Chapter 129: The Genius Magical Girl
While Lolth happily fished outside, Kanor sat alone in the classroom, staring intently at the blackboard.
The spells written there seemed to almost pulse with life:
Little Fireball, Ice Binding, Water Jet, Multiple Wind Blades, Earth Barrier
Beginner Astral Plane Perception, Mental Amplification, Spirit Eye, Star Shield, Falling Star Technique
Life Revival, Vitality Enhancement, Taming Technique, Life Force Perception, Strength Amplification
Fifteen spells, divided into three main categories, were meticulously explained. Each spell, a Level One incantation, was something an apprentice mage could master with diligence.
Lolth had deconstructed their operating principles with such clarity that, after a single read-through, Kanor understood them all.
But now came the real challenge.
Kanor had to create three brand-new spells—one for each category: Elemental, Star Spirit, and Nature magic.
Even for a prodigy like Kanor, this task was daunting.
Her recent magical training had focused on the fundamentals: meditation to increase her magical reserves and studying basic concepts.
To her, this felt like being asked to write the source code for Minesweeper, Spider Solitaire, and FreeCell after only skimming through a beginner’s guide to programming.
Normally, a novice would start with something simple—like a “Hello World” spell.
But Kanor wasn’t deterred.
After taking a moment to calm her thoughts, she began to delve deeper into the essence of magic.
“Why did Master Lolth list five spells for each type when there are only four elements?”
Kanor muttered as she studied the board, her mind racing.
She began to analyze the shared features of each group:
Flames flickered at her fingertips.
Water droplets formed and hardened into ice.
A faint resonance stirred as she connected with the Astral Plane.
Her thoughts sharpened as patterns emerged.
“The core of elemental magic lies in its attributes,” she realized.
Magic of the same attribute harmonized effortlessly, while opposing attributes triggered powerful reactions. Kanor experimented, creating tiny bursts of mist by combining fire and water magic.
Next, her attention turned to Star Spirit magic.
“Magic connecting the Astral Plane and the spiritual world…”
Kanor recalled a theory Lolth had mentioned: the Astral Plane was a projection of collective consciousness, while the spiritual world reflected the self.
Summoning the power of the Star Spirit, she felt a faint ripple within her soul—a delicate wave, almost imperceptible.
“This is why mental spells belong to this category. They directly affect the mind and spirit, making them profoundly versatile.”
Finally, Kanor studied Nature magic, also known as life magic.
Unlike arcane spells, which were purely theoretical, Nature magic influenced life force itself.
Kanor grappled with its complexity.
“Life force is a form of magic… and yet it feels so mysterious.”
She thought of its applications in martial arts and healing—its versatility only increased its enigma.
Excitement bubbled within her as her understanding deepened.
She grabbed the scroll paper and feather pen Lolth had left behind and began sketching spell formulas.
The process was arduous:
Design the magical structure.
Test it.
Refine it.
Discard flawed concepts and start anew.
By the time Kanor finally set down her pen, three intricate spell designs adorned the scroll.
She glanced at the window.
The sun had reached its zenith—it was already noon!
As Kanor stood, stretching her sore muscles, the classroom door creaked open.
Lolth entered, wearing a fisherman’s hat and carrying a bucket brimming with fish. A stalk of reeds dangled lazily from her lips.
“Didn’t manage to figure it out, huh?” Lolth said with a teasing smile. “Well, let’s eat first. You can always try again later—”
Her voice trailed off as her eyes fell on the scroll.
The detailed runes, diagrams, and spell structures caught her attention immediately.
“You… really did it,” she said, astonished.
Kanor beamed with pride.
“Thanks to your guidance, Master Lolth, I had a major breakthrough!”
Lolth scrutinized the three spell designs, testing their feasibility.
The elemental spell blended wind and fire, creating a small flamethrower-like effect.
The Star Spirit spell used ethereal energy to briefly bind an enemy’s limbs.
The Nature spell was the most innovative: it drew life force from plants, a concept that would likely earn Kanor the label of “forbidden witch” in many parts of the continent.
Though impressed, Lolth quickly noticed areas for improvement.
“Not bad,” she remarked, casually tweaking the formulas.
Kanor watched in awe as Lolth optimized the spell structures with a few deft adjustments.
“Master Lolth, that’s incredible!” Kanor exclaimed. “You thought of these changes on the spot?”
Lolth shook her head, a faint smile playing on her lips.
“No need to overpraise me,” she said calmly. “These three spells already exist on the continent. They’re known as Flame Wind, Starlight Beam, and Withering Spell. I simply adjusted your designs to align with the mature versions.”
Kanor’s eyes widened in surprise.
She had unknowingly recreated spells that generations of wizards had perfected—proof of her innate talent.
Lolth placed a hand on her student’s shoulder, pride evident in her gaze.
“Even so,” she said, “what you’ve accomplished today is no small feat.”
Kanor nodded, determination flaring in her heart.
This was only the beginning.
