Chapter 144: The Little Devil Guild Cordially Invites You to Be a Food Consultant
Unlike other demons, who often act impulsively, Doyle Candice had a clear understanding of human desires—especially their love for delicacies.
This insight aligned with what Lady Interrogator Lolth had long been working on.
Even though the Demon King’s appointment of a “Chief Consultant” seemed like a trivial task for a subordinate, Doyle had chosen to handle it personally.
As expected, her visit revealed something extraordinary—Lady Lolth had established an agricultural zone in Hillenbrand Town.
When Doyle entered the Southern Dining Hall, her confidence soared.
The hall showcased a wide array of crops and dishes beloved by all races of the mainland. To her surprise, the dining hall had also become a haven for Superoperators—likely deserters from the Holy Alliance—drawn in by the allure of this thriving community.
This realization strengthened Doyle’s resolve.
These resources would undoubtedly give her an advantage in upcoming negotiations with nobles.
Still, she knew that since these crops were Lolth’s property and essential for feeding the populace, she couldn’t profit from them directly. Everything had to be reported truthfully to the Demon King.
However, Doyle couldn’t ignore the broader potential.
Humans, especially the wealthy, would never settle for simple and bland food. Whether commoners or nobles, people craved variety and high-quality cuisine.
This demand created a natural opportunity for business—restaurants, delis, high-end dining establishments, and even street snacks.
Lady Lolth seemed to have anticipated this perfectly.
The cafeteria in Hillenbrand Town offered an impressive selection beyond the basics. For a modest fee, one could enjoy barbecues, hot pots, roasted meats, stir-fries, steaks, and more—dishes Doyle had never seen or imagined.
Even as a Little Devil uninterested in food, Doyle could sense the irresistible allure these aromas held for humans.
Drinks were equally diverse, with “cola” being a standout. Humans called it “Abyss Happy Water,” a name that amused Doyle but also showcased Lolth’s genius in reshaping perceptions of the abyss.
After all, the abyss was traditionally associated with chaos and evil. Names like “Death Fang” or “Decay Root” were the norm for abyssal creatures and materials. Yet here was a drink turning those associations on their head.
Beer, on the other hand, was particularly popular among dwarves and drunks.
Doyle couldn’t help but admire Lolth’s foresight.
When Lolth first arrived on the main plane, Doyle had dismissed her focus on food cultivation as a mere eccentricity. Now she understood the deeper strategy behind it.
Lolth wasn’t just addressing survival needs—she was revolutionizing the concept of delicacies.
Through Hillenbrand Town and its Superoperators, Doyle learned that Lolth herself had developed many of these recipes.
This level of vision set Lolth apart. It was no wonder the Demon King entrusted her with matters of livelihood.
Realizing this, Doyle resolved to secure the Little Devil Guild’s management rights over Lolth’s delicacies.
Her musings were interrupted as she flew toward the riverbank.
There, Kanor was handing out fried chicken to a small crowd.
This child looks familiar, Doyle thought.
She remembered Kanor from the torture tower and even earlier, during Lolth’s travels across Vera Plain.
Approaching with a smile, Doyle greeted the group.
“Everyone… what are you eating?”
Maider, Tina, and the others turned to face her, their expressions warm rather than hostile.
Among them were dwarves who once worked as craftsmen for the Holy Alliance.
Tina nodded and introduced Doyle to the group.
“Her Excellency Doyle, have you finished your discussion with Master Lolth?” Tina asked, holding a chicken leg in hand.
“Yes,” Doyle replied casually. “But I’m in no rush to leave, so I’m just exploring… What are you all eating?”
Tina pointed to Kanor, who was busy deboning chicken.
“It’s a new dish by Miss Kanor Fuen—Master Lolth’s student.”
Doyle raised an eyebrow in surprise and turned to Kanor.
“So, your name is Kanor? Nice to meet you.”
Kanor paused her work and looked at Doyle.
“You’re Doyle Candice, right? Master Lolth mentioned you before.”
“That’s me,” Doyle confirmed with a nod, getting straight to the point.
“Ms. Kanor Fuen, I’m here on behalf of the Little Devil Guild to formally invite you to become the head of our food department. Would you be interested?”
Kanor hesitated, but before she could respond, Doyle continued eagerly.
“Of course, I’m only seeking your opinion for now. If you’re interested, I’ll discuss the details with Lady Lolth to ensure it won’t interfere with your training or relationship with her.
“In return, you and Lady Lolth would receive a share of the profits. But if you’re uncomfortable with the arrangement, I won’t press you!”
Doyle’s words were earnest, her eyes fixed on Kanor with a hopeful expression.
