Chapter 142: Who Would Want to Eat What You, a Succubus, Made!
After returning to her room, Isabella closed the door and sat blankly in front of the fireplace.
Inside, she felt a storm of confusion brewing.
She had overheard nearly the entire conversation between Lolth and Doyle. Ever since her discussion with Lolth in Palgauro City, Isabella had been deliberately avoiding thinking about her.
But all along the journey, one thing became increasingly clear—Lolth was not the evil being she had expected.
This succubus had a lazy, carefree personality, but she expended effort for the well-being of the common people. She hadn’t obliterated the remaining forces of the Holy Alliance and had even allowed them relative freedom after arriving in Hillenbrand Town.
The only significant action she had taken was against the cultists.
Lolth might claim it was the Red Dragon Shelldor who had dealt with them, but Isabella knew better. Before losing consciousness, she had felt the immense power of the cultist Chyzh Winchester—power far beyond what Shelldor could manage alone.
This wasn’t the first time Isabella had blacked out in front of Lolth, only to awaken to strange happenings. After all, it was because of this succubus that she had ended up in the Interrogation Department in the first place.
She had tried to blame everything on Lolth—her failures, her misfortunes—but the truth was hard to ignore.
Lolth was kind-hearted.
This realization left Isabella conflicted. The conversation between Lolth and Doyle only reinforced the fact.
Both the Little Devil and the Holy Alliance had assumed she would fall. Even her former allies had sent her false information, misleading her while undermining her efforts.
They never trusted her. They never believed she could be anything more than a pawn.
And yet…
It was Lolth who had spoken up for her.
The encouragement in Palgauro City, the supportive words spoken earlier to the demons—all of it had been genuine.
Lolth believed in her.
To everyone else, she was a failure, a captive, and a fallen warrior.
“Darn it,” Isabella muttered, hugging her knees. “I can’t believe a… succubus accepted me.”
Her voice softened as she whispered, “That annoying person.”
The truth stung. Knowing her former allies didn’t trust her was not a surprise. Yet, even anticipated betrayals were painful to bear.
Isabella had been raised with lessons on family, honor, and responsibility. To feel dismissed by those she once trusted deeply cut into her resolve.
It wasn’t the false information from the Holy Alliance that had shaken her the most—it was Lolth’s unwavering support.
“It’s ironic,” she whispered. “My allies think I’m unreliable, yet I was saved by the demon race I’ve despised my entire life… and even Shelldor.”
The Holy Alliance’s betrayal was one thing, but the real turmoil came from Lolth.
This demon, this succubus, had insisted that Isabella was not fallen.
If that were true, then what had happened that night?
Memories of that enchanting, unforgettable night surged into her mind. Her cheeks flushed as the thoughts overwhelmed her.
She wasn’t so sure anymore. Did she truly hate this demon?
“Stay calm, Isabella,” she murmured, patting her cheeks lightly.
“Even if she isn’t evil or chaotic… even if there are good people among the demons… this is still a war!”
As she whispered to herself, a sudden knock interrupted her thoughts.
“Isabella, are you okay?” Lolth’s voice called from outside the door.
Though this room had been designated as her “interrogation room,” Lolth had never once forced her way in.
“Um… I didn’t mean to hide the information I saw,” Lolth began awkwardly.
“There are misunderstandings here… Please open the door!”
“Actually, I never planned to keep you here for too long. If you think staying here is bad, I’ll undo the shackles. Just come to me for a moment—it’ll be like you escaped.”
“Please, don’t think so negatively,” Lolth added.
Hearing her words, Isabella froze.
Then, a small smile crept onto her face.
She walked to the door and opened it.
Standing awkwardly in the doorway was Lolth.
The sight made Isabella’s smile vanish as she quickly put on a serious expression.
“You hypocritical succubus,” Isabella said coldly. “Where could I possibly escape to now? The Holy Alliance would think I was an undercover agent you sent!”
Lolth sighed with relief at Isabella’s sharp tone.
“You’re right. I didn’t think this through. Still, you haven’t actually done any harm to the Holy Alliance,” Lolth replied.
“I know,” Isabella admitted. “Because the information was all wrong, and you figured it out yourself, didn’t you?”
Lolth looked sheepish. “It was just a guess.”
“Quite impressive… Lolthlinda.”
Lolth blinked in surprise. “Wait, what did you just call me?”
“Lolth. Linda.” Isabella blushed faintly, recalling how Shelldor had casually called her that when no one else was around.
“Or… would you prefer I call you ‘Mistress’?” Isabella teased.
“No, no! ‘Lolthlinda’ is fine,” Lolth quickly replied, looking strangely pleased.
“So, what are your plans now?” Lolth asked cautiously.
Isabella paused, unsure how to answer.
“I don’t know,” she admitted. “But I suppose I’ll stay here for now. With so many new Superoperators in Hillenbrand, there’s plenty to be done. A knight’s protection doesn’t end on the battlefield.”
She added firmly, “But I won’t fight for you, succubus. And when I figure out where to go, I’ll leave.”
“So, you’re staying for now,” Lolth summarized with a nod.
“Alright then. Are you hungry? Should I bake you some pies?”
“Who would want to eat what you make?” Isabella snapped, though her lips tightened as if holding back a smile.
Still, she couldn’t stop herself from swallowing.
