Chapter 374: No Mercy
Covered in the dirty blood of Rockjaw Troggs, Jesse, exhausted and too tired to open his eyes, stared at the dwarf in front of him. Greed stood like a marble statue, every movement accompanied by the scraping sound of stone rubbing against stone.
Greed examined his appearance, puffed out his chest, opened his stiff nostrils, tried to breathe deeply, and as his chest rose and fell, his skin gradually regained its color, and his body shrank.
"I’ve never seen a dwarf undergo such a trial to gain the power of our ancestors before," Daggett exclaimed. "It’s truly astonishing. You really looked like a true Earthen just now."
"I’m still not used to this feeling…" Greed patted his stomach and said, "I probably need more practice."
Two dwarves were discussing when Jesse curiously looked into the open door and saw a room filled with wolves, with the statues of Earthen all knocked down and rearranged.
He raised the Azuresong Mageblade and walked towards the end of the statues, where he saw a fallen stone guard.
This guard was enormous, over two meters tall, with a wide body that looked like a square block. Each stone arm was thicker than Jesse’s body, and the feet were as wide as stone thrones.
Why was this stone guard here, when they hadn’t seen it when entering the hall before?
"What is this thing…" Jesse turned to Greed.
Greed said, "When the doors closed, it was pitch black inside, couldn’t see anything. I felt the walls move, heard the mechanisms turning, then heavy footsteps."
He raised an empty bottle and said, "This Nature Protection Potion saved my life, Jesse. I didn’t forget to drink it this time. Some of these standing Earthens can cast lightning magic, and without this potion, I might have been knocked out at the start, unable to fight back."
Jesse patted Greed’s shoulder, feeling that his sturdy shoulder now felt like a rock, even though it no longer had the same grey-white appearance as before.
"Let’s leave quickly, I haven’t slept for days and don’t want to sleep here either."
"You haven’t slept at all?" Greed asked.
"I can’t sleep here," Jesse said helplessly.
They returned to the temple with many passages they had been in before. Most of the Rockjaw Troggs had escaped, and the hall was empty with no movement at all.
Jesse thought these creatures must have a way to reach deep into Uldaman, otherwise how could they have escaped so cleanly. It seemed like the entrance hadn’t been discovered by the dwarves yet. As they approached the entrance leading to the Dark Iron Dwarves’ camp in Uldaman, the three of them heard distant voices talking.
There seemed to be many Dark Iron Dwarves outside, who probably noticed the commotion inside, thinking the Rockjaw Troggs were about to launch an attack from inside.
Jesse said, "I only have one Invisibility Potion left now, so if we split it into three, it means each of us might only stay invisible for about twenty seconds, and the invisibility effect might not be as good. We need to be as fast as possible to make sure we leave before they realize."
"Fortunately, running down from here is much shorter than when we came in," Daggett said. "And we all know the way."
Greed whispered, "Then let’s hurry, I feel like those Dark Iron Dwarves are coming up."
Three people poured the potion into empty bottles, drank it one after another, and then rushed out the door when the countdown effect took place.
Jesse clearly felt like he could see things more clearly, and could also hear the sounds around him. As he passed by a figure, he clearly heard the person make a sound and look towards the side before talking to a nearby dwarf.
The sound of "Hey, hey" was constantly heard, indicating that the effects of the potion were not strong enough, causing some blurry shadows to appear.
Most of the dwarves were staring intently at the gates of Uldaman, not paying much attention to their surroundings in the dim light of the braziers. However, when the effects of the potion wore off, Jesse could see a Dark Iron Dwarf right in front of him, staring at him as he emerged from the darkness.
"What?" Just as the Dark Iron Dwarf was about to speak, Jesse quietly cast a spell of fear, cutting off the Dwarf’s words. With a wide grin, he shouted and ran towards a nearby passage, where Greed and Daggett also became visible.
"Hurry… don’t worry about them!" Jesse said.
The three of them immediately ran towards the crack in the rocks they had been at before, moved the stones, and squeezed into the crevice to rush into the dark tunnel. They climbed out of a hidden ravine using a ladder inside.
