Chapter 139: Kululu, Do You Desire Power?
Although Janine Irene’s role was that of a knight, the title “Oracle” was no mere decoration.
The Paladins of the Compassionate Order excelled in healing, the Judgement Order specialized in devastating attacks, but the Oracle Knight Order stood apart with one extraordinary skill: unparalleled perception.
As commander of the Oracle Knight Order, Janine Irene wielded a divine spell personally cast by the saintess, alongside the permanent blessing she received with her title.
This blessing not only amplified her perception abilities but also granted her an almost supernatural sixth sense.
Even though Lolth’s aura was meticulously disguised, leaving no trace of demonic fluctuation, Janine’s intuition—sharpened to a razor’s edge by her blessing—picked up on something unusual.
With what seemed like an almost playful ease, Janine’s intuition pierced through the deceptive normalcy of the little girl in the distance, sensing a peculiarity that even Lolth hadn’t anticipated.
When Lolth noticed Janine’s unwavering gaze fixed upon her, a chill ran down her spine.
“Are the people from the Church of Light really this terrifying?” she wondered.
Lolth’s first instinct was to flee using space magic. Yet, despite her initial panic, she calmed herself.
Janine’s eyes held no hostility. Instead, there was only curiosity and uncertainty.
“If my identity as a demon were truly exposed,” Lolth reasoned, “she would have already struck me down with Holy Light.”
And indeed, Janine’s perception had left her puzzled. While her intuition sensed that Lolth was anything but ordinary, the reasons for these feelings eluded her.
It was as though the girl standing before her was an enigma, composed of a swirling mix of contradictions:
Danger and power.
Evil and closeness.
Chaos and holiness.
Peace and turmoil.
Sometimes, Janine felt as if the girl resembled Her Holiness herself. At other times, she seemed like a cultist. Or a sage. Or a tainted being.
Yet, more often than not, she simply seemed like an ordinary child.
These conflicting impressions left Janine deeply unsettled. Her honed intuition had never failed her before—so what could explain this anomaly?
Unless… this little girl carried the souls of dozens within her.
Still, with the saintess arriving in a few days, Janine couldn’t ignore the oddities. Ensuring the saintess’s safety was paramount.
She dismounted her horse, leaving her subordinates and the Seychelles soldiers confused as she walked directly toward Lolth.
Lolth, for her part, made a swift decision to stay put. Running would only invite suspicion.
Standing before Lolth, Janine softened her tone.
“What is your name?”
The accent of the southern mainland was clear in her speech. Lolth, recognizing the peaceful intent, exhaled quietly.
“My name is Kululu. I am fifteen years old,” she replied, her voice steady as she launched into the backstory she had carefully prepared.
“I live in Ditch Village, near the Seychelles border. Today, while grazing my sheep on the Loess Plateau, I somehow wandered to this defense line. Thankfully, the officers here were kind enough to let me rest. Tomorrow, when the transport team arrives, they’ll take me home.”
Janine nodded gently, her expression one of understanding.
“So, you’re a lost civilian who wandered here,” she said, clearly not doubting the story.
“Still, you give me a peculiar feeling… I may need to conduct an inspection. Please don’t worry—it won’t harm you.”
Despite Janine’s calm demeanor, Lolth tensed. Her disguise might be perfect, but she doubted it could hold under the scrutiny of this “inspection.”
Her magic was ready to activate at a moment’s notice.
Then it came—the gentle touch of Holy Light.
Unlike priests, Paladins could channel the power of their faith in unique ways.
For most demons, this power would trigger immediate agony—nausea, dizziness, even searing pain.
But Lolth felt nothing of the sort.
If anything, it was pleasant. Like a warm glow enveloping her soul.
This was a stark contrast to when she first encountered Holy Light. Back then, even the faintest thread of it had made her ill.
But now, after prolonged exposure and adaptation, it felt almost soothing.
In fact, Lolth’s lack of succubus-specific abilities gave her a peculiar edge. The purification power of Holy Light targeted chaotic and negative magic, not a person’s race.
It even appeared that Lolth shared an affinity for the Holy Light itself—a trait that baffled Janine.
“Huh?”
Janine’s surprise was evident. Her inspection, designed to unmask a soul steeped in evil, revealed something completely unexpected.
The girl’s soul was unremarkably human.
What’s more, she resonated with the Holy Light. While Lolth lacked any extraordinary abilities, her potential for growth was unmistakable.
This girl, Janine realized, could become a priestess or even a Paladin of incredible renown.
Perhaps she was from a humble, remote background, which had denied her the chance to explore such paths.
But now…
“I seem to have stumbled upon a genius,” Janine thought, her gaze softening.
Looking at Lolth with a kind smile, she asked,
“Little sister Kululu, do you desire to learn extraordinary powers?”
