Chapter 145: The Anti-Magic Domain of the Pirate Ship
Kanor initially wanted to decline Doyle’s persistent requests. But Doyle, astutely observing Kanor’s reverence for Lolth, quickly found a way to persuade the girl.
Her words were carefully chosen, exploiting Kanor’s hesitation.
“Your Excellency Doyle, thank you for your kindness, but I’ve only been learning under my master for a short time…” Kanor began.
“That’s fine. I can wait for you to complete your training. For now, it’s just a title.”
“But my dream is to become a free-spirited itinerant chef…”
“No problem,” Doyle replied with a smile. “The position of head of the food department would only be honorary. All you’d need to do is share a few recipes and occasionally advise the chefs we hire. Of course, you’d be compensated for your time.”
“That doesn’t seem right…”
“If you’re unsure, how about being our food advisor instead?” Doyle added, her tone light. “By the way, Lady Lolth recently became the livelihood advisor for the Demon Army. You two share a remarkable humility!”
This final comment struck a chord with Kanor.
She is comparing me to Master Lolth? And she seems to be a friend of Master Lolth?
At only eight years old, Kanor was unprepared for such clever persuasion and found herself falling for it.
“Alright,” she relented, “but I must finish my training first. And if the recipes involve Master Lolth’s guidance, you’ll need her permission! I also need to discuss this with my adoptive mother.”
Hearing this, Doyle’s face lit up with satisfaction.
“No problem, Lady Kanor,” Doyle said warmly, shaking the girl’s hand. “I look forward to working and learning from you!”
Doyle had her reasons for securing this partnership.
As soon as she heard Kanor was Princess Lolth’s apprentice, Doyle resolved to form a connection with the girl. Especially after witnessing her skill—Kanor’s knife, used earlier to debone a chicken, was a magical artifact.
This wasn’t just any magical item. Doyle, as the head of the Little Devil Guild, recognized it as an ancient alchemical creation. By her estimation, it was at least Level Nine, possibly even a pseudo-Divine Artifact.
Such a tool was far beyond what an eight-year-old could acquire on her own. It had to be a gift from Lolth, signaling the immense value she placed on her apprentice.
This alone was enough for Doyle to seek favor with Kanor.
After all, the cunning and meticulous Lolth wouldn’t take on an ordinary student.
Seizing the opportunity to further impress Kanor and ingratiate herself with Lolth, Doyle turned to Maider and Tina.
“It seems you’re encountering difficulties with your bridge construction,” she said, gesturing toward the river, where workers appeared puzzled and frustrated.
Maider hesitated but eventually explained.
“Yes… the magical materials lose their power in certain areas while we work,” he admitted.
Doyle nodded thoughtfully. “I see…”
Reaching into her Gothic-style waist bag, Doyle rummaged for a moment before pulling out an ancient-looking object resembling goggles.
“Magic—Power—Making—Glasses!”
She placed the device on her head, aimed it at the river, and pressed a button.
A powerful wave of magical energy erupted from the glasses, though it produced no tangible force. Instead, invisible magic scanned the area, forming vivid images on the glass lenses.
The shapes were color-coded and labeled with ancient text, identifying the objects beneath the water’s surface.
“Hmm… twenty-six magic circles,” Doyle murmured. “Fourteen related to space, eight for warnings, and four for sealing. This must be Lady Lolth’s handiwork.”
She continued her analysis, uncovering the source of the disruption.
At last, she removed the glasses and addressed Maider and Tina.
“At the bottom of the river lies a shipwreck about twenty meters long. Lady Lolth sealed it, but the real issue is the ship’s keel. It’s made of a rare anti-magic material. Her Excellency’s magic circles didn’t cover the material’s effect, which is disrupting your magical tools.”
Maider’s face grew serious.
“An anti-magic keel… It must be a pirate ship,” he speculated. “Many great pirate crews used such materials for their ships, allowing them to navigate forbidden seas and fend off magical beasts. The Anti-Magic Domain could be activated as needed to prevent attacks from sea monsters.”
He sighed deeply.
“Still, I’m surprised to find one here. Thank you, Your Excellency Doyle, for your detection efforts. But we’re powerless to deal with something like this. We should report it to Master Lolth.”
Tina interjected.
“You said the Anti-Magic Domain was ‘activated.’ Does that mean it can be deactivated?”
Maider nodded.
“Of course. Pirates needed the option to disable it; otherwise, they couldn’t use their own magical powers. However, only pirates or someone familiar with their techniques would know how. It’s powered by a unique magical circle, which we cannot replicate or control.”
He turned to Tina, cutting her off before she could speak further.
“In other words, this is beyond our capabilities.”
As the adults deliberated, Kanor, who had been quietly enjoying her fried chicken, finally spoke up.
“I think I know someone who can give it a try…”
