricia let out a clear and quick laugh like a small bird, twirling her fingers as they spun in the air, speeding up a little more and increasing the distance from the demon dragon that had closed in from their previous sprint.
“Having wings is impressive—dummy, come catch me!”
Patricia shouted at the demon dragon left behind, surprisingly using the deep abyss demon dragon language.
Finally starting to adapt a little, Dorothy heard Patricia’s voice. She trembled and asked, “What did you just say?”
“Oh, I just meant for it to stop chasing us, like begging for mercy, we are just innocent mages passing by.”
Patricia calmly told a lie.
“It can’t be! Are you making them chase faster?” Dorothy shouted into the wind, feeling dizzy.
“You understand the demon dragon language?” Patricia exclaimed in surprise.
“I don’t understand, but your tone and their reactions seem to suggest that!”
Dorothy said this as she turned to look at the demon dragons in the air. Their wings were flapping at least 30 to 40 percent faster than before, and several of them had magical light shining from their mouths.
“Be careful—it’s about to breathe fire!”
Dorothy called out.
“Got it, got it, got it! Get ready to dodge—Woohoo!”
Patricia laughed without any fear, easily dodging the several breaths of demon dragons that shot toward her.
“There are also some on the ground!”
Dorothy kept reminding her.
“I saw it early!”
Patricia skillfully dodged the giant rocks thrown by the troll, the flying axes, and the fireballs spewed by the Balrog.
From beginning to end, Patricia was still just using a flying spell.
Startled, Dorothy looked at the increasing number of demon creatures and couldn’t help but ask, “Why don’t you use a shield or other magic?”
“To save magic power.”
Patricia, the Great Sage, offered an explanation that seemed reasonable but was actually completely unreliable.
As a Great Sage-level mage, her magic power, though not limitless, was still enough for her to cast level six spells as effortlessly as a normal attack!
Using spells below level three might not even use up magic power as fast as she could recover it!
But Dorothy had no way to blame the other person for anything.
After all, it was Patricia flying her now!
Besides, Dorothy had already figured out a bit of what Patricia was doing.
This Great Sage, with a seemingly troubled personality, was “playing”!
She was mostly just having fun right now!
The only thing to be thankful for was that, at this speed, the Great Sage wouldn’t be able to keep going for much longer before reaching Hillenbrand Town.
From their current distance, they could already see the tributary of the Larech River flowing through Hillenbrand Town.
But the end of this chase game came sooner than Dorothy had expected.
After they got closer to Hillenbrand Town, these demons suddenly stopped chasing.
“Strange, why did those demon dragons stop?”
“The troll and Balrog even went back home?”
Dorothy felt very confused.
They were so close to their destination, why were they not being chased anymore?
“I don’t know, maybe I annoyed them, and they don’t want to play with me anymore.”
Patricia said this, but the lack of a smile on her face showed that she also thought this was a bit strange.
“Logically… they should understand the importance of Hillenbrand Town, so why does it seem like there are no demons there?”
Great Sage Patricia thought for a moment without coming to any conclusion.
“Forget it… let’s go down and take a look!”
She murmured this as she slowly descended to the edge of the town with Dorothy.
Although she felt confused, since they were no longer chasing, that was a good thing.
Anyway, Patricia had complete confidence in her abilities—humbly speaking, her skill in magic could certainly rank in the top three across the entire continent.
What Patricia didn’t know was that if she had just used a spell to listen in on the conversations among the demon race, she would have understood why they had stopped chasing.
“We’ve reached Master Lolth’s territory!”
“No wonder Master Lolth didn’t say how we should handle this; it turns out we’re going to her!”
“This must have been something Lord Lolth predicted long ago…”
“I understand now; this is the plan of Lord Interrogator… She must have intentionally leaked some information, making the other side believe this small town has value!”
“No wonder the lord wanted to go to the West personally!”
“Let’s finish our work; we don’t need to worry anymore.”
