Chapter 140: Doyle, Why Is It You Again?
Since her soul had been cleansed by the power of the “Holy Light,” Janine Irene dismissed her earlier feelings of “evil” and “impurity” as mere misunderstandings.
After all, this place was close to the Abyssal Demons’ gathering spot, so it was natural for her senses to be influenced. Having never encountered the demon race before, she reasoned her anxiety was to blame.
The young girl named Kululu seemed to come from a pure and simple background, with a pleasant personality and remarkable potential. At fifteen, it wasn’t too late for her to begin learning extraordinary powers.
Janine Irene thought it was the perfect opportunity to nurture new talents for both the church and Her Holiness.
As the leader of the Oracles Knight Order, Janine Irene knew her position carried great responsibility. Unfortunately, most of the vice leaders and high-ranking captains were aligned with cathedral bishops or were descendants of Holy Lieto Empire officials.
The Mercy and Justice groups operated under similar dynamics. While they all served the God of Light, the factional loyalties of her subordinates made it difficult for Janine Irene to entrust them with missions appointed directly by Her Holiness.
With the old pope gravely ill, every cardinal and archbishop saw an opportunity to ascend to the papacy. While their piety was undeniable, Janine Irene couldn’t help but feel that many lacked true virtue.
It was for this reason that Janine Irene took a personal interest in Kululu. The girl, free of noble ties or factional influence, represented the potential for a reliable and untainted ally.
With her Holy Light affinity, Kululu might even surpass expectations. Janine Irene envisioned her becoming an epic-level Paladin—possibly even reaching legend status.
As a legend-level Paladin herself, Janine Irene believed she could elevate Kululu to Epic High Level within ten years.
Excited by the possibilities, she began planning how to report her intentions to Her Holiness.
Meanwhile, Lolth stood across from her, staring at the “friendly and kind” Paladin. She couldn’t suppress her true feelings.
“No, what a hassle. Let’s skip it,” Lolth said, waving her hand dismissively with a pained expression.
For Lolth, learning extraordinary powers was never the issue. It was the idea of pretending to be the gifted Holy Light girl, Kululu, while enduring Janine Irene’s endless enthusiasm.
That was unbearable.
“If there’s nothing else, I’ll take my leave. I still have to tend to the sheep,” Lolth said, turning away without giving Janine Irene time to respond.
The Paladin watched her go, shocked by the outright refusal.
From a common-sense perspective, no ordinary villager would reject the chance to become a Superoperator.
Janine Irene hesitated but decided not to call Lolth back. As a Paladin of The Church of Light, she prided herself on good manners and would not force someone to act against their will.
Besides, in the Seychelles camp, she represented the Oracles Knight Order and the face of The Church of Light. She couldn’t show excessive enthusiasm for a common girl.
Still, Janine Irene had high hopes for Kululu.
“She’s just a simple girl,” Janine thought, reassured by the knowledge that Kululu’s name, appearance, and address were now known.
Later, she could visit Kululu privately and explain the benefits of joining the Oracles Knight Order. Surely, the girl would reconsider once she understood the rewards of becoming a Superoperator.
This refusal was likely due to ignorance of what the position truly represented.
Feeling confident, Janine resolved to persuade Kululu during her stay in the camp.
However, what Janine didn’t know was that Lolth had no intention of staying.
As soon as she was out of sight, Lolth used space magic to locate the lambs in the stable. Gathering all five, she quickly teleported away.
Having confirmed that the Holy Alliance wouldn’t attack for several days, and knowing The Church of Light’s representative, Lolth decided there was no reason to remain.
Janine Irene was too much trouble, and Lolth had no interest in further involvement.
Her sharp intuition was particularly problematic.
“In any case, we cannot let the Demon Army discover the movements on the new western front. Most importantly, this Paladin must not be captured,” Lolth thought.
She resolved to teleport Janine Irene away if her actions risked exposing Lolth’s secrets.
After all, if the Paladin discovered her slacking off or her misuse of funds, Lolth would face dire consequences with the Demon King.
Teleporting back to the torture tower in Hillenbrand Town, Lolth set the reception room as her arrival point, where Tina and Isabella rarely ventured.
However, upon arrival, Lolth was greeted by a familiar figure.
The pink-haired, childlike figure of Doyle Candice stood in the room.
“Lady Doyle Candice? What are you doing here!” Lolth exclaimed, startled.
Doyle, equally surprised, stared at Lolth, who was dressed like a countryside shepherd.
“Lady Lolth, why are you dressed like this? And why is there residual Holy Light energy on you? What’s with these five sheep?” Doyle asked, her tone a mix of confusion and concern.
The two locked eyes in an uneasy silence.
