Chapter 099: Andromath’s Office
The spell of Arcane Intellect is not difficult, with Jesse’s sensitivity to spells, he remembered it after hearing it once.
After Malin finished chanting, "Miss Tyst, Yoply, Sinning," Jesse could even hear the connection between this spell and the modern common language. This sentence probably means to let Arcane bestow eyes that can see deeper things.
But the real difficulty of this spell lies in casting it on oneself.
This was Jesse’s first time learning a magic spell that he would release on himself. His previous magic was either directly aimed at people to release a burst of Shadow Power to intimidate them, or forming a tiny energy ball between his fingers. Self-casting was a new attempt for him.
During this process, he understood Malin’s intention. It is safer and easier to first learn a simple spell for self-casting, then summon more complex Arcane enchantments onto oneself.
After Malin demonstrated once, Jesse began to try imitating his gestures for self-casting.
As expected, he encountered a painful failure the first time. He gathered a mass of indescribable Arcane energy in the air, forming some disordered symbols which then dissipated, almost burning his hair.
"Connect the Ley Line to yourself, infuse the arcane energy from your bloodline into yourself, and shape those Arcane energies according to the spell. This is much more delicate than letting it cause destruction," Malin said. "So, this is a different experience from simply conjuring Arcane light Mr. Seso. Don’t rush, you can practice this at home. I need to visit the university library in a while, now I need to eat, haven’t even taken a bite of the bread I bought."
Although he agreed verbally, Jesse was still feeling a bit discouraged.
Clearly, mastering the Light Spell didn’t mean he had any talent in other arcane magic. It was evident from Malin’s expression that he wasn’t performing better than Malin’s other students.
After bidding farewell to Malin, Jesse climbed to the top of the Wizard’s Sanctum to find Master Andromath for course selection, as Malin had advised.
Despite hearing many talk about the leader of Wizard’s Sanctum, the senior mage Andromath, Jesse had never seen him in person before.
Walking to the very top of Wizard’s Sanctum, turning left from the route to the library, passing through the bustling office area, and then through a circular, ascending corridor adorned with red carpets displaying the great archmages of Wizard’s Sanctum from generations past.
Here, Jesse saw a picture of Nielas Aran, who was the poor father mentioned by Malin just now, who was mistakenly killed by Medivh while in a coma.
He was a very handsome man, with a scholar-style mustache on his mouth, long hair tied in several braids hanging on his chest, his determined and lean face looking straight ahead, not resembling a stubborn and conservative mage, more like a prince of some country.
In the portrait, he was probably less than forty years old, if he were younger, he might look even more charming.
It’s no wonder that Guardian Aegwynn, who had lived for 800 years, chose this man to be her "companion" in her later years, and was willing to have offspring with him.
At the end of the corridor was a dark red door, so old that it could be almost the same age as Aegwynn.
The door was ajar, Jesse pushed it open and entered, behind it was a fairly large polygonal office, where many people were working, some were whispering about something. Above their heads, each wall had a huge window, which was the spire of the Wizard’s Sanctum.
In the game, Jesse had never been here before, so he was drawn to this new and grand hall. At that moment, a middle-aged man asked, "Do you need anything, apprentice?"
"I am Master Malin’s student, here to see Master Andromath," Jesse said.
"I am Andromath. If I’m not mistaken, you are Jesse Seso, right?"
Jesse looked at the person speaking. He was a very strong man, even though he was wearing a thick purple robe and a golden cape, you could see his sturdy body.
You could even see signs of exercise on his face, and there were clear muscles on his neck.
Despite his fighter-like physique, he had a calm and cool demeanor, his eyes looking indifferent, like an outsider observing the scene, making Jesse feel as if the words spoken earlier weren’t said by him. He was younger than Malin, but clearly held a higher status. Besides studying magic, he clearly had time to work on his physical strength, maybe that’s what the Wizard Saint always emphasized about magical talent.
Jesse wondered how many people like Andromath there were in Dalaran.
"I am indeed Jesse Seso," Jesse slightly bowed and said, "Master Malin sent me here to choose my classes."
"You came quickly," Andromath said. "But to start your classes now, you might have to wait until after The Feast of Winter Veil. Did Master Malin tell you about this?"
"Yes, he did," Jesse replied.
"Come over to my desk."
Andromath took Jesse to a corner and began searching through the desk.
Jesse looked at the books on the shelves behind him and could even feel the overflowing magical energy from them. These books were definitely related to magic, unlike the messy encyclopedias, natural history books, and novels in Malin’s study. The difference was like the library of a wizard’s sanctuary and a university library.
