Chapter 141: Congratulations to Lady Lolth on Being Promoted to Chief Consultant of the Demon Army
After a brief silence, Doyle suddenly seemed to realize she had no reason to feel guilty. Confidence returned to her demeanor.
“Lady Lolth, I was sent by the Demon King. Your fairy maid said she didn’t know where you went and told me to wait for you in the reception room,” Doyle began, her gaze shifting between the five lambs and the farmer’s hat perched on Lolth’s head. She let out a resigned sigh.
“But you, Lady Lolth… hiding your presence and suddenly appearing really startled me.”
Hearing this, Lolth felt compelled to explain.
“Well… um, I was out dressed as a shepherd,” she stammered. “You know, the Demon King cares deeply about the lives of ordinary people. Naturally, I wanted to experience real life and enjoy it with them.”
As she spoke, even Lolth herself felt the excuse was flimsy.
Doyle, however, wore an expression of doubt.
“Really…? Then how did you come into contact with Holy Light? Were you attacked by a priest?” Doyle asked directly.
“What Holy Light? I have no idea what you’re talking about,” Lolth said, feigning ignorance. “Your Excellency Doyle, could it be that you misunderstood?”
“Maybe…” Doyle responded uncertainly, though she still seemed suspicious.
Lolth, eager to shift the topic, quickly asked, “So why did the Demon King send you here, Your Excellency Doyle?”
“It’s nothing major,” Doyle said casually. “The Demon King asked me to inform you that the Holy Alliance’s attack has begun.”
“What? The Holy Alliance has launched an attack?” Lolth exclaimed, clearly taken aback.
She had just returned from the Western Front and had seen no signs of trouble.
Doyle nodded. “Yes, it matches the intelligence you provided, Lady Lolth. Currently, the Central and Eastern Fronts are holding steady. We’ve successfully set up an ambush on the other side of Dragonspine Mountain.”
“Wait… how does it match exactly?” Lolth interrupted, her confusion growing.
“Well, it’s not a perfect match,” Doyle admitted. “There were some issues at Dragonspine Mountain. Two members of the Phantom Legion got greedy, so the mission there is still incomplete. It’s clear they lack discipline…”
Lolth began to piece things together. The troops on the Western Front had remained stationary because the focus had shifted to Dragonspine Mountain.
“So this attack plan involves moving the Central Front’s forces to Dragonspine Mountain?” Lolth asked.
“Exactly,” Doyle confirmed. “Thanks to your intelligence, Lady Lolth. All prior information pointed to the Western Front. Only the Demon King believed you from the start—who would have guessed those humans would go to such lengths to create false information?”
As Doyle spoke, Lolth suddenly recalled the letter she had fished out of the river.
“I’m such a fool!” Lolth berated herself inwardly.
She finally realized the letter addressed to Isabella had been a ploy—a trap laid out by the Holy Alliance.
Outwardly, Lolth maintained her composure, masking her frustration.
“Yes, the Holy Alliance’s schemes are indeed cunning and wicked. They created the illusion of a Western Front target to obscure their real intentions,” she said confidently.
“But they made a critical mistake,” Doyle added with a chuckle. “They trusted a prisoner. They never imagined that knight was already under your control.”
Lolth hesitated, then sighed. “No, Isabella wasn’t under my control at all. She hasn’t even fallen. In fact, she destroyed that letter.”
Doyle looked surprised. “Oh dear, Lady Lolth, are you saying that knight…?”
She trailed off, choosing instead to pat a lamb that had wandered close to her.
“Anyway,” Doyle continued, “the Demon King is very pleased with your work. She intends to promote you.”
“Let’s discuss that after the battle,” Lolth said, waving her hands dismissively. “I’m just a little succubus; I’m not cut out for such responsibility!”
“Actually, the promotion isn’t just a reward,” Doyle explained. “You’ve helped Her Excellency Shelldor and others resolve countless issues on the Vera Plain. Hillenbrand Town is thriving under your guidance. The Demon King has recognized your exceptional abilities in governance and management.”
Lolth sighed in defeat. “Alright… what have you all turned me into?”
Seeing Lolth’s reluctance, Doyle couldn’t help but admire her humility.
“Don’t worry, Lady Lolth. Your main role remains in the Interrogation Department. The Demon King is appointing you as Chief Consultant for the Demon Army’s livelihood issues. It’s a leisurely position, really!”
Hearing that, Lolth’s expression softened, though doubt lingered.
“Chief Consultant… that doesn’t sound leisurely at all,” she murmured.
Still, she couldn’t refuse the title outright. With a resigned nod, she accepted it.
“Well, does Your Excellency Doyle have any other business?” Lolth asked.
“The official matters are done. I need to attend to personal affairs now,” Doyle replied, standing to leave.
“Until next time, Lady Lolth.”
With that, Doyle flew to the window, opened it, and disappeared into the sky.
Once outside, Doyle immediately contacted her subordinates.
“Lady Lolthlinda seems a bit down today and has residual traces of Holy Light energy. Although she didn’t say much, I suspect she’s been attacked. Investigate what the Church of Light is planning. Use our contacts in Seychelles if necessary. The Demon King has made it clear—Lady Lolth’s safety is the top priority!”
Inside the room, Lolth rubbed her temples and sighed.
“There really is no good news these days,” she muttered.
Changing out of her farmer’s outfit, she donned her usual casual clothes—T-shirt and pants—and stepped out of the reception room.
As she opened the door, she saw Isabella standing outside, looking dazed.
The knight’s eyes were unfocused, her hand still raised as if holding something. A fallen teacup lay on the floor at her feet.
“Isabella?” Lolth called softly.
The knight startled, snapped out of her trance. Without a word, she turned and ran.
