Chapter 101: Is This Succubus Truly a Legend?
Peace Alley and Honesty Street lie near the bustling heart of Palgauro City, surrounded by a vibrant mix of merchants’ shops, noble estates, and lively establishments. The area features an array of taverns, restaurants, clubs, and other entertainment venues, making it a hub of both commerce and social activity.
When Lolth and the two others arrived, several half-dragon soldiers still sealed off the attacked intersection. The four directions of the intersection were blocked by caution lines made of magical materials.
Within the caution lines, most of the road and buildings bore a dark, foreboding appearance, their surfaces shrouded in an unsettling gloom. However, the irregularity of the “border” hinted that this “corruption” was not permanent, as parts of it had already begun to fade and dissipate.
Crossing the caution lines, the half-dragon soldiers seemingly received instructions from Shelldor, as they not only did not stop Lolth and her companions but also had a tall individual who appeared to be their leader give a brief introduction to Lolth.
“Lord Lolth, the attack here occurred four days ago in the evening. A gray-cloaked figure suddenly appeared and used a magical scroll to initiate the assault. Fortunately, a patrol team was passing by at the time and managed to evacuate the crowd swiftly, preventing any casualties. The magical attack lasted approximately half an hour, with the first five minutes causing a rapid expansion that covered about 80% of the total area of the intersection. The subsequent growth of the affected area slowed considerably until it ceased expanding after half an hour and began to recede gradually.”
Lolth nodded at the description and proceeded directly toward the still-darkened area.
“Lord Lolth, be careful if you touch it now…”
Before the half-dragon soldier could finish the warning, Lolth had already knelt down and touched the darkened part of the ground with her fingers.
The touch was still very hard, but as soon as she touched it, the “magic” hidden in those dark components surged into her fingers!
Like a hyena or shark drawn to the scent of blood, the blackness immediately coiled around her fingertips, slithering swiftly up her forearm.
A rather strange magical energy burst from Lolth’s fingertips, not strong but very unique, unlike any known spells or skills on the continent.
This action startled Ann and Isabella. (Translator: Although it might spoil your reading experience, I have to explain here that Lolth thought that Ann was a man but she is a girl, so this is not a grammatical error when we call her “him” or call him “her”)
“My Lord, please…”
Just as Ann reached out to her own box, Lolth flicked her hand and the black part disappeared.
Ann and Isabella, who were already prepared for a response, were stunned once again.
“What just happened?”
The two of them only saw Lolth flick her hand and the magical energy vanished instantly.
It felt as easy as flicking off a little bug.
And the soldiers looking on, who were half-dragon people, were even more shocked.
They knew well the terrifying power of this magic!
“What are you all looking at?” Lolth asked in confusion, pulling out the wrinkled ball Shellodr had thrown her, “Isn’t there a precedent for it being safe to touch?”
“But Master Lolth, that was after it had completely ‘stabilized’…” the half-dragon soldier said.
“Yes, but why are some places stable while others are not?” Lolth shrugged, saying, “The streets fade away, but the scrolls and the half-dragon people and demon dragons don’t, have you ever thought about why?”
Isabella and Ann looked at each other, while the half-dragon soldiers shook their heads.
Lolth looked at Isabella and Ann with disappointment, sighing.
“These creatures from the depths are a mystery, do you both fail to understand such a simple truth… it’s magic.”
“These things, rather than being a continuous spell of magic, seem more like a unique power… yes, although it’s my first time seeing them, their nature is very straightforward.”
“Firstly, upon being ‘released,’ it forms a peculiar substance, like the black, hardened material you see here,” Lolth explained, gesturing to the object on the ground. “Secondly, this pure magical substance possesses the ability to combine and react with other magical substances, solidifying its state and altering the properties of the combined material. Otherwise, when its original magic is depleted and it hasn’t merged with new magic to stabilize, it will completely dissipate.”
Lolth said calmly.
Among the few present, though there was a legend and a former epic hero, none were practitioners of magic.
So, although they listened with confusion, they only grasped the general idea.
“So, these things rely on other magic in order to work permanently?”
After some thought, Ann said.
“That’s my guess,” Lolth shrugged, “and if the guess is right, the solution is simple… just hasten the consumption of the magic contained inside.”
As Lolth spoke, she snapped her fingers toward the dark area. Strange magical fluctuations stirred before her, and the once silent “blackness” came alive once more, pulsating with renewed energy.
Like water boiling in a pot, the black substance rolled and surged, constantly rising, as if chasing something in the air.
Lolth even felt like she was feeding fish in a pond at the park.
Like when you sprinkle a whole bag of fish food, and the fish swarm and crowd the pond.
As the black mysterious substance continued to rise, Ann and Isabella began to understand how Lolth was doing it.
The succubus released a surge of pure magic, drawing the nearby black substances within sensing range, causing them to “chase” after the magic instinctively.
“Lord’s eyesight is truly terrifying…”
Though Lolth’s words were casual, Ann understood clearly – to be able to infer the nature of an unknown “magic” just by a glance, a poke, and a few vague descriptions… It’s a kind of judgment that probably not many of the ordinary Sages in Cloud City possess!
Isabella, though not overflowing with praise and amazement, still felt impressed.
She is one level higher than Ann, and although her magic is sealed, her legendary powers still exist.
As a true legendary Grand Knight, she could naturally feel the immense magical power released by Lolth at that moment.
That is… enough to support the magic of an eighth-level spell.
Released out of thin air, without any spells or incantations, while delicately controlling each strand of magic so as not to be overtaken by the unknown black substance below.
This succubus… she once thought the other party was an Abyssal Sovereign at the legend level.
But now it seems…
Is she really only at the legend level?
