Chapter 153: Don’t Forget to Take Your Vitamins During Leisure Time
After posting the holiday notice, Lolth strolled around the town, using a horn to warn residents to stay vigilant against the magic tide. Once her duties were complete, she returned to the torture tower.
Finally free, Lolth anticipated some leisure time to bake cakes. However, upon entering the kitchen, she was greeted by two unexpected visitors.
Kanor Fuen—an eight-year-old human girl—and her fairy maid, Tina, were an unusual pairing. Kanor often borrowed the kitchen to whip up snacks, so her presence wasn’t surprising. But Tina’s appearance was. She had been supervising the construction site just moments ago.
Lolth observed them from a distance. Tina was slicing fruits for a platter while Kanor operated a magic blender, cheerfully preparing a mixed fruit and vegetable juice. The scene was harmonious.
Tina regarded Kanor as Lolth’s apprentice and felt responsible for looking after her. Conversely, Kanor considered Tina a potential future wife of Master Lolth, which made her keen on building a good relationship. Thus, their interactions were unfailingly polite.
“Try this, Kanor,” Tina offered. “It’s a magic mango freshly picked from the southern greenhouse.”
“Thank you, Sister Tina. You should try my juice blend—carrot, tomato, and apple. It’s perfect for fairies!”
Lolth, washing her hands at the sink, glanced at the duo. They resembled a stepmother and daughter from a blended family, and she couldn’t resist teasing them.
“Are you two sharing vitamins with each other?”
Hearing her voice, Kanor and Tina turned toward her simultaneously.
“Master Lolth!”
“Master Lolth!”
Both stood and bowed.
“You don’t have to stop what you’re doing,” Lolth said with a smile. “But what brings you here today? Surely, it’s not just for fruit and juice?”
The pair exchanged a glance and shook their heads.
“That’s not it, Master Lolth. I wanted to ask when classes will resume,” Kanor said.
Lolth considered for a moment. “We’ll wait for the magic tide to pass. It’s a significant distraction for beginners like you. By the way, how’s your progress?”
Kanor hesitated, then replied with an embarrassed expression. “I’m sorry, Master Lolth. My progress has been slow. I’ve been distracted by unimportant things.”
Lolth observed her thoughtfully. Despite her struggles with cooking, Kanor had made remarkable progress in magic and martial arts, reaching an advanced apprentice level in both. Her combat power now rivaled that of formal adventurers.
“It’s fine,” Lolth reassured her. “Slow progress builds a solid foundation. Remember, ‘If the foundation is weak, the earth will shake.’ Your efforts now are valuable. Don’t lose heart.”
Kanor nodded, visibly relieved. “I understand, Master Lolth.”
Lolth then turned to Tina. “And you? Is there something you need?”
Tina straightened and reported, “Master Lolth, though the Western New Development Zone project is on hold due to the magic tide, Maider believes we shouldn’t neglect the area entirely. Magical creatures and disturbances are likely.”
She handed over some documents. “We propose forming patrol teams to monitor high-risk areas, particularly where magical materials are stored. Relying on villagers alone isn’t enough.”
Lolth nodded in agreement. “A good point. I hadn’t considered that.”
Adjusting her approach, she said, “Organize the patrols. Select capable leaders from the former Holy Alliance members, above Superlative Level, to manage shifts. Ensure no one works more than eight hours. Superoperators need rest too.”
She added, “As for compensation, triple the usual pay for workdays. Even if Superoperators don’t need money, it shows our sincerity. Also, the cafeteria will remain open 24/7 with higher wages for staff. Warm meals should always be available.”
Kanor raised her hand eagerly. “I can help! My foster mother might also move her tavern to the Southern New District—I could persuade her to assist.”
Lolth, however, shook her head. “You’re still a child, Kanor. Focus on growing up. But your foster mother is welcome anytime. We’ll always have a place for her in the food area!”