"Every apprentice must choose a specialization branch, a spell language, and an auxiliary course."
While Andromath spoke, he placed several books on the table and asked, "Have you ever learned about the Arcane branch of magic?"
"Yes," Jesse said. "Summoning, divination, illusions, enhancement, transmutation, shaping energy, protection, necromancy."
"It seems you have read the series of books by Master Anslreim Ruinwoviel," Andromath said. "Because of well-known reasons, necromancy is not taught in our academy, so you can only choose from the other branches."
He smiled and continued, "The textbooks of each branch at the Wizard’s Sanctum are here. Since you have made entering here your wish to the king, your understanding of the academy may be much deeper than most new apprentices, right? I don’t need to believe in recommendations. Sign your name in the roster at the end of the textbook, and you will officially become a new student of that branch."
Jesse nodded and then placed his hand on the Protection School’s textbook.
"Protection School," Andromath said. "Unfortunately, the most accomplished Protection School mages are in Lordaeron and Dalaran, but laying the foundation at the Wizard’s Sanctum is also good. Next, choose a spell language. You can choose from Elvish, Draconic, and Giant Runic. After passing the graduation exam, you can choose another one. I think for you, it will take at most a year, so don’t worry too much."
Jesse just received the booklet for language selection and saw that there was also a course in Common language.
"Common language?"
"Oh, that’s a course for people from inside and outside the alliance," Andromath said. "You might not think that some dwarves or Gnomish would want to come to the Wizard’s Sanctum to learn magic, but it does happen."
"Got it," Jesse remembered Malin saying that the Elvish language course in Stormwind was a mess, basically serving as a basic training ground for the royal diplomats.
"Dragon language, I choose dragon language."
"Your aim is advanced spellcasting?" Andromath nodded slightly in approval. "Dragon language is a very difficult language, be prepared for a tough challenge."
"Master, which protection spells are in dragon language?" Jesse asked.
After reminiscing for a moment, Andromath said, "There are many, many protection spells are very ancient and fundamental, naturally originating from the ancient dragon language. It is said that dragons created many protection spells to safeguard their precious treasures, like Frost Shield, Mage Armor Spell, Ice Armor Spell, and more."
Upon hearing about the Mage Armor Spell, Jesse was determined.
"So, next up is an extra course," Andromath said. "You can choose one from the following list."
Jesse pulled out a schedule, it had lots of different classes like culture, history, and geography, also included were inscriptions, alchemy, herbalism, which are schools mentioned in the game. Enchanting should be a type of branch under the enhancement school.
Inscriptions and alchemy are probably two important sources of income for Wizard’s Sanctum, especially inscriptions… magic scrolls, writing runes, making magical paper and ink, are all included in it.
He has already found a teacher for alchemy, Ursula Deline, though he doesn’t know her level, she sounds impressive. Maybe he should sign up for the inscription class instead. Not sure if there will be a chance to get free writing materials in the inscription course, or learn some simple magical ways to make ink, that way he can save some money.
After signing under the inscription textbooks, Andromath put them away and said, "After the Feast of Winter Veil, before January 18 next year, make sure to go to Master Malin to get your course schedule. Before that, you can do some preview courses related to the Protection School with Master Malin. He is one of our best teachers in the Protection School here, study diligently under him for two months, you might be ahead of many apprentices by then."
After organizing the textbooks, Andromath smiled while looking at Jesse’s outfit, and said, "By the way, Jesse Seso, after entering Wizard’s Sanctum, are you thinking of changing your clothes?"
"I’m used to it, Master." Jesse touched his head and awkwardly said, "Would this outfit be embarrassing for Wizard’s Sanctum?"
Andromath laughed and said, "No, after all, no one would even think you are from Wizard’s Sanctum."
Jesse nodded and asked, "If I want to get an outfit that suits a mage, where should I go?"
Andromath glanced around and said, "Go outside Wizard’s Sanctum to Larson’s Clothing Store, the Larson family has an agreement with Wizard’s Sanctum, they will tailor clothes for our mages, make sure to go there."
Jesse is a bit tight on money right now, and getting new clothes is not his top priority at the moment, considering he has a lot of other things to do.
So after leaving Wizard’s Sanctum, he hurried home to continue studying Language Orcish, and started comparing translations of Demonic universal language provided by imp, with the bilingual book Language Orcish Demonic.
With less than a month left until November 12th, he had to make the most of every moment.
