Chapter 578
by post_apiChapter 578: Halforcen
"At least in the dwarves’ eyes, this is not considered a proper diplomatic situation…" Greed muttered.
Vereesa looked at him without saying anything and continued walking.
The sentry captain and two guards were riding on several large saber cats at the front. One of the saber cats was carrying their luggage. The sentries were escorting a few bound prisoners, forming a long line behind them.
Jesse noticed that their belongings were all intact and had not been searched. Saenor was nowhere to be found. Jesse couldn’t detect the demon at all, probably escaped with Molofeel.
If these two are caught by the elves, they definitely won’t be treated kindly.
His magic wand and Azuresong Mageblade were hanging nearby. The sentry captain occasionally glanced at the sword, seeming quite interested, but he didn’t make a move to pull it out and examine it.
Rexxar remained silent, walking silently beside Jesse. With every step he took, Jesse could feel a slight vibration on the ground. From his appearance, it seemed like it wasn’t the first time he had been captured by Night Elves.
A mother bear had its head covered and was being surrounded by several sentries at the back. Surprisingly, it showed no signs of resistance.
"You don’t have any intention of killing me," Jesse said in Orcish.
"Neither do you," Rexxar replied. "You’re different from the other warlocks I’ve dealt with. I realized that a long time ago."
"Very early?" Jesse asked, "How early?"
Rexxar didn’t answer, then quietly asked after a moment, "How do you know my name?"
"There’s a story in your tribe about a half-breed." Jesse replied, "I feel you fit that description well, whether it’s your size, appearance, or your friendship with beasts."
Rexxar didn’t say anything, walked forward in silence for a while, then said, "Tell me your story, why are you here?"
Jesse said, "I came here to find a warlock, so I said we don’t have to fight. In a way, we are colleagues, but you didn’t listen to me."
"There are many warlocks here." Rexxar said, "Ogres, Orcs, demons. Who are you looking for?"
"Have you heard of Dethmoora Darkeye?" Jesse asked.
"No," Halforcen shook his head.
Jesse wasn’t surprised at all, Orcs haven’t had much interaction with the races in the alliance, let alone someone like Rexxar who has been wandering outside for many years. It was normal for him not to have heard the legendary stories circulating within the alliance.
"That’s an Elf Warlock," Jesse said. "It must have something to do with Eldre’Thalas. Do you know Eldre’Thalas?"
"Ancient elves?" Rexxar asked, looking over.
"You know that place," Jesse said. "Have you been inside?"
"It’s occupied by the Gordunni clan, they don’t welcome me. Even though I look like one, I’m not an Ogre," Rexxar said.
"I’m surprised you’re actually looking for someone," he continued. "I thought you were a group of gladiators coming from afar."
"What?" Jesse asked.
"Gladiators, haven’t you heard of them? Warriors who fight others for money," Rexxar said. "The Gordunni clan has been hosting arenas for a long time, on Draenor, and here, they are up to the same thing. These fools, quite amusing."
"Have you ever participated in the arena?" Jesse asked.
"I might have been interested if it was ten years ago," Rexxar said. "But now, I’m tired of those meaningless fights."
"Why are you here looking for warlocks and demons to hunt?" Jesse asked.
Rexxar still didn’t answer, he just kept walking silently.
After a while, he said, "You tell me first, why are you looking for that warlock?"
"It’s for money," Jesse said.
"That simple?" Rexxar couldn’t help but chuckle.
"Not simple at all," Jesse said, "I need money for food and drinks, I need money to find a suitable home for my family."
Rexxar nodded and said, "I also do it for my family."
"Your family?" Jesse asked.
Halforcen glanced back at the giant bear, who let out a few grunts in response.
"I don’t want them to get hurt by more dark things." He continued, "But it’s clear that my power alone is not enough, so I can only do my best."
"I feel my connection to my homeland getting weaker and weaker, almost completely gone, so I can’t lose this place anymore. I don’t think you can understand this feeling, human."
"Quiet," the sentry next to him reminded in a common language.
Rexxar glanced at her, but remained silent.
Even though he didn’t say it out loud, Jesse felt he might understand this feeling better than Rexxar.
He looked at Greed and Vereesa walking side by side in front of him, then gazed at the narrow path leading deeper into the jungle. This was all he had now, this world.
Rexxar couldn’t lose Azeroth again, just like him.
In the evening, the sentry group rested at a turn in the road. Several bound people were arranged to sit under a tree, and the giant bear Misha nestled beside them and fell asleep, seemingly not caring about the sentries. Rexxar leaned against her, picking up rocks from the ground to pass the time.
After watching Rexxar’s actions for a while, Greed moved closer to Jesse and Vereesa, whispering, "That guy… is it…?"
"Yes," said Jesse.
"Why isn’t he afraid of these elves?" asked the dwarf curiously.
"As far as I know, the Kaldorei here only drive away outsiders who are not allowed into their patrol area, they won’t hurt them," Vereesa said. "Of course, except demons. From their conversations, it can be heard that they have sensed the presence of demons, just not sure if it’s because of you, what we brought with us, or if there really are demons nearby."
She gave Jesse a meaningful look, and Jesse whispered, "I’m sure there are no demons nearby."
"That’s good," Vereesa nodded.
"You said you wouldn’t be caught by them, Vereesa," Greed asked with a smile.
Vereesa looked at Greed coldly and said, "It’s my own fault, I have nothing to say."
"It’s not your fault, who knew we were followed by such a guy," Greed comforted her. "It messed up all your plans."
"I’m not making excuses, but I actually noticed something was wrong a while ago," Vereesa said. "A few days after we entered Feralas, I felt like some birds in the forest were strange. It was only when I really confronted him that I realized that guy could control animals to help him. So maybe many birds are his informants. He doesn’t even need to follow us all the time, animals keep informing him."
"Unstoppable." Greed muttered, "There are too many strange characters here."
"That Halforcen mentioned Eldre’Thalas being invaded by Ogres," Jesse whispered, "maybe sneaking in will be easier than we think."
"Ogres?!" Greed exclaimed, surprised along with Vereesa.
"Now I just hope their general recognizes Celebras’ horn, and lets us go," the ranger sighed, "what a mess."
Jesse wasn’t very worried about the outcome because the general was Shandris Feathermoon, who had followed the current Night Elf leader, the High Priestess Tyrande Whisperwind, since ten thousand years ago. She couldn’t miss recognizing the Woodland Protector’s token.