It was still dark outside, with the moonlight illuminating the barren land. A wave of exhaustion swept over Jesse, making it hard for him to keep his eyes open.
But it was still very dangerous at that moment. The dwarves inside could discover the passage at any time. This time, they did not bury anything when they left like they did last time.
They took a detour to the northeast for about an hour. After the last attack by the earth element, they never dared to rest in the middle of the rocky pile again. In the end, they found a shady spot under a cliff to rest for a while.
Daggett sat on one side, while Greed and Jesse sat on the other.
Greed glanced at Jesse, who knew that he wouldn’t be able to sleep unless that rock was taken care of.
Especially with that rock nearby, he always had a feeling that if he fell asleep and woke up, he wouldn’t be himself anymore.
Jesse looked at Daggett and said, "I still want to see that rock, Daggett."
"Haven’t you already seen it?" Daggett said. "I understand how you feel, but I don’t really want it to show up again now. I finally got it in my hands and just want to take it safely back to Thelsamar, back to Kharanos…"
"We’ve come out this way in such a sorry state, what if it falls off halfway?" Jesse asked.
Daggett hesitated, reached into his pocket, Jesse moved quickly, stepped forward, grabbed his arm. Daggett was startled at first, then realized what was happening, he tried to grab and scratch Jesse like crazy, but Jesse managed to hold him down by twisting his two arms.
"Bandit! Robber! I shouldn’t have trusted mercenaries like you. You pretend to be as innocent as lambs, but your hearts are darker than Blackrock Mountain. You thieves, I curse you!"
Even though Daggett cursed and struggled, Jesse was incredibly strong. Even after several days without sleep, Daggett, who was not a professional fighter, couldn’t match Jesse’s strength.
Greed reacted quickly and took the stone out of Daggett’s pocket while the two were struggling.
"What is this strange smell? Daggett, aren’t you going to confess?"
"Smash her!" Jesse shouted. "The more broken, the better!"
"Smash?" Greed asked, puzzled. "Just like that?"
Jesse said, "Wait… maybe we will all be affected later. Greed, this is a contaminated object!"
"So, will you compensate her?"
"Yes, I will."
"Okay." Greed nodded, threw the stone on the ground nearby. Daggett yelled, "Are you crazy! What did she do to deserve this destruction?"
Greed didn’t listen and directly smashed the hammer down. Unexpectedly, the black stone cracked the hard ground with one hit.
He checked his hammer, made sure it was fine, and said to Jesse, "This thing is pretty strong."
The Salron Dark Iron, formed from the blood of ancient gods, was used by many powers to make weapons and armor. It was a very hard material.
Jesse said, "The harder, the better, Greed. Try again, this thing will definitely break!"
"No!" Daggett shouted, reaching out his hand, and Jesse pulled him aside.
Greed placed the stone on another slab. Jesse watched as his body gradually expanded in a flash of light, turning gray, as if some kind of rapid spreading of whitening, eventually transforming every inch of skin and even turning his hair gray.
"Try this one, little thing."
Greed’s voice sounded like grinding rocks, as he raised the hammer in his hand, releasing a fierce flash of lightning, roaring loudly and smashing down on the stone. A dull thunder shattered the stone slab, as electricity spread out from the ground enlightening the darkness around. Jesse blinked, while the struggling Daggett was coughing violently.
After the lightning passed, Greed leaned in, and the stone had turned into black fragments and powder, dispersing in the wind. The shadowy power seemed to have been forcefully destroyed by his lightning, leaving no trace behind.
At that moment, Jesse felt like a heavy burden was suddenly lifted from his mind, and the night in front of him seemed to become quiet.
Held by him, Daggett also went limp, shaking his head and mumbling, "I don’t know why you are doing this…"
"It’s all over, Daggett," Greed approached and said, "You should come to your senses."
Daggett looked up at the gray-white dwarf who was almost six feet tall, his eyes filled with indescribable pain and fear. Jesse placed him on the ground, and he just curled up slowly, trembling non-stop.
