Chapter 105: Infiltrating Countess’s Mansion
Lolth found the lock’s appearance somewhat strange.
After all, logically speaking, Countess Chyzh Winchester should have hurriedly fled after the demon race broke through the Western Front. Why would she deliberately lock a door?
What purpose did casually locking a door like this serve?
Who would lock their own door when escaping?
Had Chyzh Countess left in such haste that she couldn’t pack everything?
Was she truly expecting this magically locked door to protect her belongings from the demon race until the alliance retook Palgauro City?
While Ann and Isabella hadn’t noticed this detail, Lolth remained puzzled.
Such magical locks weren’t uncommon among wealthy nobles.
In a world with extraordinary powers, even thieves possessed unusual skills like lockpicking.
Thus, locks could be upgraded accordingly.
However…
Usually, such locks were found on safes made of anti-magic materials or on secure vaults with thick, unbreakable stone walls and doors.
The floors and walls of this three-story building appeared to be ordinary wood. If someone was determined to enter, they could simply break through the walls and door!
In fact, Ann and Isabella had considered the same approach.
Both were extraordinary warriors from different backgrounds, one a knight and the other a swordswoman. Even though they couldn’t utilize their full strength at the moment, they could easily break down a wooden door with a single kick.
What primarily restrained them was their conscience.
After all, Chyzh Winchester was still a respectable noblewoman. Both Ann and Isabella felt a certain regard for her.
Moreover, these two individuals had received proper education, so they hesitated to damage someone else’s property.
However, after consideration, Lolth interrupted their deliberation.
“There’s something peculiar about this small building.”
Lolth placed her hand on the seemingly thin wooden door and detected the presence of magic essence and dormant magic.
A well-concealed magic circle was engraved on the door, and furthermore…
The arrangement technique of this magic circle was the type that Lolth knew best.
At the edge of the magic circle, the magic flow didn’t form a closed loop but extended outward, apparently connecting to something else.
Upon further investigation, she discovered that the walls of this small building also had magic circle patterns engraved within their layers!
Although Lolth hadn’t encountered these patterns before, she could roughly determine their functions.
Each was an advanced magic circle with integrated functions of defense, detection, counterattack, and concealment.
“Indeed, this is my preferred interlocking magic circle. It appears to be just an ordinary small building, but judging by the outer walls alone, it rivals a Mage Tower,” Lolth observed, “It seems this Chyzh Winchester is a formidable mage…”
Filling her residence with magic circles was also Lolth’s preferred practice.
Therefore, seeing Chyzh Winchester’s residence gave her a sense of encountering a kindred spirit.
No wonder they had secured this place—this three-story building might prove challenging even for an average deep lord to breach!
Simultaneously, Lolth felt somewhat regretful.
It appeared that Countess Chyzh Winchester hadn’t realized that the escape magic circle was the most crucial element… Otherwise, the entire building could have been relocated.
Upon hearing Lolth’s admiration, Isabella’s expression grew slightly strange.
“No, Lord Lolth, according to my father… she is likely a Superlative Level ranger.”
Among the combat professions of the Superlative Class, there were roughly six types.
Knights, warriors, and rangers fell into the combat category, while mages, warlocks, and priests belonged to the spellcasting category.
Although all six professions utilized magic as their source of superhuman power, their skill systems, combat styles, and training techniques differed completely.
For a mage to dabble in warlock abilities or a knight to become a warrior with dual training, one typically needed exceptional talent and fortunate circumstances to succeed in both.
The combination of magic and martial arts, which belonged to different categories, appeared only in tales about Minstrels.
Although Rangers had various branches like traditional Rangers, archers, scouts, and Sneakers…
None of those branches could establish a magic array!
That was exclusively a mage’s specialty!
Not even warlocks or priests could accomplish it.
To transform an ordinary small building into something comparable to a Mage Tower, even for a superlative level mage…
It would be remarkably challenging to achieve.
“Perhaps this noble lady employed mages to establish the magic array through her connections?”
Lolth felt somewhat suspicious.
This could explain why a powerful countess from a noble family lived so modestly in Palgauro City.
She might have invested all her resources in magical array decorations.
Considering that this small building might represent half of a kind countess’s inheritance, Lolth grew even more cautious.
“We shouldn’t resort to force to enter…”
Muttering to herself, she began analyzing the weaknesses of each interconnected magic array with her magic power.
While these magic arrays were already intricate, Lolth still identified many flaws in them.
“The connections between them are too weak, and they failed to account for magic flow interruption…”
By temporarily blocking the links between the magic arrays, all would become isolated and ineffective.
Lolth spent just over ten minutes temporarily disabling all the magic arrays, less time than she’d needed to develop new spells for those demon dragons earlier.
However, she didn’t completely destroy them—after about an hour, these magic circles would become effective again.
Lolth felt she was essentially seeking assistance from “Chyzh Winchester,” hoping to find any records or experiences about “The Final Church” to determine their hideout.
Thus, helping preserve everything here intact could be considered courteous.
Removing the deactivated lock, she pushed open the plain, uncarved door, revealing a minimalist interior matching the external style.
The wooden-floored hallway, standing candlesticks for illumination, door frames, and stairs all featured minimal decoration. The first floor contained a spacious, bright living room, with a red brick fireplace and sturdy wooden chairs that almost made Lolth suspect it was a Blacksmith’s Shop.
The second floor comprised three bedrooms and a utility room for storage. Since all bedrooms had similar furnishings, Lolth couldn’t determine which belonged to whom—perhaps they were guest rooms or servants’ quarters.
The utility room contained nothing of value.
And the reason for ruling these out as Chyzh Winchester’s bedroom was simple…
The countess’s bedroom was located on the third floor.
