Chapter 095: Deathweed
"It’s normal not to know, even a regular pharmacist may not recognize the value of this," Ursula explained, "Just by the name, you should know how dangerous Deathweed is. Don’t touch it with your hands, let me get it out for you."
Ursula searched for the right tool in the box and said, "Deathweed… It might be highly sought after by some forces in Stormwind, but my advice is, don’t get involved with them. Don’t let them think you can help them find Deathweed. Otherwise, you’ll have a lot more trouble operating in Stormwind. Jesse, you’re one of us now, don’t take on another burden."
"Dealing with organizations like ours is not easy for SI:7 people, as they distrust magic and lack the necessary expertise. But for rogues, assassins, killers… anyway, let’s burn these herbs."
Holding a long pair of tongs, she grabbed the edge of the torn bag and looked at Jesse, saying, "This isn’t your own bag, is it?"
"It belongs to the Gnolls," Jesse said, "That’s the problem, Miss Ursula Deline."
Ursula asked, "You encountered the Gnolls?"
Jesse nodded and said, "I not only encountered Gnolls, but also found their Alchemy Room. In the Alchemy Room, they were conducting experiments with lots of Murloc bodies. They were using Murlocs for experiments, and I don’t think the Gnoll tribe’s ultimate goal is just to poison the Murlocs."
Ursula asked, "Are you saying that the Gnolls want to poison Sentinel Hill or Moonbrook?"
"Not sure yet," Jesse said. "Can you tell what they are planning to make with these herbs in these bags?"
Ursula flipped through the herbs with a fork, shrugged, and said, "There are many possibilities. These herbs could be used to make a very deadly potion for spellcasters but harmless to regular folk, or they could be used to create poison to pollute water sources. It seems like something is still missing here. There’s Deathweed, a lot of Deathweed, also Briarthorn, some weeds, Mageroyal… I can help you pick out the herbs related to making Mana Potions."
"Thank you," Jesse handed the bag to Ursula and said, "Should I take this bag to the Wizard’s Sanctum and have them report to the king?"
"Even if you let the king know, what can that imp do?" Ursula sighed and said, "The situation in Redridge is critical, I heard rumors that a Gnoll Warlock used dark magic to attack Stonewatch Keep. Just a few days ago, Gakin was planning to go there to see if he could find clues to new spells. In this case, the kingdom doesn’t have the resources to send more troops to Westfall to hunt down a group of Gnoll pharmacists. The troops guarding Moonbrook, Sentinel Hill, and the Westfall Garrison trade route are already sufficient."
"Do you know about the new Gnoll leader in Westbrook? It’s said that they have already taken out two mercenary squads. But apart from mercenaries, what else does the king have? I would guess he’s running out of options even to hire outsiders to solve the crisis. Now the bounty on Hogger is only thirty silver coins, and that’s after it was raised. What kind of people do you think thirty silver coins can attract?"
Jesse felt a bit intrigued upon hearing about the thirty silver coins, but thinking about Hogger’s strength that day, his excitement immediately faded.
Based on his experiences in those battles, Hogger’s sheer strength surpassed that of any ordinary Gnoll by far, even beyond that of the Elf Ranger. In terms of Greed’s sensory perception, Hogger might only be slightly weaker than the Redridge Shaman when he used wind element to boost his strength.
With Hogger’s craziness and fierceness, that Shaman wouldn’t stand much of a chance against him in a fight.
The Orc Shaman needs to constantly communicate with the elements to use such power, which is very draining. And Hogger’s energy… As the leader of a group of Gnolls who value extreme violence, his energy seems bottomless.
Even someone like him would give up the 30 silver coins because of Hogger’s power, not to mention the stronger mercenaries. The bounty does seem a bit low.
He remembered what Elyan, the king’s secretary at Stonewatch Keep, had told him about the treasury being in dire straits, not being able to spare 10 gold coins to reward the heroes there. Maybe those 30 silver coins were given reluctantly.
"Just need a bit more Silverleaf." Ursula asked, hand on her waist. "Are you planning to buy it from me, or from somewhere else?"
"I’ll buy it from you."
"4 silver per pound."
Jesse remembered the buying price outside was 2 silver 50 copper, and asked, "Taking advantage of your own people?"
Ursula smiled and said, "I guess you sold herbs to Lumere outside before, right? She charges higher prices than me."
Jesse rubbed his forehead, realizing he didn’t have much money left and buying Silverleaf would be costly.
"You help me first, use some Silverleaf, and I’ll see how much I can gather to repay you. Sound good?"
"Don’t take too long."
"Alright."
"By the way," Ursula said, "How did the task I sent you on go? Please don’t tell me you didn’t even see a Murloc, and just ran back at the sight of a Gnoll."
"Didn’t find the Murloc," Jesse took out the largest scale from the three scales he brought back, "But I found this."
"Naga scale!" Ursula squinted and asked, "This… is so beautiful."
"Found it by the seashore."
Jesse certainly wouldn’t mention that there was still a bag of this stuff at his home.
But looking at Ursula’s expression, he regretted not bringing back Naga’s head. The head looked scary at night and he felt very scared.
Ursula held up the scales and said, "These scales are excellent for enchanting frost magic. Jesse, if you make a robe with these, it will protect you better from frost and enhance your water element magic power. How many did you find?"
"There aren’t many scales to pick up," Jesse asked. "How much can we sell this one for?"
"This scale has a nice shape," Ursula said. "If you give it to me, I won’t charge you for the Silverleaf. What do you think?"
Jesse frowned and asked, "Are you tricking me?"
Ursula smiled and explained, "Even though these scales are rare, there isn’t a big market for them. Only frost magic practitioners from the Wizard’s Sanctum would need them, or they could be used to make poison. Yes, they are slightly toxic. Even if you try to sell them, you won’t get more than 10 silver coins. I need it for some experiments I am working on. If you give it to me, I’ll make 6 Mana Potions for you, I’ll cover any extra Silverleaf you need, and return any leftover materials. What do you think?"
"Okay."
"Come by tomorrow morning to pick up your potions, Jesse."
Exiting The Slaughtered Lamb, Jesse decided to visit the tailor in the Mage Quarter. He had so many scales, even though they weren’t as big or whole as the one he found. But even if he could only sell each for one silver coin, it would be worth a lot!
