Chapter 106: Wow, There Really Is a Secret Room!
After finding nothing on the first two floors, Lolth and her group felt somewhat disappointed.
Chyzh Winchester had not only tidied up the furniture but also cleared away everything that needed to be removed.
Moreover, since she had a “connection” with The Final Church, the source was merely a cry heard by a demon dragon from a commoner.
That demon dragon could have misheard, and the commoner could have mistaken The Final Church for something else entirely.
Even if she had dealt with The Final Church years ago, it’s possible she didn’t truly understand these cultists, but had just happened to deal with them by chance.
Furthermore, even if Chyzh Winchester was an expert on handling The Final Church, whether she left behind any information about the church or took it with her when she left remained uncertain!
Lolth didn’t have high hopes for this journey to begin with and had just come to take a look.
Upon reaching the third floor, the decoration on this level finally became somewhat less austere.
There was a bedroom with a huge soft bed, a study surrounded by multiple bookshelves, and a music room with a Seychelles harp and other traditional Seychelles instruments adorning the wall.
This was presumably where Countess Chyzh had lived her daily life.
The bedroom was searched through briefly, but nothing was discovered.
However, in the study, as Lolth and Isabella looked through books mainly about music theory, archery skills, Seychelles, and the general history of the mainland, trying to find any connection to “The Final Church,” Ann suddenly exclaimed softly.
“Ah—”
“What’s wrong, Ann? Did you find something?”
Lolth and Isabella both turned to look at Ann, noting she was holding a picture book.
The cover depicted two women with bare shoulders, their clothes half removed, embracing each other.
One person was dressed very elaborately like a noble, while the other person was dressed like a mercenary.
The cover also bore a title in a common language:
The Duke and the Lady’s Guide to Capturing Hearts!
Ann noticed the two people’s gazes and hurriedly returned the picture book to the bookshelf.
“There’s nothing here, I must have been mistaken,” Ann said, somewhat embarrassed.
But Lolth and Isabella were not blind; on the contrary, both possessed very sharp eyesight.
Isabella thought for a moment and said, “Actually, having your own interests and hobbies…”
“Let’s go check the next room, it doesn’t look like there are any clues here!”
Before Isabella could finish her socially awkward remark that seemed to ease the tension but actually made things more uncomfortable, Lolth interrupted her.
Shortly after, she quickly led the two people to the adjacent music room.
It was a well-lit room facing the sun, and as dusk approached, the sunlight filtered through the windows, illuminating the classical musical instruments.
At first glance, there didn’t seem to be anything particularly noteworthy about this room.
However, since they were there, Lolth decided to casually look around.
“These musical instruments are quite nice… Hmm, look at this flute, it has holes! Look at this drum, it’s round! And this black pipe, it can make a sound! Also, check out this harp, it’s enchanted!”
While speaking, Lolth picked up the Seychelles harp hanging on the wall and plucked its strings.
A melodious sound filled the room, accompanied by faint magical ripples, making Lolth somewhat suspicious.
“Why would the countess enchant a harp? Is she bored? Or is she just too wealthy to know what to do with her money?”
If she were a charming magician musician, it would be understandable, but as a human ranger, what purpose could she have for an enchanted harp?
Were they planning to turn the harp strings into tough and sharp weapons for assassinations?
Before Lolth could analyze the enchantments on the harp, its true purpose was revealed differently.
In the neighboring room, a faint magical disturbance could also be detected.
Shortly after, Lolth and her companions heard a quiet creaking sound.
Returning to the study, the tightly pressed bookshelf split apart in the middle, revealing a spiral staircase leading downwards, dark and foreboding.
Faced with the sudden appearance of the hidden chamber, the trio displayed varying degrees of surprise.
However, Lolth and the others were surprised in completely different ways.
Isabella and Ann’s reactions clearly showed astonishment at the discovery of a hidden chamber.
Lolth’s reaction was clearly more like, “What, there’s actually a secret room?”
She hadn’t even checked if there were magical fluctuations behind the bookshelf, because she had always felt it was too “typical.”
However, the fact proved that there is a reason why something “typical” becomes classic.
“Well, this works too…”
Not only did the hidden passage behind the bookshelf need to be opened by playing the instruments hanging on the wall, it was somewhat too “typical.” She had casually played with it and it had actually opened…
Of course, when Lolth discovered the magical fluctuations on the harp, she would eventually have found the secret passage and decoded it successfully by following the clues.
But setting the decoding sequence to be opened simply by playing in order was no different from setting a wireless network password as one to eight or eight eights!
Try it once out of curiosity and it would open!
Even if there was magical warding outside the wall, since it was made into a secret room, the final encryption step should have been more serious.
Lolth couldn’t help but comment about how Lady Chyzh Winchester seemed to have a generous heart, whether intentionally or through caution. Her countess’s heart was indeed magnanimous.
But anyway, finding a secret passage was fortuitous.
Even if it had nothing to do with “The Final Church,” the fact that items belonging to a noble from the Republic of Seychelles and a former security officer from Palgauro City needed to be stored in a secret room would make her trip worthwhile.
Furthermore, Lolth had a feeling that the place this secret passage led to must have strong connections to The Final Church.
She was confident that she could find the clues left by Lady Chyzh Winchester about The Final Church.
“Let’s go and explore down there.”
To Isabella and Ann, Lolth waved and then decisively stepped onto the winding staircase leading down the secret passage.
Dark, damp, and with a hint of decay in the air, like all secret passageways hiding mysteries and conspiracies, it led toward evil and cruelty.
Moreover, the staircase was much longer than expected; the number of steps she had taken exceeded the height of a three-story building by far.
This meant that this staircase eventually led to the depths underground.
Finally, at a depth about as high as a three-story building underground, the staircase reached its end and final point.
